"Jason, marry me!"

The door opened again. Bella Dixon walked in with a bouquet of flowers, dropped to one knee, and held out a box.

When I saw what it was, my breath hitched.

Three years ago, a fire broke out by accident while Bella was decorating my studio for the proposal.

The fire destroyed a lot of things. The wedding dress designs I'd created for her were burned to ashes, and my studio was shut down. Eventually, even blowing out birthday candles was enough to trigger my PTSD.

At my lowest point, she held me day and night, going over our wedding details again and again.

But now that the ring was finally ready, I felt something pressing down on my chest.

I was about to take the box when Jasper Wilder lifted Bella into the air, spun her around, and cheered, "Bella, you won."

A helpless yet tender smile appeared on her face, and she waited for Jasper to stop before handing him the box.

The ring fit Jasper's finger like a glove.

"Jason, this is my payment for treating you!" He raised his hand and deliberately waved it in front of me. "I just made a bet with her. I bet you had at least some self-respect and wouldn't take it.

"But Bella said you love her so much that you'd never pass up the slightest chance to marry her!"

I froze, forcing myself to look at Bella.

She didn't deny it. Instead, she just stood up and straightened Jasper's collar. "Yeah, I won. I need to satisfy your wish. Tell me. What do you want?"

Jasper held her waist tight, his eyes crinkling with a smile. "I want you to help me get the keynote speaker spot at the forum the day after tomorrow. Also, you can't change your mind and take this ring back just because he tries to convince you otherwise."

My mom, Hannah Moore, hurried to reassure him. "This ring was made for you. The fire burned Jason's ring finger. He can't wear it even if he wants to."

Bella nodded with a smile. Then she looked at me, her eyes filled with resignation. "Be good, okay? I'll take you to the mall to get a new one."

My chest tightened, and my vision briefly went black. I stared at Bella, the woman I'd carried out of the fire all those years ago.

"So you deliberately chose my birthday to… surprise me?"

Bella's voice was hoarse and tired. "Jason, it's been three years. We can't have the smell of smoke in the house or anything with an open flame. I'm human too. I need things like this to unwind and relax."

Mom rubbed her back gently, looking pained.

Jasper let out an exaggerated sigh. "Jason, after all these years in the field, I hate patients like you who fake being sick. You keep saying you're ill, but I tested you today. Someone who's really sick wouldn't have been able to hold out."

He pointed at the burn scars on my face with his ringed finger.

I instinctively covered my face, but Bella thought I was about to hurt him and immediately stepped in front of him.

"Enough! Jasper deliberately returned from overseas to treat your illness. He doesn't owe you anything."

Mom rushed over too and slapped me across the face, sending my head snapping to the side. "Apologize to him!" She gripped my injured palm hard and yanked me forward.

I lowered my head and looked at her hands.

Those were the same hands that had held mine as we crossed the road, packed my school bags, and made me my favorite meal.

When I fell sick and my dad, Liam Frost, passed away, all the guilt she’d felt toward me shifted over to the smooth-talking Jasper instead.

"Mom…" I called out to her, my voice raspy.

"Mr. Shaw, we've found Jasper."When the police called, I was filling out the paperwork to report Jasper and Bella. I handed over all the evidence against Jasper, the group chat records, and proof that Bella had visited the abandoned hospital.I didn't forgive Jasper, and I wouldn't accept Bella using illegal acts as proof of love.By the time the police rescued Jasper, he'd completely lost it. He knelt before the police and screamed when he saw the lights. The doctor said the burns on his legs were so severe that he might not be able to walk normally again. When Jasper woke up, he immediately said that Mom had done this to him."Where's my mom?""Hannah isn't your mom!""She's my godmother. Bring her here. I have something to ask her."Later, the police showed me the footage from the hospital hallway. The caregiver wheeled Mom over to Jasper.Mom was still feeling hopeful. "Jasper, don't be mad at Bella, okay? She just loves Jason a lot."Jasper lifted his head. The burns

Bella stood outside the lab with a folder in her hands. She'd been doing this for 27 days straight. For the first 20 days, Bella came to see me, but I refused to let her in. Then for the next 7 days, she came with the patent transfer documents. She hadn't fought it when Shaw Corporation acquired her company. She'd only held on to a few key technologies. Now, she was handing them over to Claire."I don't want money. I just want to stay by your side, even if it means just bringing you a glass of water."I didn't take the folder from her. "We only recruit useful talents.""I can volunteer for clinical trials.""The New Life Program is still in the observation phase.""I'm willing to sign any agreement.""Bella, drug trials are overseen by an ethics committee. They're not a place for you to atone for your sins."She faltered. "Then what can I do?""Go downstairs and sign up with the project team. They need a data entry clerk."Bella nodded. "Okay. I'll do whatever it takes for

"Jason, is it you? Jason!"I had just set down my microphone, and the audience was still applauding when Bella rushed to the stage.I'd just finished explaining the clinical focus of the New Life Program, including rebuilding after trauma and helping patients regain control of their lives.Suddenly, a chair toppled over in the last row.Bella's eyes were bloodshot, and she'd lost a lot of weight. Her hair was usually perfect, but now it was a mess. She shoved the security guard aside and walked over to me. "Jason, you're still alive. This is great. Did you know I've looked for you for the past three years…"I stood still, my fingers gripping the edge of the microphone. My expression remained calm. "Ma'am, you've mistaken me for someone else."Bella's face paled. "How can you not be him? You have his voice, his eyes, and the scar on his left hand."She reached out to touch my palm, but I took a step back.Claire walked onto the stage and stepped in front of me. "Ms. Dixon, plea

"No, I didn't! Shut up!" Bella screamed, her eyes red, then she pounced on Mom.The woman turned off the tablet."Let me introduce myself. I'm Claire Jenkin, the head of Hermon Trauma Research Center in Aether. I'm also the sponsor of the New Life Program you applied for."The fire was not an accident. By the time we received your message and arrived, all we could do was place a body at the scene. You were already unconscious, and your condition was critical. As for what happens next…"I nodded, my voice weak and hoarse. "They'll recognize the phone. The medical examiner will run a DNA test. Jasper has a year's worth of my treatment samples. If I'm right, he'll do everything he can to prove that the body is mine."Claire looked at me. "He already did. He provided the police with a DNA comparison report. The report identified the deceased as Jason Frost."I slowly balled my fist as Claire handed me a name change form."You can keep your name, or you can choose a new one."I nodd

Bella's eyes flew open in shock."The storage room caught fire, and they found an unrecognizable body at the scene." The bodyguard's voice shook, and every word hammered into Bella's heart."What?" Bella sat up straight, her face white. "What did you just say?"The bodyguard didn't dare to lift his head. "It was caused by a short circuit in the old, faulty wiring. By the time the firefighters arrived, the fire was already out of control."Bella didn't hear the rest as she rushed out of the house.Mom was talking to Jasper about the celebration banquet when she noticed a change in Bella's expression and a tremor in her voice. She asked, "Bella, what's wrong? What happened?""Something happened to Jason."Jasper and Mom exchanged a glance, then hurried after Bella.…When I opened my eyes, there was a needle in my wrist. A woman sat beside my bed, dressed in a black suit and holding a document. Her voice was cool, but not pushy at all. "The doctor said you inhaled too much smo

I had just climbed into a cab when Mom called. She yelled, "Jason, if you still think of me as your mom, then get your ass back here to sign the agreement! You ingrate, it's just a stupid pendant! Why are you so hung up over it?"I hung up.When I checked into the hotel, I found that all my cards had been frozen. I sat in the lobby and called my friends, but they either hung up without a word or didn't answer at all.One of them said helplessly, "Jason, Ms. Dixon has made it clear that we are not to help you. Just admit you were wrong to her."Jasper posted nine photos on his Instagram. They were filled with pictures of luxury goods, and the center photo showed him beaming between Bella and Mom.The caption read, "It's obvious when someone loves you. It feels so good to have people backing me up and someone to catch me when I fall."I spent the night at a 24-hour convenience store.Early the next morning, two bodyguards blocked my way when I stepped out."Mr. Frost, Ms. Dixon
