Chapter 2

作者: Wrenwood
Cora went to the county courthouse herself.

She remembered how happy she had been when she first walked through those doors to marry Ethan. Now, as she filed for divorce, her heart ached just as deeply. Still, she had no regrets.

She had been willing to keep their marriage a secret for love. Now that love was gone, she was willing to end it.

The clerk quickly processed her paperwork. There was still a thirty-day waiting period before the divorce could be finalized. Once it was final, she and Ethan would have nothing left tying them together.

Cora walked out of the courthouse feeling lighter than she had in years.

She drove to the office, intending to submit her resignation and pack up her belongings before leaving for good.

But the moment she arrived, she spotted two familiar faces.

Madison was clinging to Ethan’s arm, acting so intimately with him in front of everyone that she looked every bit the lady of the house.

Envious whispers rose from the surrounding employees.

“Mr. Caldwell and Miss Parker are such a perfect match. They make Secretary Mitchell look like a complete fool. She stripped down to seduce a man, only to end up as a shameless homewrecker who could never become his rightful wife!”

Their words pierced Cora like a blade.

She was Ethan’s actual wife, yet now she was being treated like a mistress, despised and humiliated by everyone around her.

Unable to bear another word, Cora turned to leave, but Madison abruptly stepped in front of her.

With a contemptuous smile, she held out an invitation.

“Cora, you’ve spent years taking care of Ethan for me. You’ve certainly earned your keep. You’ll come to our engagement party, won’t you?”

It was nothing less than a blatant insult.

Trembling with anger, Cora let out a cold laugh.

“Miss Parker, how generous of you. Aren’t you worried Mr. Caldwell might still be unable to forget me?”

Madison suddenly burst out laughing.

As if Cora had just told the funniest joke in the world, she laughed until tears gathered in her eyes. Then she turned and threw herself into Ethan’s arms, pouting playfully.

“Ethan, you’re not going to fall in love with Cora, are you?”

Ethan gave a helpless little snort.

“Madison, stop teasing me. I don’t get involved with women from my own workplace.”

With that single sentence, he dismissed everything they had ever shared.

Cora slowly closed her eyes, allowing her tears to fall in silence.

She had always known Ethan would never acknowledge their relationship in public. Even so, hearing him deny it with her own ears still hurt.

Ethan cared about profit. He cared about the company. The only person he didn’t care about was her.

The promises he had once made now seemed like a cruel joke.

Cora managed a bitter smile and turned away.

But she had barely left the building when the Caldwell family’s bodyguards seized her, forced her into a car, and took her to the family patriarch.

The old man, Frederick Caldwell, looked down at her with undisguised contempt.

“Ms. Mitchell, I thought you were smarter than this. I never imagined you’d do something so foolish as to sabotage the partnership between the Caldwell and Parker families!”

As soon as he finished speaking, one of the bodyguards pressed play on a recording.

A familiar voice filled the room...

Cora’s face drained of color.

So the Caldwell family believed she had staged and leaked the video herself to force her way up the social ladder!

The accusation was absurd. She immediately tried to defend herself.

“It wasn’t me! Madison Parker did it!”

But Frederick refused to believe her. In a fit of rage, he ordered the family enforcers to carry out their punishment against her.

At that critical moment, Ethan arrived.

Frowning, he stepped in front of Cora, his voice firm.

“Cora is my wife. If she’s done something wrong, punish me instead.”

Cora’s eyes grew hot, and a glimmer of hope rose in her heart.

But before she could let herself believe he meant it, Frederick sneered.

“Hmph! This woman staged the whole thing to sabotage the alliance between the Caldwell and Parker families. Do you have any idea how much damage that could do to the company? And you still intend to protect her?”

Before he could finish, Ethan’s expression changed completely.

He seized Cora by the wrist, his voice turning harsh.

“Cora, you’re being incredibly unreasonable!

“The partnership between the Caldwell and Parker families is crucial to us. We can’t afford even the slightest mishap, or all our efforts will have been for nothing. Why can’t you just be sensible for once?”

Cora froze.

The little hope that had just begun to bloom inside her vanished, replaced by a blow that struck her harder than any slap.

It felt as though her heart had been ripped open, leaving her barely able to breathe.

At last, she understood.

It wasn’t that Ethan no longer loved her at all. It was that he didn’t love her enough anymore.

More than a decade of devotion had ultimately meant less to him than power and status.

When they learned that she was the very girl who had saved their son’s life when he was a child, they were even more delighted with her.On the wedding day, Cora wore a pristine white gown and walked toward Alexander one step at a time, her heart overflowing with happiness. At the very back of the crowd, Ethan stood hidden among the guests. He gazed longingly at the woman in her wedding dress. Suddenly, he remembered when they had registered their marriage years ago. Back then, all they had was a marriage certificate. They hadn’t even had a wedding dress.Cora had suffered for so many years. Now, at last, she had finally come through the darkness and found her happiness.Ethan f

When the video of Cora’s victory made its way back home, Ethan was drowning his sorrows at a bar.Madison arrived with several people in tow and sneered at him.“Why aren’t you trying to get your shares back? What kind of life is this—getting wasted here every day? Grandpa is already thinking about giving up on you and grooming a new heir!”Ethan remained unmoved. He had given up on recovering the shares. It was obvious that Alexander had no intention of negotiating with him. Even if Ethan went to see him, all he would accomplish was humiliating himself. What was the point? He had spent a long time reflecting on his life. From the moment he had reunited with his biological family, his ultimate goal had been to give Cora a better life. But now that she was gone, did any of his efforts still mean anything?Ethan no longer knew.He was simply exhausted.Watching him sink deeper into despair made Madison grit her teeth in frustration. Ever since her face had been disfigured, no on

The competition arrived right on schedule. As a contestant, Cora advanced through round after round. But when she finally reached the finals, she realized just how formidable her competitors were. Most of them were prodigies from around the world. Some had graduated from prestigious music schools, while others came from families with generations of piano virtuosos.Compared to them, she felt incredibly small.Alexander couldn’t help reassuring her.“Whatever the final result, at least you gave it everything you had. To me, you’ll always be the champion.”He had even commissioned a trophy especially for her.It was a replica of the official trophy, down to the smallest detail. Even if both trophies were displayed side by side onstage, the organizers probably wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.Cora didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at his gesture. She had entered the competition to fulfill her dream, not to take home a trophy. Still, knowing how much thought Alexander had pu

Ethan’s mind went completely blank. He had never imagined that Cora and Alexander would end up together.Suddenly, many of the things he hadn’t been able to figure out began to make sense. He stared dazedly at their intertwined hands, unable to name the emotions churning inside him. Regret? Heartbreak? Perhaps both.“When did you two get together?”Cora answered coldly, “I suppose I have you to thank for that, Mr. Caldwell. If you hadn’t treated me the way you did, I might never have realized that there was someone in this world who had been quietly looking out for me all along.”Ethan staggered backward a few steps, his expression growing even grimmer. He abruptly closed his eyes, as though making a decision. Then he stepped forward and grabbed Cora roughly by the wrist.“Cory, I’m willing to put everything that happened in the past behind us.“Alexander isn’t as wonderful as you think. He’s only getting close to you because he wants those shares. You’re too trusting, and he’

The next morning, as Cora stepped outside, she noticed a Maybach parked near the entrance. She froze for a moment, an uneasy suspicion forming in her mind. Could it be Ethan Caldwell? Her first instinct was to run. But then she remembered that this was Alexander’s territory. They were also overseas, far from Ethan’s usual sphere of influence. No matter how powerful Ethan was, he couldn’t simply do as he pleased on someone else’s turf. With that thought, Cora steadied herself and stood her ground.Sure enough, a moment later, a man stepped out of the car.Ethan looked far more worn out than before, his former confidence and arrogance nowhere to be seen.“Cora, have you been doing okay?”He parted his lips, his voice strained. He should have hated her. Yet whenever he tried to hold on to that hatred, memories of their happier days together inevitably came flooding back. The irony was almost laughable. When she had been by his side, he hadn’t known how to cherish her. Now that

Alexander could hardly believe his ears. What had he just heard?“Cory, could you say that again? I think I just heard you say you’re willing to give us a chance.”The usually composed and mature man suddenly sounded like a child. He stumbled over his words, fumbling for a response. For once, he seemed completely at a loss.Cora felt even more certain of her decision. A radiant smile spread across her face.“I said, why don’t we give this a try?”Alexander was overwhelmed with excitement. Wasn’t this the very thing he’d been waiting so long to hear? And now, he’d finally heard it!“Cory, I promise I won’t let you down.“I understand why you’re being cautious, so give me three months. If you still haven’t fallen completely in love with me by then, we can go our separate ways, okay?”He didn’t want to hold back the woman he loved. But he also wanted to give himself a chance. Cora had finally agreed to consider a relationship with him, and he knew he might not get another oppo
