Chapter 2

Author: Clouded View
Emily had a few drinks that night, so when she stood up, she was a little unsteady on her feet.

As Julian steadied her, Francis grabbed her bag, and Henry held the door open for her.

I trailed behind, following them to the restaurant entrance. Julian looked back at me. "Get a cab yourself. Text me when you get home."

"Okay."

The three of them walked Emily to her car.

I stood by the curb alone. It took me more than 15 minutes to finally get a cab. When I got home, a message from Julian was already waiting for me on my screen.

"Emmie isn't feeling too well. I'll be back late, so go to bed first."

I stared at the message, then opened the company information Rose had sent me. This time, I wasn't going to wait around for an answer that would always put me last.

The next day, I went back to my old company to complete my resignation paperwork. When HR handed me the agreement, they looked at my face before speaking.

"Anna, are you really sure about this? The company is just restructuring. You're not being singled out."

"I know."

I flipped to the last page and signed my name.

Before leaving my desk, I packed everything from my drawers into a cardboard box, one item at a time. There was my mug, a few professional books, and the mint plant I'd kept alive for three years.

Someone from my team offered to help me carry everything, but then our manager summoned them away.

I dropped the last pen into the box, pulled out my phone, and sent a message to the group chat. "I get off at six. I've got quite a bit of stuff, so don't forget to come pick me up."

Julian replied right away, "Got it. I'll head straight over after work."

Francis said, "I'll drive and bring over a few extra boxes."

Henry chimed in too, "I'll meet you guys after work."

Upon seeing those messages, I finally felt a little reassured.

At exactly 6:00 pm, I walked out of the office building with my box in my arms. It was already getting dark, and the streetlights outside had just come on.

I stood by the steps for about ten minutes.

By 6:20 pm, Julian still hadn't shown up. Francis and Henry were nowhere to be seen either. I lowered my head and asked in the group chat, "Are you guys here yet?"

There was no response in the group chat. I waited a few more minutes before calling Julian.

The phone rang until the call disconnected automatically. Just as I was about to call again, a new post from Emily popped up in my feed.

She was standing in a spacious living room, with piles of cardboard boxes stacked behind her.

"I finally got the keys to my new place! But there's so much stuff to move. There's no way I can get it all done by myself."

In the next photo, Julian was crouched on the floor assembling a shelf. Francis was hauling a bookcase, and Henry was carrying a floor lamp.

I zoomed in on the photo, then slowly zoomed back out. So they were all at her place.

Seeing me standing there motionless with the box in my arms, the security guard came over to help. "Boyfriend's not here yet?"

I forced a faint smile. "Something came up."

The guard loaded my box into the trunk of a cab before setting my mint plant on the seat next to me. Only after the car pulled away did a private message from Julian pop up. "Anna, are you still at the office?"

Right after that, he sent another message. "Emmie's moving today. I thought Francis was going to pick you up."

Francis messaged me soon after. "I thought Julian had already gone to get you."

Henry said, "I thought you guys had it all sorted."

As I stared at their excuses, I suddenly found everything laughable. Everyone was counting on someone else to deal with me, so in the end, I was left standing outside the office building.

Julian asked, "Do you still want me to go to you?"

I looked down, staring at the red marks on the back of my hand before replying, "No need."

When I got home that night, I found Emily sitting beside a suitcase in the living room.

She still had her coat on, a toiletry bag clutched in her arms. "Anna, I'm so sorry to impose on you guys."

I stopped at the doorway. "What happened?"

"The water heater at my new place is broken. The property management says they can't fix it until tomorrow at the earliest. Could I crash here for just one night?"

Julian came out of the kitchen and went straight for her suitcase. "Of course you can. The guest room is empty anyway."

Francis took the bag from her hands. "Just let me know if you need anything."

Henry had already turned on the guest room light and made the bed for her.

Standing at the doorway, Emily said to me, "I'll only be here for one night and will leave tomorrow."

I gave a nod. Julian and the other two carried her things into the guest room, one item after another. As for the cardboard box that had just been unloaded from the cab, it sat in the entryway.

Half a year later, the project I led officially launched.During the project review, the client singled me out for praise, and the head of the company decided to put me in charge of a new project team. After the meeting, Rose handed me a document. "Congratulations, Ms. Harmon."I took it with a smile. "You can stop being so formal now.""Not a chance. You're now in charge of one of the company's key projects."That evening, the team went out for dinner. Katie had double-checked my dietary restrictions beforehand, and the drinks on the table had been switched to lemonade. When someone suggested a photo, I instinctively started to edge off to the side. Katie grabbed my arm. "Anna, you're standing in the middle."I looked at the frame on the phone screen before finally moving to the middle. When the shutter clicked, I was dead center.Everyone was looking at the camera. When I got home, Rose sent over the celebration photos and asked if she should post them on social media.I tho

Even after I turned them down, they still tried to reach me a few more times.Julian mailed my old books and photo albums to the company front desk. I asked Rose to collect the package for me. When I opened it, I found a letter inside. It was a very short letter. "These things belong to you, so I'm returning them. I'm sorry."I kept the photo albums and tossed the letter straight into the trash.Francis came by once after that.He didn't come inside. He just handed the security guard a paper bag. Inside were a few books I'd left behind during my college days.I accepted the books and asked the receptionist to tell him not to send me anything else. The receptionist asked if I wanted to return the paper bag. "There's no need."I took the books back to my office and waited until after work to open them.My name, which I'd written on the title page back in college, was still there, though the ink had faded a little.Flipping through, I found an old ticket stub slipped between the

The four waited outside my office building for three days. On the first day, I left through the underground parking lot, avoiding the main entrance altogether. On the second day, the receptionist told me they were still out there, so I stayed in the meeting room and finished revising the last report before clocking out.On the third afternoon, Rose came over to me. "Are you planning to avoid them forever?""They'll leave eventually.""But they've already been waiting for three days."I closed my laptop. "Then I'll just go see them."When I walked out of the building, the four of them were standing by the curb. The moment Julian saw me, he stepped forward. "Anna."I stopped in front of him. "What do you want from me?"Emily looked at me, exhaustion written all over her face. "I'm sorry."Her voice grew quieter after apologizing. "I was the one who deleted the files on your computer. At the time, all I could think about was my own presentation."I didn't know you needed them th

After joining Rose's company, I spent the first two days getting familiar with the project documents. The client had changed project leads twice, and the documents were scattered across several departments, with figures in the progress reports that wouldn’t reconcile.Rose handed me the files. "We originally planned to assign this project to someone else, but the client hasn't been happy with anyone so far. Take a look and see if you can handle it."I flipped through to the last page before asking, "Aren't we scheduled to give another presentation to them next week?""That's right.""Then we still have time."I reviewed the list of people in charge and their tasks, noting every missing piece of information along the way. That afternoon, I shared the new progress sheet in the project group chat. After looking it over, Katie Ruiz asked, "Anna, was this part something I missed earlier?""It's not that you missed it. The source data upstream simply changed. Get in touch with the su

Early the next morning, Julian went to my old company. The receptionist recognized him and politely said, "Ms. Harmon had already finished her exit paperwork yesterday.""Did she leave a forwarding address?""I'm afraid we can't share that.""Do you know which company she went to?"The receptionist shook her head again. "Ms. Harmon didn't say."Julian stood in the lobby, suddenly at a loss for what to ask next. The security guard recognized him. "Ms. Harmon came out holding quite a few things yesterday and had to wait for a while for a taxi. She seemed pretty calm when she left.""Did she get in touch with anyone?""I didn't notice."Francis tried HR, while Henry asked some of my former team members downstairs if they'd heard anything. They all got pretty much the same answers.I'd gone through the exit process, recovered the files on my laptop, and left without telling anyone where I was going.Back in the car, Julian opened his phone again. My profile picture was still the

Once the plane took off, I switched my phone to airplane mode. While I was still at the airport, I'd already blocked Julian, Emily, Francis, and Henry everywhere and left the group chat that had been part of my life for years. That left only four people in the group chat. They'd probably notice soon enough. But by then, I'd already be on my way to a new city.Rose was waiting for me at the arrivals exit. Seeing that all I had was one suitcase, she took my laptop bag from me. "Where's the rest of your stuff?""I'm leaving the rest behind for now."She gave me a look but didn't press me for an explanation. "The company's set you up with a short-term rental near the office. Once you get your bearings, you can take your time finding a place of your own."I gave a nod. Once the car got moving, I rested my forehead against the window. This city wasn't so different from the one I'd left behind. Cars were still backed up at the intersections, while the fading daylight gave way to dusk.
