Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Cutie Kitty
Still, I couldn't help feeling a little relieved.

Maybe losing those seven years of memories wasn't such a bad thing after all. It had taken seven years, but at least I could finally start living for myself again.

I pushed the thought aside and smiled. "Relax. I've already hired a realtor to sell the house. Once we divide the assets, I'll finally be free of that uptight, old-fashioned jerk. And then—"

A cold voice came from the doorway.

"Willow, say that again."

I turned around and froze.

Martin? What was he doing here? Didn't he hate the smell of smoke and alcohol?

"What do you want? Shouldn't you be off taking care of your precious Evelyn?"

To my surprise, Martin didn't get angry. He just stared at me for a long moment. "It's midnight. You promised you'd be home by 10:00 pm."

I scoffed. He had to be out of his mind.

"We're getting divorced. What makes you think you still get to tell me what to do?"

Martin didn't look surprised. He pulled a bank card from his bag and held it out to me. "Isn't this what you want? Money? How much is it this time? Three million dollars? Five million dollars?"

This time?

Those two words immediately caught my attention. From the way he said it, this clearly wasn't the first time we'd had this kind of argument.

My expression turned cold, and I slapped the card out of his hand. "I don't want your filthy money. You're not welcome here, so get lost and stop ruining our girls' night."

I turned away and ordered another cocktail. I didn't bother looking back at Martin. A moment later, the door slammed behind him.

As soon as he was gone, my friends crowded around me.

"Are you seriously the Willow we know? Since when do you stand up to Martin like that?"

"Seriously. You should've seen his face. Everyone in Amethyst City knows Martin Gentry never loses his cool, and you had him absolutely furious!"

I just smiled and picked up my drink. "What's the big deal? Come on, drink up!"

It wasn't until the next afternoon that I finally headed home. On the way, I glanced down at the marriage certificate in my hand and gave a bitter laugh.

That morning, my lawyer had rushed over with some unexpected news. The court had rejected my divorce filing.

At first, I thought there had to be something wrong with the paperwork. Then he told me the real reason.

Martin and I had never been legally married. Our marriage certificate was fake.

I couldn't remember how he'd fooled me back then or why he'd gone to so much trouble, but none of that mattered anymore.

I didn't want to be with him anyway. If anything, this saved me the trouble of getting divorced.

I was going home to pack, but not my things.

His.

My friends had reminded me the night before that when Martin and I first got together, I'd been so happy and so sure we'd be together forever that a prenup had never even crossed my mind.

I'd been expecting the asset split to be a nightmare, but Martin had been even more ruthless than I thought. He'd never even made our marriage legal, which meant the house was still mine.

He'd probably be spending the day with Evelyn, so I figured I might as well clear out all his things while he was gone. That way, I wouldn't have to deal with him coming back later and arguing over his stuff.

But the moment I opened the door, I stopped short.

Martin was slumped on the couch, dark circles under his eyes like he hadn't slept all night.

I was already bracing myself for another argument when he rubbed his temples.

"You're back. My head's killing me. Make me that herbal remedy you used to make."

That was when I noticed the empty liquor bottles scattered under the coffee table. I stared at them in surprise.

Hadn't Joan told me just last night that Martin never drank and could barely stand the smell of alcohol? So why had he suddenly drunk so much?

And I had no idea what herbal remedy he was talking about.

Martin's smile only widened. "What am I trying to do? Isn't it obvious? I'm trying to win you back."He leaned closer, and I caught the faint scent of his cologne."Willow, you changed yourself for me once. Now it's my turn to change for you."Everyone around us fell silent. They stared at Martin in disbelief, their jaws practically dropping. This was Martin Gentry, the notoriously cold and intimidating CEO no one could ever get close to. Countless women had tried and failed, yet here he was, openly admitting that he wanted me back.It was almost impossible to believe.Everyone turned to me, waiting to see how I'd react. But I barely felt anything. If anything, I almost found the whole thing funny. The damage was already done. Even if Martin changed now, what difference would it make?"Martin, you don't have to do this. We're over. Just leave the past where it belongs."Martin didn't answer. He just kept drinking. Before long, he was so drunk he could barely stay on his feet.

I looked at Martin and spoke slowly and clearly. "I'm doing just fine the way I am."But Martin refused to believe me. "No! Willow, that's not true! You don't remember anything, so how can you possibly know if you're okay? You're only saying this because you're angry!"He clutched my hand, growing more desperate by the second. "You can't give up on treatment. You have to get your memories back!"The Ferris wheel slowly carried us back down until our cabin reached the ground.I pulled my hand free and looked at him calmly. "Martin, not remembering is exactly what made me realize how miserable I've been all these years. I'm not going back to that."With that, I turned and walked away.Behind me, Martin sobbed like his heart was breaking, but I didn't look back.Later, Martin and I met with our lawyers and signed an agreement that settled everything between us once and for all.The whole process was surprisingly calm. There were no arguments and no endless back-and-forth. It felt

Martin spent the rest of the day taking me around the city. We watched a movie, grabbed something to eat, went to an amusement park, and rode the Ferris wheel. It almost felt like a real date.As the Ferris wheel carried us higher, Martin gazed out over the city. "Willow, do you remember? Our first date was just like this."Then he turned to me. "Do you remember any of it?"There was something wistful in his eyes, along with a flicker of hope.I looked at him and told him the truth. "No."Since the surgery, most of those seven years had been a blank. There was so much I couldn't remember, and our first date was one of those things.Martin froze. That clearly wasn't the answer he'd been expecting."You don't remember? You're still mad at me, aren't you?"He seemed convinced I was only saying it to hurt him. His eyes reddened again."Willow, I know I was wrong. I-I'm sorry. I ignored you, and I failed you as a husband. But I know that now. Just give me one more chance, okay? Le

I agreed.Martin didn't say anything else. He simply turned and walked away, looking a little dejected.I watched him go and found myself wondering if he still had feelings for me.I shook my head.No way. If he really cared about me, he wouldn't have ignored me for seven years. He wouldn't have shut himself away in that monastery when I needed him most.Either way, the damage was done. Whatever had once existed between us was over.I didn't give it another thought. I left the house I'd once called home and went straight to Joan.Joan's family was in investment, so she had plenty of money and connections. The moment she heard what had happened, she offered to back me if I wanted to start my own company."Willow, you should've done this years ago! Why keep letting that opportunistic bastard take advantage of you? And don't worry about the money. If there's one thing I'm not short on, it's cash."Whatever you want to do, just say the word. I've got you!"Joan looked ready to go

Martin sounded exhausted, but I could still hear the hope in his voice. He really thought that if he gave me even the slightest opening, I'd come running back. In his mind, I was still the same Willow who had never been able to say no to him.Too bad he was wrong.Just then, the doorbell rang. I opened the door to find a realtor in a suit standing there with a young couple behind him."Ms. Quade? I'm with Wexton Realty. You contacted us about selling the house."I nodded and stepped aside. "Come in."Martin went white. He spun around and stared at me. "Wh-what are you doing?"His voice came out sharp with disbelief.I met his stare, my voice perfectly calm. "Exactly what it looks like. I'm selling the house."Martin staggered, nearly losing his balance. "Selling the house? A-are you insane? This is our home! You can't just sell it!"Watching him completely lose it almost made me laugh."Our home? Since when? My parents left this house to me. It was perfectly fine until you r

Martin's eyes widened. His lips trembled, and his face went pale, then livid. When he spoke, his voice came out high and sharp with disbelief. "You're seriously asking me for rent?"I shrugged. "What else? Did you think we were just playing house?"Martin's head snapped up, his eyes bloodshot. "When did you find out?"He sounded furious, as if I were the one who had betrayed him.I gave a mocking laugh. "Does it matter? Why do you care when I found out? Was I supposed to pretend I didn't know and wait until you and Evelyn actually crossed the line?"A sharp slap cracked through the room.Martin had hit me with all his strength. My cheek burned.Evelyn looked like she was about to laugh, but she quickly covered it with a look of concern and stepped forward."Willow, calm down. Martin only said that because he was angry. Don't take it to heart. You two have been married for seven years. Whatever's wrong, can't you just talk it out? Does it really have to come to this?"She reac
