Chapter 1

The moment my husband, Martin Gentry, suspended me, Joan Conway jumped in to defend me.

"Martin, the doctor said the surgery temporarily erased Willow's memories of the past seven years. She was just acting on impulse earlier, so please don't be mad at her."

Joan was my cousin and had been my best friend since childhood.

When I woke up with no memory of the past seven years, she was the one who picked me up from the hospital and brought me straight to the office.

What she didn't realize was that asking Martin for a divorce hadn't been an impulsive decision at all.

Ever since I woke up, I'd noticed more lines on my face than I remembered, and the date didn't match the year I remembered.

When I asked the doctor what had happened, he explained that the surgery to remove some of my brainstem tissue had caused a serious side effect.

I'd lost about seven years of memories. In my mind, I'd only just graduated from college.

The doctor offered to call my family. I had to admit, I was thrilled when I found out Martin was my husband. Back in college, he'd been the campus heartthrob, brilliant and admired by practically everyone.

But by the time my discharge paperwork was finished that morning, I already knew he didn't love me.

He didn't know I was allergic to peaches. Every piece of clothing and every pair of shoes he'd brought me was the wrong size. And when he filled out my discharge forms, he couldn't even remember my birthday.

Before the doctor could explain my memory loss to Martin, Martin rushed through the discharge paperwork, gave me the address of his company, and hurried off to another room to see a woman.

I had no idea who she was, but the way he looked at her was softer and more affectionate than he'd ever looked at me.

It wasn't until Joan mentioned her just now that I finally learned her name was Evelyn Stout. She was Martin's ex and had once worked as his assistant.

Whatever had happened during the seven years I couldn't remember, it clearly hadn't been anything good. If those memories were gone, I was perfectly happy to leave them that way.

My marriage was ending anyway.

Before I could say anything, Martin shot me a cold look.

"Do you think I'm an idiot, Willow? I never knew you could be this manipulative. Playing hard to get didn't work, so now you're faking amnesia to get everyone to feel sorry for you?"

Behind him, Evelyn was barely holding back a smug smile, but she quickly replaced it with a look of concern.

"Martin, Willow really does seem off today. I don't think she's faking it. What if she really did lose her memory? Maybe you should take her to the hospital and get her checked out.

"You've spent all these years at the monastery praying for me while Willow was left on her own. She's already suffered enough because of me, and the brainstem tissue I received came from her.

"If something really happened to her because of that, I don't know how I'd live with myself."

Watching Evelyn lay it on that thick almost made me lose my breakfast.

I'd assumed there had to be something special about her if Martin was still hung up on her after all these years.

As it turned out, she was just the type who acted sweet and innocent while carefully calculating every word that came out of her mouth.

Martin really did have terrible taste. If he couldn't see through an act that obvious, I had no idea how he'd ever managed to become a CEO.

Martin's smile only widened. "What am I trying to do? Isn't it obvious? I'm trying to win you back."He leaned closer, and I caught the faint scent of his cologne."Willow, you changed yourself for me once. Now it's my turn to change for you."Everyone around us fell silent. They stared at Martin in disbelief, their jaws practically dropping. This was Martin Gentry, the notoriously cold and intimidating CEO no one could ever get close to. Countless women had tried and failed, yet here he was, openly admitting that he wanted me back.It was almost impossible to believe.Everyone turned to me, waiting to see how I'd react. But I barely felt anything. If anything, I almost found the whole thing funny. The damage was already done. Even if Martin changed now, what difference would it make?"Martin, you don't have to do this. We're over. Just leave the past where it belongs."Martin didn't answer. He just kept drinking. Before long, he was so drunk he could barely stay on his feet.

I looked at Martin and spoke slowly and clearly. "I'm doing just fine the way I am."But Martin refused to believe me. "No! Willow, that's not true! You don't remember anything, so how can you possibly know if you're okay? You're only saying this because you're angry!"He clutched my hand, growing more desperate by the second. "You can't give up on treatment. You have to get your memories back!"The Ferris wheel slowly carried us back down until our cabin reached the ground.I pulled my hand free and looked at him calmly. "Martin, not remembering is exactly what made me realize how miserable I've been all these years. I'm not going back to that."With that, I turned and walked away.Behind me, Martin sobbed like his heart was breaking, but I didn't look back.Later, Martin and I met with our lawyers and signed an agreement that settled everything between us once and for all.The whole process was surprisingly calm. There were no arguments and no endless back-and-forth. It felt

Martin spent the rest of the day taking me around the city. We watched a movie, grabbed something to eat, went to an amusement park, and rode the Ferris wheel. It almost felt like a real date.As the Ferris wheel carried us higher, Martin gazed out over the city. "Willow, do you remember? Our first date was just like this."Then he turned to me. "Do you remember any of it?"There was something wistful in his eyes, along with a flicker of hope.I looked at him and told him the truth. "No."Since the surgery, most of those seven years had been a blank. There was so much I couldn't remember, and our first date was one of those things.Martin froze. That clearly wasn't the answer he'd been expecting."You don't remember? You're still mad at me, aren't you?"He seemed convinced I was only saying it to hurt him. His eyes reddened again."Willow, I know I was wrong. I-I'm sorry. I ignored you, and I failed you as a husband. But I know that now. Just give me one more chance, okay? Le

I agreed.Martin didn't say anything else. He simply turned and walked away, looking a little dejected.I watched him go and found myself wondering if he still had feelings for me.I shook my head.No way. If he really cared about me, he wouldn't have ignored me for seven years. He wouldn't have shut himself away in that monastery when I needed him most.Either way, the damage was done. Whatever had once existed between us was over.I didn't give it another thought. I left the house I'd once called home and went straight to Joan.Joan's family was in investment, so she had plenty of money and connections. The moment she heard what had happened, she offered to back me if I wanted to start my own company."Willow, you should've done this years ago! Why keep letting that opportunistic bastard take advantage of you? And don't worry about the money. If there's one thing I'm not short on, it's cash."Whatever you want to do, just say the word. I've got you!"Joan looked ready to go

Martin sounded exhausted, but I could still hear the hope in his voice. He really thought that if he gave me even the slightest opening, I'd come running back. In his mind, I was still the same Willow who had never been able to say no to him.Too bad he was wrong.Just then, the doorbell rang. I opened the door to find a realtor in a suit standing there with a young couple behind him."Ms. Quade? I'm with Wexton Realty. You contacted us about selling the house."I nodded and stepped aside. "Come in."Martin went white. He spun around and stared at me. "Wh-what are you doing?"His voice came out sharp with disbelief.I met his stare, my voice perfectly calm. "Exactly what it looks like. I'm selling the house."Martin staggered, nearly losing his balance. "Selling the house? A-are you insane? This is our home! You can't just sell it!"Watching him completely lose it almost made me laugh."Our home? Since when? My parents left this house to me. It was perfectly fine until you r

Martin's eyes widened. His lips trembled, and his face went pale, then livid. When he spoke, his voice came out high and sharp with disbelief. "You're seriously asking me for rent?"I shrugged. "What else? Did you think we were just playing house?"Martin's head snapped up, his eyes bloodshot. "When did you find out?"He sounded furious, as if I were the one who had betrayed him.I gave a mocking laugh. "Does it matter? Why do you care when I found out? Was I supposed to pretend I didn't know and wait until you and Evelyn actually crossed the line?"A sharp slap cracked through the room.Martin had hit me with all his strength. My cheek burned.Evelyn looked like she was about to laugh, but she quickly covered it with a look of concern and stepped forward."Willow, calm down. Martin only said that because he was angry. Don't take it to heart. You two have been married for seven years. Whatever's wrong, can't you just talk it out? Does it really have to come to this?"She reac
