Chapter 3

Author: Bright Lights
Naturally, my problems no longer mattered to her.

Maybe it was for the best. Elena had been so heartless, and there was nothing left for me to hold on to.

At the same time, I was glad that I could leave her without hesitation.

My old injury was in bad shape, and I needed surgery.

While waiting to be called into the operating room, I scrolled through my phone to pass the time.

That was when I came across Ivan's latest Instagram post.

The caption read, "Broke my leg slipping in the rain. Thanks to Ms. Coleman, I'm recovering well!"

In the photo, Ivan grinned and flashed a peace sign while Elena stood behind him, smiling at him.

There was so much love in the way she looked at him.

I had seen that look before, as Elena used to look at me the same way.

But now, she was looking at someone else like that, and it made me sick.

I quietly put my phone away and went into the operating room alone.

The surgery went more smoothly than I had expected, but it hurt a lot.

As the cold surgical instruments entered my body, I told myself this would be the last time I would ever get hurt because of Elena, and that I would make her pay a hundred times over for the pain I had endured today.

After surgery, I was resting in bed when a call from an unknown number interrupted my peace.

It was Elena.

She just wouldn't leave me alone. How revolting.

"Are you still mad at me? Is that why you blocked my number?"

She sighed, her voice full of affection, as if I was a kid making a fuss.

"Come on, don't be mad. I'll bring you something delicious when I get home tonight."

I had no idea what was going through Elena's mind.

What made her think she could make up for cheating on me with a single meal?

In her eyes, it was probably no big deal, and I should just be the bigger person and forgive her.

"Ms. Coleman, stop chatting and come eat!"

Ivan's voice came through the phone again.

Those two were so lovey-dovey that they were practically joined at the hip.

"Where are you?"

Perhaps my tone had been too cold, because Elena suddenly stammered.

"I-I'm at Ivan's place."

Then, as if afraid I would get the wrong idea, she quickly added, "Don't overthink it. He just wanted to thank me."

I was so exhausted after surgery that I barely had the strength to keep questioning her.

I simply listened in silence, wondering what other excuses she could come up with.

When I didn't respond, she grew anxious.

"Julian, there's really nothing going on between us. Don't get the wrong idea. He just wanted to cook something for me to thank me for taking care of him. Please, don't—"

Ivan's cheerful voice interrupted her explanation. "What are you doing, Ms. Coleman? Come on, hurry up!"

Elena lowered her voice and quickly added, “I have to go. Wait for me at home, okay?”

Then she hung up.

I let out a bitter laugh.

Elena had been so busy explaining herself that she hadn't noticed how weak I sounded.

She was asking me to wait for her at home again, but she and I no longer had a home together.

No one would wait for her forever.

After hanging up, I called my lawyer.

"She has already signed the papers. Yes, the agreement clearly states that she'll walk away with nothing."

"Please take care of everything over the next few days and sell the house we're living in now. I'm disgusted by it."

"Yes, don't leave her with anything.”

After ending the call with my lawyer, I wanted to burst out laughing.

But I was afraid of hurting my wound, so I only chuckled a couple of times.

I wasn't the kind of person who would let people walk all over me.

After everything Elena had put me through, I was going to make sure she learned her lesson too.

I wondered if Elena still remembered her promise.

Before we got married, I had warned her, "Don't even think about cheating on me. I'll know immediately if you ever do."

Back then, Elena had looked at me affectionately and teased me. "Really? You have superpowers now?"

I really did have some special powers, but she just didn't know it.

I had never told her that I could read minds.

"Anyway, I'm making this clear right now. If you ever cheat on me, I'll make sure you walk away from this marriage with nothing."

Elena had burst out laughing before giving me a salute.

"Yes, sir!"

Back then, we had thought it was nothing more than a joke.

After all, we both knew that Elena only had eyes for me back when she was twenty-five.

I never thought my words would come true, but they did.

I didn't care what Elena thought anymore or whether she still remembered our promise.

I was going to take back everything that was mine!

But every time, I would either mock her or make fun of her. When she realized she couldn't get me to help her, she finally stopped reaching out to me.The next time I heard about Elena and Ivan, they were in the news."A woman and her boyfriend got into a violent fight at home and accidentally fell from their balcony. Fortunately, neither of them suffered life-threatening injuries."Although their faces had been blurred, I recognized them at a glance. It was Elena and Ivan.Only then did I find out that, after failing to attract investors, Elena had turned to online loans and lost all the money she had borrowed. She had already borrowed money from everyone she could think of. With nowhere else to turn, she finally turned to me, but I had refused to lend her any.Her attempt to start a business failed, leaving her buried in debt.In the beginning, Ivan would encourage Elena, and they were pretty sweet together. However, after Elena's business failed and her pride took a hit,

I shrugged indifferently."Whatever. I've got money." I walked away after saying that, and Elena didn't chase after me this time. Maybe I had finally shattered what little pride she had left. After that, Elena started another business, perhaps to prove herself. How did I find out?Because Ivan posted a hundred times a day on Instagram, showing off his lovey-dovey life with Elena.I just treated it as free entertainment. They were basically my personal reality show.Even before boarding my flight, I scrolled through Ivan's Instagram posts, enjoying every bit of it."Aww, Ms. Coleman works so hard, so I made her a healthy meal to help her recharge!"He had posted a photo of Elena working on her computer at her desk, along with a selfie of himself flashing a peace sign."A genius is a genius no matter where they go. Some people will regret throwing away a gem like her sooner or later."I wondered if he was talking about me. I couldn't help laughing when I saw that post.I

Elena pleaded with me as if she truly cared about her company."Are you sure you've worked hard? When you left your company behind to take care of Ivan at the hospital and ignored your business affairs, where was all that hard work then?"Elena had barely shown up at the company while she was taking care of Ivan, yet now, she had the nerve to tell me how much the company meant to her."No, that's not true! I didn't!" Elena immediately denied it, but actions spoke louder than words."You know whether you did or not, and your behavior has upset the company's management. So, as the person in charge of the company, I'm firing you."I deliberately announced Elena's dismissal in court, crushing her pride.Hearing this, Elena clutched her head in anguish and screamed at me."Julian, do you really have to ruin me?"Ruin her? This was only the beginning. She should've known this day would come the moment she cheated on me.All the evidence supported my claims, and Elena lost the case.

I caught Ivan glaring at me jealously several times.I was glad to see how miserable the two of them looked. When it was my turn to speak, I presented the surveillance footage from the hospital hallway that day.The footage clearly showed that I hadn't deceived Elena. She was so eager to get back to Ivan that she had signed the papers without reading them. "Your Honor, does that count as deliberate deception? Wasn't she the one who didn't bother reading the papers?"As I spoke, I stared straight at Elena. Her face turned red with anger."Then why didn't you tell me it was a divorce agreement? You tricked me on purpose!""The words 'divorce agreement' were right there on the cover. Couldn't you read them? How is it my fault if you didn't bother to open your eyes?"I didn't back down in the face of her accusations."You—You..." Elena couldn't come up with anything to say in her defense.Seeing Elena at a disadvantage, Ivan, who had accompanied her to court, couldn't hold

I scoffed. "I'm not joking. You agreed to the divorce too. Remember the document I asked you to sign at the hospital? You signed it without hesitation."Elena went pale and said in a trembling voice, "I didn't know it was a divorce agreement! That doesn't count!"I was getting impatient. For the first time, I realized how relentless Elena could be."I gave you a chance to read it, and I didn't hide anything from you. You were too busy thinking about Ivan, so you signed it without even looking."My words seemed to jog Elena's memory. She tried to argue but couldn't get a word out.I pressed on. "Besides, the agreement clearly states that you'll walk away with nothing, so pack your bags and get the hell out of my house!"Elena shouted in disbelief, "You're divorcing me just because I haven't been home for a few days? And you want me to walk away with nothing? You must be joking, right?"I almost laughed. No wonder she had been so confident about trying to make up with me. I

I spent some time recovering in the hospital.During that period, Elena didn't contact me at all.I guessed she still hadn't gone home. Otherwise, she would've made a fuss about me moving out.Still, it was nice not having her bother me.Once I had recovered, I booked a flight to Solara Island for a short getaway.I was enjoying the view and checking out the beautiful women on the beach when Elena called. What a mood killer. She sounded anxious and a little impatient, though she didn't seem to realize it."Julian, where's all your luggage? Are you angry because I haven't come home these past few days?"Well, look who finally noticed I had moved out."I wanted to come home after dinner that day, but Ivan still needed me, so I…"She didn't finish, but I understood what she meant.Of course, she had decided to stay and take care of Ivan. What a pathetic excuse.I almost laughed."And what's with that lawyer?
