Chapter 1

Jackson Holloway’s voice was urgent and worried on the other end of the line.

“What’s the meaning of this, Cerise? Did you really run off with our children in the middle of the night because of that little thing this afternoon?

“Do you have any idea how hard it is at work? My colleagues and higher-ups were all there. Do you know how embarrassing it was for me that you sat in the lobby in that get-up?”

I stood by the window of my rented apartment and looked at the drizzle outside.

“That little thing?” My voice was calm.

“You think that was just a small thing, Jackson?”

“I only told you to go home. It couldn’t have been raining that hard. You can survive a little rain. Was it so bad that you had to run off with our kids?”

Jackson’s voice got louder and louder.

“Come back immediately! Stop throwing a tantrum. It’s honestly embarrassing.”

I looked down at my ring finger.

After ten years of marriage, I was still wearing the silver ring he had bought me for our wedding.

Back then, he said he would get me a gold one once his finances improved. I had waited ten years for that to happen.

I would not have to wait any longer.

“I’m not going home. Get ready for a divorce, Jackson.”

A stunned silence hung for a beat, then Jackson sputtered out a laugh.

“What nonsense is this? Divorce? Have you gone mad, Cerise?”

“I’m perfectly sane.”

I turned around, put my back to the cool glass, and regarded the cramped apartment.

The two children were squeezed together on the small bed. They slept soundly. The younger one was clutching his teddy bear tightly that he had brought from home.

“You said I was your cousin. Well, it isn’t right for your cousin to live in your house with her children, is it? Isn’t this what you wanted?”

“You’re really doing this because of what I said? Get a grip, Cerise! I was only trying to smooth things over with my colleagues. Are you really going to take something I just said that seriously?”

“Something you just said…” I parroted and burst out in laughter.

“Did you consider my feelings when you said that, Jackson? You know very well why I’ve ended up this way.”

“What do you want, exactly?”

“I told you. I want a divorce.”

“Alright then, you witch!” Jackson’s voice was icy. “I’m warning you, Cerise Snowden. Don’t you try coming back after leaving like this. Don’t come crying back to me after this.”

I turned around and pulled Lila and Lionel outside. Outside the restaurant, the evening breeze was a little cold. Mom and Dad followed behind me without saying anything. When we got to the car, Dad suddenly called my name. I turned around. He looked at me with red eyes. “I support you fully,” he said. Mom came over and took my hand. She did not say anything and patted my hand gently. That night, after getting home, I sat by the window for a long time. My phone buzzed several times with texts from Jackson. I did not look at them. The moon shone brightly outside the window, shining down on many homes. I recalled how I had left my hometown and come to this unfamiliar city alone ten years ago. Back then, I had been filled with hope, believing that love, happiness, and a happy home were waiting for me in my marriage.Ten years had passed since then. I had two children and was divorced. All I wanted was to start over.I had no regrets. That was because I finally under

“Enough!” Jackson roared. Everyone was stunned. He looked at Rose and then at Claire. His face was red. His voice trembled as he said, “That’s enough from all of you! Just stop talking!”“How dare you, Jackson?” Claire’s eyes widened in disbelief. Jackson said hoarsely, “Mom, it’s Lionel’s birthday today. You can join in if you want, but don’t throw a tantrum here. You won’t like what I’ll do if you keep this up.”Claire was taken aback. “You’ll really kick me out for them?”“No. I won’t kick you out. I’m begging you to please stop causing a fuss. It was my fault, not Cerise’s. Her parents aren’t wrong either. Don’t make trouble for them.”Claire’s face turned pale. Rose opened her mouth but could not say anything. Looking at Jackson, I suddenly felt like I was in a daze. This was the first time I had ever seen him act this way in ten years. In the past, he would hide or try to smooth things over whenever Claire and I got into an argument. He had never taken my side.

I looked into Jackson’s eyes silently. Mom stood up. “Enough! Let’s stop talking about this. The past is done. What is the point of all that now anyway?”Dad had more to say, but Mom stopped him. Jackson stood there helplessly. Looking at him, I suddenly felt like I was looking at a stranger. I had been with this man for a decade. I used to think that I understood him, but the truth was that I did not know him at all.Right then, the door to the private room burst open. “Jackson Holloway!” cried a sharp voice. I turned to find Claire there, with Rose right behind her. They stormed in. When they spotted us, their expressions darkened. Claire pointed at us. “Good! I knew you’d be here!”Jackson’s face turned pale, and he hurried to intercept Claire. “What are you doing here, Mom?”“Why can’t I be here?” Claire shoved him away. “My grandson is celebrating his birthday. Why can’t I be here?”Claire came up to me and gave me a once-over. She scoffed and said, “Well do

Jackson was silent for a long time. Then, he said, “I want to apologize to them. I treated you badly and owe you and them an apology.”I did not respond. “I know you might not believe me, but I want to put every effort into being a better person. I’m not planning anything. “It’s for the kids. I don’t want them to wonder why they couldn’t celebrate their birthdays together with their grandparents.”I hung up and thought about it for a long time. That evening, I went to my parents’ apartment for dinner and told them about our conversation.Dad’s expression was stormy. “I’m not going. I get mad just looking at him.”Mom tried to calm him down. “Let Cerise finish, David.”I looked at him. “Dad, if you really don’t want to join, I’ll tell him.”Dad did not reply. “What do you think, Cerise?” Mom asked. I told her I did not know either. After a long silence, Dad finally said, “Alright, I’ll join. I want to see what kind of apology he can come up with.”That Saturday evenin

After the meal, Jackson left, and I stood in the kitchen alone for a long time. The faucet ran, and water gushed in the sink. I stared at the bowl in my hand without moving. When he had said those words, his voice had been low, as though he had forced them out.“Your cooking still tastes the same.”I did not know how I felt. I had been with him for ten years, but this was the first time I felt he was truly remorseful. But what would that do? It would change nothing in our relationship. That night, I called Mom and told her about Jackson joining us for dinner. Mom was silent for a while before asking, “What are you thinking, Cerise?”I told her I did not know. “Then, take your time thinking about it. Don’t rush. Once we get back, we can discuss this together.”I agreed and hung up. I sat by the window and watched the moon outside. It was a full moon that night. Before the divorce, I always cooked up a storm and waited for him to come home for dinner. Jackson rarely

I left. After walking some distance away, I looked back. Jackson was still standing there looking at me. He was frozen in place. That night, I called Mom. “Mom.”“What is it, Cerise?”“Nothing. I just miss you.”Mom laughed. “Silly girl, we’ll be back once we’re done here.”“Okay,” I said. “Where’s Dad, Mom?”“Watching TV. David, Cerise wants to talk to you.”Dad came to the phone. “How are things, Cerise?”“Everything’s fine, Dad. I just wanted to ask you how selling the house is going.”“We’ll be done soon. Someone’s interested, and we’re talking things out.”“Dad…” I paused before continuing, “Thank you.”Dad was silent on the other end of the line.“Silly girl, you don’t need to thank me. I’m your father,” he said. After hanging up, I sat by the window and looked at the lights outside. This city was very active at night, and the lights flickered as cars veered past.I had lived here for eleven years, but this was the first time I felt like it was not so foreign
