Chapter 1

I, Anna Harmon, had just finished replying to Rose Wilson when a private message from my boyfriend, Julian Dickson, popped up.

"You got laid off today, right? Since you're free anyway, do me a favor and pick up the cake on your way there."

I stared at that message for a long time without moving. He knew I'd been laid off, but he didn't ask if I'd cried or what I'd do next.

In his eyes, I'd simply ended up with some unexpected free time.

I set my phone face-down on the table and sat there for a few minutes. But after a while, I still got up and headed out.

At the bakery, the staff checked my order number before handing me a white gift box.

"It's a strawberry shortcake, with a congratulatory card for a promotion inside. Could you check that everything's correct?"

I opened the box and looked inside. The card read, "Emmie, wishing you a bright future and even greater success in your career."

I tucked the card back, picked up the cake, and headed to the riverside restaurant. When I opened the door to the private room, I found Emily Piper clinging to Julian's arm, mid-conversation.

"Anna, you're here!"

With a smile, she got up, saying, "Thanks for going out of your way to get it."

"No problem."

I set the cake down by the wall.

Julian barely glanced at it, then pulled out the chair next to him. "Let's eat first. We'll cut the cake later."

Once I sat down, the servers started bringing out the food. Emily's promotion was the only thing anyone talked about throughout dinner.

When she mentioned her new office was on the 26th floor with a river view, Julian immediately asked if she needed new blackout curtains.

When she mentioned that her neck and shoulders had been aching lately, Francis Loomis set down his utensils. "I'll take you for physiotherapy on Saturday. I happen to know a good place."

Henry Parsons picked the cilantro off her plate. "Don't eat that. Cilantro always upsets your stomach."

The three of them took turns doting on Emily, making sure she was taken care of in every possible way. With my fork in hand, I tried several times to get a word in. "Today, I—"

Emily's phone rang, and she looked down to reply to a message.

Julian asked her, "Are the people in your new department easy to get along with?"

Just like that, the conversation moved on. I picked up a piece of fish and ate it slowly.

After the meal, Julian brought out a gift box from beside his chair. "Emmie, congrats on the promotion."

Emily opened the box to find a platinum necklace inside. "Is this the one I was looking at in the mall last time?"

"You went back to look at it three whole times."

Francis handed her a massage device. "Use this for 15 minutes every night. Don't skip it just because you can't be bothered."

Henry brought out a bottle of perfume. "You said you liked woody notes. I had to check several stores before I found this one."

Emily covered her mouth, her eyes sparkling with delight. "You all remembered?"

Julian flashed her a smile. "Of course we'd remember. It's you we're talking about."

I dropped my gaze. When I got promoted last year, I'd shared the news in this same group chat.

Julian said we'd celebrate another day, Francis sent a clapping emoji, and Henry said we'd talk more that evening.

Later, when Emily mentioned that her stomach hurt, everyone spent half the evening fussing over her. And just like that, the celebration was never mentioned again.

Suddenly, Julian shoved his phone into my hand. "Anna, take a picture of us. Hurry, the candles are almost ready."

With the phone in hand, I walked over to the other side of the private room. Once the candles were lit, Emily stood in the middle, with Julian and the other two gathered around her.

I snapped the picture. After looking at the photo, Emily waved me over. "Anna, you should come over here too. Let's take one with all five of us next."

I had barely taken a step when Julian spoke up. "Let's take your pictures first, Emmie. The candles are about to go out. We'll take one with all five of us later."

I stopped where I stood. After that, they cut the cake, opened the gifts, and posted the pictures on social media. Not one of them mentioned that group photo again.

  • I Was Never Part of the Squad   Chapter 10

Half a year later, the project I led officially launched.During the project review, the client singled me out for praise, and the head of the company decided to put me in charge of a new project team. After the meeting, Rose handed me a document. "Congratulations, Ms. Harmon."I took it with a smile. "You can stop being so formal now.""Not a chance. You're now in charge of one of the company's key projects."That evening, the team went out for dinner. Katie had double-checked my dietary restrictions beforehand, and the drinks on the table had been switched to lemonade. When someone suggested a photo, I instinctively started to edge off to the side. Katie grabbed my arm. "Anna, you're standing in the middle."I looked at the frame on the phone screen before finally moving to the middle. When the shutter clicked, I was dead center.Everyone was looking at the camera. When I got home, Rose sent over the celebration photos and asked if she should post them on social media.I tho

Even after I turned them down, they still tried to reach me a few more times.Julian mailed my old books and photo albums to the company front desk. I asked Rose to collect the package for me. When I opened it, I found a letter inside. It was a very short letter. "These things belong to you, so I'm returning them. I'm sorry."I kept the photo albums and tossed the letter straight into the trash.Francis came by once after that.He didn't come inside. He just handed the security guard a paper bag. Inside were a few books I'd left behind during my college days.I accepted the books and asked the receptionist to tell him not to send me anything else. The receptionist asked if I wanted to return the paper bag. "There's no need."I took the books back to my office and waited until after work to open them.My name, which I'd written on the title page back in college, was still there, though the ink had faded a little.Flipping through, I found an old ticket stub slipped between the

The four waited outside my office building for three days. On the first day, I left through the underground parking lot, avoiding the main entrance altogether. On the second day, the receptionist told me they were still out there, so I stayed in the meeting room and finished revising the last report before clocking out.On the third afternoon, Rose came over to me. "Are you planning to avoid them forever?""They'll leave eventually.""But they've already been waiting for three days."I closed my laptop. "Then I'll just go see them."When I walked out of the building, the four of them were standing by the curb. The moment Julian saw me, he stepped forward. "Anna."I stopped in front of him. "What do you want from me?"Emily looked at me, exhaustion written all over her face. "I'm sorry."Her voice grew quieter after apologizing. "I was the one who deleted the files on your computer. At the time, all I could think about was my own presentation."I didn't know you needed them th

After joining Rose's company, I spent the first two days getting familiar with the project documents. The client had changed project leads twice, and the documents were scattered across several departments, with figures in the progress reports that wouldn’t reconcile.Rose handed me the files. "We originally planned to assign this project to someone else, but the client hasn't been happy with anyone so far. Take a look and see if you can handle it."I flipped through to the last page before asking, "Aren't we scheduled to give another presentation to them next week?""That's right.""Then we still have time."I reviewed the list of people in charge and their tasks, noting every missing piece of information along the way. That afternoon, I shared the new progress sheet in the project group chat. After looking it over, Katie Ruiz asked, "Anna, was this part something I missed earlier?""It's not that you missed it. The source data upstream simply changed. Get in touch with the su

Early the next morning, Julian went to my old company. The receptionist recognized him and politely said, "Ms. Harmon had already finished her exit paperwork yesterday.""Did she leave a forwarding address?""I'm afraid we can't share that.""Do you know which company she went to?"The receptionist shook her head again. "Ms. Harmon didn't say."Julian stood in the lobby, suddenly at a loss for what to ask next. The security guard recognized him. "Ms. Harmon came out holding quite a few things yesterday and had to wait for a while for a taxi. She seemed pretty calm when she left.""Did she get in touch with anyone?""I didn't notice."Francis tried HR, while Henry asked some of my former team members downstairs if they'd heard anything. They all got pretty much the same answers.I'd gone through the exit process, recovered the files on my laptop, and left without telling anyone where I was going.Back in the car, Julian opened his phone again. My profile picture was still the

Once the plane took off, I switched my phone to airplane mode. While I was still at the airport, I'd already blocked Julian, Emily, Francis, and Henry everywhere and left the group chat that had been part of my life for years. That left only four people in the group chat. They'd probably notice soon enough. But by then, I'd already be on my way to a new city.Rose was waiting for me at the arrivals exit. Seeing that all I had was one suitcase, she took my laptop bag from me. "Where's the rest of your stuff?""I'm leaving the rest behind for now."She gave me a look but didn't press me for an explanation. "The company's set you up with a short-term rental near the office. Once you get your bearings, you can take your time finding a place of your own."I gave a nod. Once the car got moving, I rested my forehead against the window. This city wasn't so different from the one I'd left behind. Cars were still backed up at the intersections, while the fading daylight gave way to dusk.
