Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Cutie Kitty
Martin caught me looking at him and gave me a disgusted look before turning back to Evelyn.

"There's no need to go to the hospital. You're too kind, Evelyn. That's why she keeps taking advantage of you. And if it weren't for what she did seven years ago, you never would've ended up in a coma.

"Donating part of her brainstem tissue doesn't make up for the seven years you lost."

I frowned. "Seven years ago? What did I do?"

Martin scoffed. "Willow, I only spared you the humiliation of being punished in front of everyone because you were still my wife. Did you really think no one knew what kind of person you were?

"Seven years ago, Evelyn was helping with one of your projects when she entered the wrong data by mistake and cost you the deal. You blamed the entire thing on her in front of everyone at a meeting.

"But that still wasn't enough for you. After work, you asked her to meet you somewhere without security cameras and pushed her down the stairs! So if anyone doesn't belong at this company, it's you!"

Before I could say anything, Joan frowned. "Martin, Willow spent two years on that project. Evelyn's mistake cost the company a contract worth tens of millions of dollars, and you're acting like it was nothing?

"And what happened afterward was investigated too. Evelyn claimed Willow pushed her down the stairs, but there was never any evidence to prove it. Willow's also the one who's been keeping this company running all these years. Without her, this place would've—"

Martin cut in coldly, "That's enough. This is my company. You're an outsider, so stay out of it. And at work, it's Mr. Gentry."

Watching him bend over backward to defend Evelyn, I clicked my tongue under my breath.

Apparently, he wasn't just a lousy husband. He was a lousy boss too.

If he let his personal feelings cloud his judgment when tens of millions of dollars were on the line, how was he supposed to run a company with hundreds of employees?

When I didn't respond, Martin clearly mistook my silence for guilt. A smug look crossed his face.

"Forget it. I didn't come here to argue with you. You donated part of your brainstem tissue to Evelyn, so at least you've tried to make amends. Apologize to her for what happened seven years ago, and I might go easier on you."

I shook my head and walked straight up to them. "There's no need, Mr. Gentry."

Martin smiled, apparently pleased that I was finally coming to my senses. "That's more like it. As long as you go back to being obedient, I promise there'll always be a place for you at this company."

Even now, he still thought I was the same woman he remembered. What he didn't know was that the surgery really had erased my memories.

I was no longer the wife who swallowed every grievance just to keep the peace. I was back to the person I'd been seven years ago, fresh out of college, full of dreams, and never afraid to stand up for myself.

I wasn't putting myself last for anyone ever again.

Before Martin could say another word, I handed him a document. "You misunderstood me, Mr. Gentry. I've already written my resignation letter. All you have to do is accept it.

"And as for the divorce papers, I don't care whether you sign them or not. I've already hired a lawyer and filed for divorce, so make sure you show up in court."

The moment Martin saw my resignation letter, his hand tightened around it, crumpling the page.

It wasn't until Evelyn spoke that he seemed to realize he'd lost his composure. His expression immediately hardened.

"Willow, are you threatening me? Do you really think that just because my family owes you for what happened back then, I'd be too worried about looking ungrateful to ever turn against you?"

"Owes me?"

Seeing my confusion, Joan quietly explained, "Seven years ago, the Gentry family was on the verge of collapse. You used your family's connections to help Martin. After his company went public, he married you because of everything you'd done for him."

Before I could even process that, Evelyn jumped at the chance to play the victim again. "Willow, I know you must resent me, but Martin and I are just friends. I used to work for him. That's all.

"He may have spent all these years praying for me and making sure I was taken care of every day, but he only did it because he cared about me as a friend. You're the one he's always loved."

Martin's smile only widened. "What am I trying to do? Isn't it obvious? I'm trying to win you back."He leaned closer, and I caught the faint scent of his cologne."Willow, you changed yourself for me once. Now it's my turn to change for you."Everyone around us fell silent. They stared at Martin in disbelief, their jaws practically dropping. This was Martin Gentry, the notoriously cold and intimidating CEO no one could ever get close to. Countless women had tried and failed, yet here he was, openly admitting that he wanted me back.It was almost impossible to believe.Everyone turned to me, waiting to see how I'd react. But I barely felt anything. If anything, I almost found the whole thing funny. The damage was already done. Even if Martin changed now, what difference would it make?"Martin, you don't have to do this. We're over. Just leave the past where it belongs."Martin didn't answer. He just kept drinking. Before long, he was so drunk he could barely stay on his feet.

I looked at Martin and spoke slowly and clearly. "I'm doing just fine the way I am."But Martin refused to believe me. "No! Willow, that's not true! You don't remember anything, so how can you possibly know if you're okay? You're only saying this because you're angry!"He clutched my hand, growing more desperate by the second. "You can't give up on treatment. You have to get your memories back!"The Ferris wheel slowly carried us back down until our cabin reached the ground.I pulled my hand free and looked at him calmly. "Martin, not remembering is exactly what made me realize how miserable I've been all these years. I'm not going back to that."With that, I turned and walked away.Behind me, Martin sobbed like his heart was breaking, but I didn't look back.Later, Martin and I met with our lawyers and signed an agreement that settled everything between us once and for all.The whole process was surprisingly calm. There were no arguments and no endless back-and-forth. It felt

Martin spent the rest of the day taking me around the city. We watched a movie, grabbed something to eat, went to an amusement park, and rode the Ferris wheel. It almost felt like a real date.As the Ferris wheel carried us higher, Martin gazed out over the city. "Willow, do you remember? Our first date was just like this."Then he turned to me. "Do you remember any of it?"There was something wistful in his eyes, along with a flicker of hope.I looked at him and told him the truth. "No."Since the surgery, most of those seven years had been a blank. There was so much I couldn't remember, and our first date was one of those things.Martin froze. That clearly wasn't the answer he'd been expecting."You don't remember? You're still mad at me, aren't you?"He seemed convinced I was only saying it to hurt him. His eyes reddened again."Willow, I know I was wrong. I-I'm sorry. I ignored you, and I failed you as a husband. But I know that now. Just give me one more chance, okay? Le

I agreed.Martin didn't say anything else. He simply turned and walked away, looking a little dejected.I watched him go and found myself wondering if he still had feelings for me.I shook my head.No way. If he really cared about me, he wouldn't have ignored me for seven years. He wouldn't have shut himself away in that monastery when I needed him most.Either way, the damage was done. Whatever had once existed between us was over.I didn't give it another thought. I left the house I'd once called home and went straight to Joan.Joan's family was in investment, so she had plenty of money and connections. The moment she heard what had happened, she offered to back me if I wanted to start my own company."Willow, you should've done this years ago! Why keep letting that opportunistic bastard take advantage of you? And don't worry about the money. If there's one thing I'm not short on, it's cash."Whatever you want to do, just say the word. I've got you!"Joan looked ready to go

Martin sounded exhausted, but I could still hear the hope in his voice. He really thought that if he gave me even the slightest opening, I'd come running back. In his mind, I was still the same Willow who had never been able to say no to him.Too bad he was wrong.Just then, the doorbell rang. I opened the door to find a realtor in a suit standing there with a young couple behind him."Ms. Quade? I'm with Wexton Realty. You contacted us about selling the house."I nodded and stepped aside. "Come in."Martin went white. He spun around and stared at me. "Wh-what are you doing?"His voice came out sharp with disbelief.I met his stare, my voice perfectly calm. "Exactly what it looks like. I'm selling the house."Martin staggered, nearly losing his balance. "Selling the house? A-are you insane? This is our home! You can't just sell it!"Watching him completely lose it almost made me laugh."Our home? Since when? My parents left this house to me. It was perfectly fine until you r

Martin's eyes widened. His lips trembled, and his face went pale, then livid. When he spoke, his voice came out high and sharp with disbelief. "You're seriously asking me for rent?"I shrugged. "What else? Did you think we were just playing house?"Martin's head snapped up, his eyes bloodshot. "When did you find out?"He sounded furious, as if I were the one who had betrayed him.I gave a mocking laugh. "Does it matter? Why do you care when I found out? Was I supposed to pretend I didn't know and wait until you and Evelyn actually crossed the line?"A sharp slap cracked through the room.Martin had hit me with all his strength. My cheek burned.Evelyn looked like she was about to laugh, but she quickly covered it with a look of concern and stepped forward."Willow, calm down. Martin only said that because he was angry. Don't take it to heart. You two have been married for seven years. Whatever's wrong, can't you just talk it out? Does it really have to come to this?"She reac
