Chapter 6

ผู้เขียน: Cutie Kitty
Evelyn clearly wasn't done. She put on that same wounded, concerned look again.

"Willow, I know you hate me, but Martin only gets angry because he cares about you. You went too far today. That was your wedding ring. How could you just throw it away like it meant nothing?

"He's had enough pressure on him all these years with the company. Of course he's going to lose his temper sometimes. Can't you try to understand where he's coming from?"

If my friends hadn't told me the truth last night, I might've actually believed her.

Martin had spent the past seven years holed up at some monastery in the middle of nowhere while I handled every project and kept the company running.

What pressure had he possibly been under?

Before I could say anything, Evelyn suddenly grabbed my hand.

"Willow, this is all my fault. I'm sorry. Why don't we put the past behind us and start over? We can both help take some of the pressure off Martin and work together to grow the company."

I hadn't even had a chance to respond when Evelyn gave a short, humorless laugh. Then, without warning, she dropped to the floor with a cry of pain.

Martin froze before rushing over to help her up. The next second, he slapped me hard across the face.

"Willow, Evelyn was trying to make peace with you! Why did you push her? You know she just had surgery. Are you trying to kill her again?"

I was speechless. The way he was panicking over Evelyn, he really must have been drunk out of his mind.

Evelyn might have been frail, but she wasn't made of glass. There was no way one little push would send her sprawling like that.

"I didn't push her. She fell on her own."

"So now you're saying Evelyn risked her life just to frame you?"

Before Martin could keep laying into me, Evelyn grabbed his arm and gave him a sweet, understanding look.

"Martin, don't misunderstand. Willow would never do something like that. My blood sugar was acting up, that's all. It happened seven years ago, and it happened again just now. Please don't get mad at Willow because of me."

Watching Evelyn play the innocent victim made my stomach turn.

I might not remember what happened seven years ago, but I wasn't stupid. Maybe I'd fallen for her act back then, but I wasn't falling for it now.

I slapped Evelyn hard across the face. She was so stunned that she just stood there, staring at me.

Before Martin could turn on me, I gave a careless shrug. "See? I hit her that hard, and she didn't even fall. So how exactly could I have pushed her down without you noticing?"

Martin froze, and some of the drunken haze seemed to leave his eyes.

"Willow, you've lost your mind! No matter what happened, you had no right to hit someone who's still recovering from surgery! You think there's something going on between Evelyn and me?

"Fine. I'll give you what you want. I'm moving out right now, and I'll stay with Evelyn!"

He turned to leave, but I grabbed his arm. "Wait!"

Martin stopped, crossed his arms, and gave me a knowing smirk. "What, having second thoughts? Weren't you the one insisting I leave and demanding a divorce?

"I'll admit I haven't treated you very well these past seven years. But as long as you apologize to Evelyn, I'll forget everything that's happened these past few days. I'll even move back home.

"We've been married for seven years, after all. And haven't you always wanted a baby with me? If you behave yourself, I can give you that too—"

I grimaced and tossed the fake marriage certificate onto the table. "We're not even married. Why the hell would I have your baby? And you've got it all wrong.

"I'm not trying to stop you from leaving. You've been living in my house for seven years without paying a cent. Pay me what you owe me, then get out!"

Martin's smile only widened. "What am I trying to do? Isn't it obvious? I'm trying to win you back."He leaned closer, and I caught the faint scent of his cologne."Willow, you changed yourself for me once. Now it's my turn to change for you."Everyone around us fell silent. They stared at Martin in disbelief, their jaws practically dropping. This was Martin Gentry, the notoriously cold and intimidating CEO no one could ever get close to. Countless women had tried and failed, yet here he was, openly admitting that he wanted me back.It was almost impossible to believe.Everyone turned to me, waiting to see how I'd react. But I barely felt anything. If anything, I almost found the whole thing funny. The damage was already done. Even if Martin changed now, what difference would it make?"Martin, you don't have to do this. We're over. Just leave the past where it belongs."Martin didn't answer. He just kept drinking. Before long, he was so drunk he could barely stay on his feet.

I looked at Martin and spoke slowly and clearly. "I'm doing just fine the way I am."But Martin refused to believe me. "No! Willow, that's not true! You don't remember anything, so how can you possibly know if you're okay? You're only saying this because you're angry!"He clutched my hand, growing more desperate by the second. "You can't give up on treatment. You have to get your memories back!"The Ferris wheel slowly carried us back down until our cabin reached the ground.I pulled my hand free and looked at him calmly. "Martin, not remembering is exactly what made me realize how miserable I've been all these years. I'm not going back to that."With that, I turned and walked away.Behind me, Martin sobbed like his heart was breaking, but I didn't look back.Later, Martin and I met with our lawyers and signed an agreement that settled everything between us once and for all.The whole process was surprisingly calm. There were no arguments and no endless back-and-forth. It felt

Martin spent the rest of the day taking me around the city. We watched a movie, grabbed something to eat, went to an amusement park, and rode the Ferris wheel. It almost felt like a real date.As the Ferris wheel carried us higher, Martin gazed out over the city. "Willow, do you remember? Our first date was just like this."Then he turned to me. "Do you remember any of it?"There was something wistful in his eyes, along with a flicker of hope.I looked at him and told him the truth. "No."Since the surgery, most of those seven years had been a blank. There was so much I couldn't remember, and our first date was one of those things.Martin froze. That clearly wasn't the answer he'd been expecting."You don't remember? You're still mad at me, aren't you?"He seemed convinced I was only saying it to hurt him. His eyes reddened again."Willow, I know I was wrong. I-I'm sorry. I ignored you, and I failed you as a husband. But I know that now. Just give me one more chance, okay? Le

I agreed.Martin didn't say anything else. He simply turned and walked away, looking a little dejected.I watched him go and found myself wondering if he still had feelings for me.I shook my head.No way. If he really cared about me, he wouldn't have ignored me for seven years. He wouldn't have shut himself away in that monastery when I needed him most.Either way, the damage was done. Whatever had once existed between us was over.I didn't give it another thought. I left the house I'd once called home and went straight to Joan.Joan's family was in investment, so she had plenty of money and connections. The moment she heard what had happened, she offered to back me if I wanted to start my own company."Willow, you should've done this years ago! Why keep letting that opportunistic bastard take advantage of you? And don't worry about the money. If there's one thing I'm not short on, it's cash."Whatever you want to do, just say the word. I've got you!"Joan looked ready to go

Martin sounded exhausted, but I could still hear the hope in his voice. He really thought that if he gave me even the slightest opening, I'd come running back. In his mind, I was still the same Willow who had never been able to say no to him.Too bad he was wrong.Just then, the doorbell rang. I opened the door to find a realtor in a suit standing there with a young couple behind him."Ms. Quade? I'm with Wexton Realty. You contacted us about selling the house."I nodded and stepped aside. "Come in."Martin went white. He spun around and stared at me. "Wh-what are you doing?"His voice came out sharp with disbelief.I met his stare, my voice perfectly calm. "Exactly what it looks like. I'm selling the house."Martin staggered, nearly losing his balance. "Selling the house? A-are you insane? This is our home! You can't just sell it!"Watching him completely lose it almost made me laugh."Our home? Since when? My parents left this house to me. It was perfectly fine until you r

Martin's eyes widened. His lips trembled, and his face went pale, then livid. When he spoke, his voice came out high and sharp with disbelief. "You're seriously asking me for rent?"I shrugged. "What else? Did you think we were just playing house?"Martin's head snapped up, his eyes bloodshot. "When did you find out?"He sounded furious, as if I were the one who had betrayed him.I gave a mocking laugh. "Does it matter? Why do you care when I found out? Was I supposed to pretend I didn't know and wait until you and Evelyn actually crossed the line?"A sharp slap cracked through the room.Martin had hit me with all his strength. My cheek burned.Evelyn looked like she was about to laugh, but she quickly covered it with a look of concern and stepped forward."Willow, calm down. Martin only said that because he was angry. Don't take it to heart. You two have been married for seven years. Whatever's wrong, can't you just talk it out? Does it really have to come to this?"She reac
