Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Cutie Kitty
Watching Evelyn rub it in my face just how much Martin cared about her made me want to slap her.

Joan grabbed my shoulder before I could do anything. "Willow, don't. Just hang in there a little longer. Three years ago, your parents died in a car accident, and Quade Group fell into chaos.

"Then Martin shut himself away at the monastery and announced that he was washing his hands of everything. He didn't lift a finger to help you, and people at Quade Group took advantage of the situation to push you aside.

"If you fall out with Martin now, it'll only make it harder for you to take back what's rightfully yours."

That made me lose even more respect for Martin. If Joan knew what had happened, there was no way he didn't. He'd known I was struggling and still stood by and did nothing.

Either way, I didn't need his help. I was perfectly capable of making it on my own.

I cut Joan off and looked straight at Martin. "I don't care what's going on between you two. And just so we're clear, Mr. Gentry, I'm the one walking away from your company today."

I couldn't be bothered to stick around for his reaction. I grabbed Joan and headed for the door.

The moment we stepped outside, she pulled free. "Willow, have you lost your mind? Forget it. You don't remember anything, so there's no point trying to talk sense into you. I'll go talk to Martin.

"You two have been married for seven years. Surely he'll cut you some slack."

I frowned.

Apparently, I'd spent the past seven years letting people walk all over me even more than I'd realized.

I caught Joan by the arm. "Forget him. Come have a drink with me."

The second I mentioned alcohol, Joan froze and stared at me like I'd lost my mind. "Didn't you quit drinking seven years ago because Martin couldn't stand the smell of alcohol?

"You were so serious about it that you actually got into a fight with us. You even said you'd cut off anyone who ever brought up alcohol around you again."

The more she told me, the more ridiculous it sounded.

Whenever I was stressed or needed inspiration, I'd mix myself a few cocktails at home to unwind. I'd been doing that for more than a decade. And somehow, I'd given it all up for a man who didn't even love me.

Worse, I'd nearly ruined my friendship with Joan, someone I'd known my whole life, over it.

I really had been an idiot.

I pushed the thought aside and gave Joan's cheek a playful pinch. "Look at you making excuses. What, are you getting old? Afraid you can't keep up with me anymore?"

Joan's face immediately flushed. She whipped out her phone and started messaging everyone in our group chat.

"Just you wait. I'm getting everyone together tonight. We'll see how tough you are after a few drinks!"

Before long, a few of our closest friends had joined us. They all talked over one another, bombarding me with questions about what I'd been up to.

Eventually, the conversation turned to Martin.

"Joan said you're getting divorced?"

"Yeah. Didn't you used to say Martin was the love of your life and that you'd rather die than live without him?"

I didn't want them worrying about me, so I kept the memory loss to myself and just smiled. "I finally came to my senses. Come on, drink up!"

After a few drinks, everyone loosened up and started teasing me. From what they told me, Martin had always been ridiculously old-fashioned and more than a little controlling.

As soon as we got married, he laid down a whole list of rules. I wasn't allowed to drink. I had to be home by 10:00 pm. I wasn't allowed to check up on him, and his phone was completely off-limits.

After Evelyn's accident, he only got worse. He moved out of our home and into the monastery, then washed his hands of the company altogether.

Apparently, I'd been so worried about his health that I made herbal remedies for him myself and had them delivered every single day. And after seven years of doing that, I still hadn't seen him once.

The more I heard about the past, the more absurd it all sounded.

I remembered being talented and ambitious, determined to make something of myself after graduation. Yet somehow, I'd only ended up more miserable with each passing year.

Martin's smile only widened. "What am I trying to do? Isn't it obvious? I'm trying to win you back."He leaned closer, and I caught the faint scent of his cologne."Willow, you changed yourself for me once. Now it's my turn to change for you."Everyone around us fell silent. They stared at Martin in disbelief, their jaws practically dropping. This was Martin Gentry, the notoriously cold and intimidating CEO no one could ever get close to. Countless women had tried and failed, yet here he was, openly admitting that he wanted me back.It was almost impossible to believe.Everyone turned to me, waiting to see how I'd react. But I barely felt anything. If anything, I almost found the whole thing funny. The damage was already done. Even if Martin changed now, what difference would it make?"Martin, you don't have to do this. We're over. Just leave the past where it belongs."Martin didn't answer. He just kept drinking. Before long, he was so drunk he could barely stay on his feet.

I looked at Martin and spoke slowly and clearly. "I'm doing just fine the way I am."But Martin refused to believe me. "No! Willow, that's not true! You don't remember anything, so how can you possibly know if you're okay? You're only saying this because you're angry!"He clutched my hand, growing more desperate by the second. "You can't give up on treatment. You have to get your memories back!"The Ferris wheel slowly carried us back down until our cabin reached the ground.I pulled my hand free and looked at him calmly. "Martin, not remembering is exactly what made me realize how miserable I've been all these years. I'm not going back to that."With that, I turned and walked away.Behind me, Martin sobbed like his heart was breaking, but I didn't look back.Later, Martin and I met with our lawyers and signed an agreement that settled everything between us once and for all.The whole process was surprisingly calm. There were no arguments and no endless back-and-forth. It felt

Martin spent the rest of the day taking me around the city. We watched a movie, grabbed something to eat, went to an amusement park, and rode the Ferris wheel. It almost felt like a real date.As the Ferris wheel carried us higher, Martin gazed out over the city. "Willow, do you remember? Our first date was just like this."Then he turned to me. "Do you remember any of it?"There was something wistful in his eyes, along with a flicker of hope.I looked at him and told him the truth. "No."Since the surgery, most of those seven years had been a blank. There was so much I couldn't remember, and our first date was one of those things.Martin froze. That clearly wasn't the answer he'd been expecting."You don't remember? You're still mad at me, aren't you?"He seemed convinced I was only saying it to hurt him. His eyes reddened again."Willow, I know I was wrong. I-I'm sorry. I ignored you, and I failed you as a husband. But I know that now. Just give me one more chance, okay? Le

I agreed.Martin didn't say anything else. He simply turned and walked away, looking a little dejected.I watched him go and found myself wondering if he still had feelings for me.I shook my head.No way. If he really cared about me, he wouldn't have ignored me for seven years. He wouldn't have shut himself away in that monastery when I needed him most.Either way, the damage was done. Whatever had once existed between us was over.I didn't give it another thought. I left the house I'd once called home and went straight to Joan.Joan's family was in investment, so she had plenty of money and connections. The moment she heard what had happened, she offered to back me if I wanted to start my own company."Willow, you should've done this years ago! Why keep letting that opportunistic bastard take advantage of you? And don't worry about the money. If there's one thing I'm not short on, it's cash."Whatever you want to do, just say the word. I've got you!"Joan looked ready to go

Martin sounded exhausted, but I could still hear the hope in his voice. He really thought that if he gave me even the slightest opening, I'd come running back. In his mind, I was still the same Willow who had never been able to say no to him.Too bad he was wrong.Just then, the doorbell rang. I opened the door to find a realtor in a suit standing there with a young couple behind him."Ms. Quade? I'm with Wexton Realty. You contacted us about selling the house."I nodded and stepped aside. "Come in."Martin went white. He spun around and stared at me. "Wh-what are you doing?"His voice came out sharp with disbelief.I met his stare, my voice perfectly calm. "Exactly what it looks like. I'm selling the house."Martin staggered, nearly losing his balance. "Selling the house? A-are you insane? This is our home! You can't just sell it!"Watching him completely lose it almost made me laugh."Our home? Since when? My parents left this house to me. It was perfectly fine until you r

Martin's eyes widened. His lips trembled, and his face went pale, then livid. When he spoke, his voice came out high and sharp with disbelief. "You're seriously asking me for rent?"I shrugged. "What else? Did you think we were just playing house?"Martin's head snapped up, his eyes bloodshot. "When did you find out?"He sounded furious, as if I were the one who had betrayed him.I gave a mocking laugh. "Does it matter? Why do you care when I found out? Was I supposed to pretend I didn't know and wait until you and Evelyn actually crossed the line?"A sharp slap cracked through the room.Martin had hit me with all his strength. My cheek burned.Evelyn looked like she was about to laugh, but she quickly covered it with a look of concern and stepped forward."Willow, calm down. Martin only said that because he was angry. Don't take it to heart. You two have been married for seven years. Whatever's wrong, can't you just talk it out? Does it really have to come to this?"She reac
