Chapter 2

Author: Year on Year
I hung up on him.

At some point, the rain outside grew heavier and began pounding against the window.

I put my phone on silent and stood there for a long time.

A cold draft slipped through the frame and sent a chill through me.

I was not like this ten years ago.

Back then, I had just graduated from college and found a decent job in my hometown. My parents worked good jobs. We were not very rich, but we had a comfortable life.

Jackson had come to town on a business trip, and we met through a friend. We dated for a year before I followed him to this northern city.

In the beginning, my parents did not approve of my choice. They were worried that I would be taken advantage of.

In the end, they could not dissuade me and agreed to let me marry Jackson.

The day I left my hometown, Mom cried so hard that she could barely speak. At the train station, Dad said, “Come home if things get bad. I can still afford to take care of you.”

I hugged my mother, chuckled, and told them not to worry. I told them that Jackson treated me well and that I would be fine.

Indeed, Jackson treated me well at the start.

During the early days of our marriage, he felt bad seeing me commute to work every day. Because of that, he saved three months’ salary to get me a Vespa.

I told him that I did not need one, but he told me that his wife had to have the best.

Then, he got a promotion and his work got busier. He got a stomach ulcer that only kept worsening.

I quit my job to cook for him because I loved him so much.

I spent every day cooking healthy, balanced, and tasty meals for him.

To make sure I made it in time for his lunch, I carefully packaged everything and rode my Vespa for twenty minutes to bring it to his office.

At the beginning, he tried to talk me out of doing it, saying that it was too much work.

I told him that it was not that hard for me and that I felt better knowing that he was eating what I cooked for him.

After that, I kept doing it for the next ten years.

In that time, I gave birth to a son and a daughter. I lost my figure and did not get it back.

I put all my thoughts and effort into the family. I cooked for him, raised the kids, and managed the household chores.

There was no time left to dress up or care about how I looked. Besides, it was not like I had anywhere to go where I needed to dress myself up.

The most expensive makeup I had was from before I got married. It had expired long ago.

It was not like I never noticed myself getting older.

I would be taken aback sometimes when I saw the fine lines at the corners of my eyes and the whites in my hair.

But I would convince myself that we were a family, and Jackson did not care how I looked since he appreciated all I did for him.

For the past ten years, I would make lunch and leave promptly to deliver it to him. I rarely ever stayed long at his office.

At least, that was true until this afternoon.

It had been raining. It was practically storming. I had wrapped the food container with my raincoat, securing it under three layers of protection. But I was sodden through.

By the time I got to Jackson’s office building, my pants were wet all the way up to my thighs. My hair stuck to my face even as water kept dripping down.

I thought I could go up and wait a while for the rain to slacken before leaving. It really was only for a little while.

Instead of worrying that I might catch a cold, Jackson only cared that I was embarrassing him.

When I came back to myself, I looked at the card in my hand.

There was $150,000 in the account.

Jackson had given me that money as a wedding gift. Mom had told me to save it, reminding me that it was important for a woman to have some money of her own, just in case.

I had never touched this money, not even when things were bad at home.

I sat by the bed in a daze.

My thoughts were all over the place. I tried to focus, but nothing would stay in my head for long.

I turned around and pulled Lila and Lionel outside. Outside the restaurant, the evening breeze was a little cold. Mom and Dad followed behind me without saying anything. When we got to the car, Dad suddenly called my name. I turned around. He looked at me with red eyes. “I support you fully,” he said. Mom came over and took my hand. She did not say anything and patted my hand gently. That night, after getting home, I sat by the window for a long time. My phone buzzed several times with texts from Jackson. I did not look at them. The moon shone brightly outside the window, shining down on many homes. I recalled how I had left my hometown and come to this unfamiliar city alone ten years ago. Back then, I had been filled with hope, believing that love, happiness, and a happy home were waiting for me in my marriage.Ten years had passed since then. I had two children and was divorced. All I wanted was to start over.I had no regrets. That was because I finally under

“Enough!” Jackson roared. Everyone was stunned. He looked at Rose and then at Claire. His face was red. His voice trembled as he said, “That’s enough from all of you! Just stop talking!”“How dare you, Jackson?” Claire’s eyes widened in disbelief. Jackson said hoarsely, “Mom, it’s Lionel’s birthday today. You can join in if you want, but don’t throw a tantrum here. You won’t like what I’ll do if you keep this up.”Claire was taken aback. “You’ll really kick me out for them?”“No. I won’t kick you out. I’m begging you to please stop causing a fuss. It was my fault, not Cerise’s. Her parents aren’t wrong either. Don’t make trouble for them.”Claire’s face turned pale. Rose opened her mouth but could not say anything. Looking at Jackson, I suddenly felt like I was in a daze. This was the first time I had ever seen him act this way in ten years. In the past, he would hide or try to smooth things over whenever Claire and I got into an argument. He had never taken my side.

I looked into Jackson’s eyes silently. Mom stood up. “Enough! Let’s stop talking about this. The past is done. What is the point of all that now anyway?”Dad had more to say, but Mom stopped him. Jackson stood there helplessly. Looking at him, I suddenly felt like I was looking at a stranger. I had been with this man for a decade. I used to think that I understood him, but the truth was that I did not know him at all.Right then, the door to the private room burst open. “Jackson Holloway!” cried a sharp voice. I turned to find Claire there, with Rose right behind her. They stormed in. When they spotted us, their expressions darkened. Claire pointed at us. “Good! I knew you’d be here!”Jackson’s face turned pale, and he hurried to intercept Claire. “What are you doing here, Mom?”“Why can’t I be here?” Claire shoved him away. “My grandson is celebrating his birthday. Why can’t I be here?”Claire came up to me and gave me a once-over. She scoffed and said, “Well do

Jackson was silent for a long time. Then, he said, “I want to apologize to them. I treated you badly and owe you and them an apology.”I did not respond. “I know you might not believe me, but I want to put every effort into being a better person. I’m not planning anything. “It’s for the kids. I don’t want them to wonder why they couldn’t celebrate their birthdays together with their grandparents.”I hung up and thought about it for a long time. That evening, I went to my parents’ apartment for dinner and told them about our conversation.Dad’s expression was stormy. “I’m not going. I get mad just looking at him.”Mom tried to calm him down. “Let Cerise finish, David.”I looked at him. “Dad, if you really don’t want to join, I’ll tell him.”Dad did not reply. “What do you think, Cerise?” Mom asked. I told her I did not know either. After a long silence, Dad finally said, “Alright, I’ll join. I want to see what kind of apology he can come up with.”That Saturday evenin

After the meal, Jackson left, and I stood in the kitchen alone for a long time. The faucet ran, and water gushed in the sink. I stared at the bowl in my hand without moving. When he had said those words, his voice had been low, as though he had forced them out.“Your cooking still tastes the same.”I did not know how I felt. I had been with him for ten years, but this was the first time I felt he was truly remorseful. But what would that do? It would change nothing in our relationship. That night, I called Mom and told her about Jackson joining us for dinner. Mom was silent for a while before asking, “What are you thinking, Cerise?”I told her I did not know. “Then, take your time thinking about it. Don’t rush. Once we get back, we can discuss this together.”I agreed and hung up. I sat by the window and watched the moon outside. It was a full moon that night. Before the divorce, I always cooked up a storm and waited for him to come home for dinner. Jackson rarely

I left. After walking some distance away, I looked back. Jackson was still standing there looking at me. He was frozen in place. That night, I called Mom. “Mom.”“What is it, Cerise?”“Nothing. I just miss you.”Mom laughed. “Silly girl, we’ll be back once we’re done here.”“Okay,” I said. “Where’s Dad, Mom?”“Watching TV. David, Cerise wants to talk to you.”Dad came to the phone. “How are things, Cerise?”“Everything’s fine, Dad. I just wanted to ask you how selling the house is going.”“We’ll be done soon. Someone’s interested, and we’re talking things out.”“Dad…” I paused before continuing, “Thank you.”Dad was silent on the other end of the line.“Silly girl, you don’t need to thank me. I’m your father,” he said. After hanging up, I sat by the window and looked at the lights outside. This city was very active at night, and the lights flickered as cars veered past.I had lived here for eleven years, but this was the first time I felt like it was not so foreign
