Chapter 2

Author: Sharpie
No one ironed Ashton's suit, picked out his ties, or shined his shoes.

At 7:00 am, the master bedroom door swung open.

Ashton stepped out in his pajamas, his hair a messy tangle. The moment he saw the empty dining table, his expression darkened. "Where's breakfast?"

I finished the last sip of my milk and put the glass in the dishwasher. "I'm not hungry."

"I asked about my breakfast." His tone was the exact one he used with his employees.

Actually, no. He treated his employees with more courtesy than he ever showed me.

I wiped the corner of my mouth and said nothing.

Ashton stared at me for a few seconds, then slammed the bedroom door shut behind him.

Ten minutes later, he came out fully dressed with a briefcase in hand. As he passed my way, he paused.

He was probably waiting for me to rush over, straighten his tie, and slip a bottle of water into his bag just like I always did.

Instead, I sat on the couch and scrolled through my phone without even glancing up.

A quiet scoff sounded above me, laced with pure annoyance.

A second later, the front door was slammed shut with a thunderous bang.

I knew Ashton was furious.

If things went the way they usually did, I'd be getting the silent treatment for a long while.

But after chasing him for two years and catering to his every whim for eight, I decided that it was time to look out for myself.

After all, I had spent years shortchanging myself for him.

Back in college, Ashton was the golden boy of the finance department.

With his rich family, good looks, and top grades, he drew eyes wherever he went—mine included.

I still remembered him dominating the debate stage with effortless charisma.

I remembered him walking under the sycamore trees in his crisp white shirts.

I remembered the time he casually picked up a textbook I'd dropped, handing it back to me without a second glance before walking away.

That single moment hooked me, marking the beginning of a two-year pursuit.

I began waking up at 6:00 am every morning just to secure the seat right behind his usual spot in lecture halls.

Ashton loved black coffee, so I would line up at the cafe in front of the school gates 20 minutes before it opened.

I did it in the freezing winter, and I did it in the pouring rain.

Once, during a heavy snowstorm, the cafe was closed. I ran three blocks just to find another place that was open.

By the time I handed him the cup, the coffee was still hot, but my hands were completely numb.

Ashton took it, sipped it, and murmured, "Not bad."

Those two words kept me riding high for an entire week.

Later, I started organizing his club paperwork, printing his theses, and standing in line to submit his assignments.

He never said no, but he never reached out first either.

When I told my roommate I was pursuing him, she asked, "Is he actually into you?"

I thought about it for a long time before replying, "Well, he isn't rejecting me, so he must be."

Looking back, I was incredibly naive.

During graduation year, Ashton landed a management trainee spot at Holt Group, while three top-tier investment banks were fighting over my résumé.

I was supposed to go to Apex Corp. I had passed the interviews and signed the offer.

But then Ashton said just one thing to me. "Sylvia, come to Holt Group. I need someone I can actually trust by my side."

That was all it took. And so, I turned down Apex Corp.

My advisor slammed his hands on his desk in frustration, telling me that I was the biggest idiot he had ever taught.

But I didn't think I was an idiot back then.

At the time, hearing Ashton say he "needed me" felt like the ultimate romantic gesture.

Once I joined Holt Group, I was placed in the investment analysis department. Three months later, I was reassigned as Ashton's personal assistant.

He had signed the transfer order himself.

I saw it as a sign of trust, closeness, and proof that my two years of pursuing him had finally paid off.

In my first year as his assistant, I made his breakfast, managed his documents, and wrote his market analysis reports on the side.

He put his name on those reports, which I thought was only natural. I was just his assistant, so of course they went out under his name.

I continued, "If you had told me during our fourth year, I would have also stayed. Even in our sixth year, when your mom forced me to sign that agreement, if you had just told me not to sign it, I still would have stayed. But I won't anymore."Ashton's hands slipped from the steering wheel. He looked entirely deflated, as if something vital had been drained from him.I opened the door of a cab and slid inside. As the car pulled away, I watched through the rearview mirror. His sedan remained parked right there by the curb.Even after the cab turned the corner, that car hadn't moved an inch.…Three months later, I was working at the headquarters of Apex Corp's Elysian division.Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows on the 47th floor, the entire city skyline stretched out.I was sitting in my office—not a cubicle but a private office. The nameplate on the door read, "Sylvia Duncan, Partner."On my desk lay the first project I had secured. It was a cross-border merger with a targe

I froze when I heard that.Eve continued, "The night you brought Mr. Clark that chowder, I was the one who put the lunchbox the cleaning lady mentioned on his desk. But he didn't even look at it before telling me to take it away. I was frustrated, so I threw it in the trash."She lowered her head. "The cleaning lady assumed he had finished it and thrown it out, but it was never even opened."I stood there, a faint buzzing in my ears. "But you bragged about it in the office.""I did it on purpose."Eve looked up at me, her eyes brimming with tears. "Sylvia, I was just jealous of you. From my very first day at the company, everyone kept saying that Mr. Clark had a formidable woman by his side."They said you'd been with him for eight years, your work was flawless, and your position was completely unshakeable. I thought that if I could make you believe he liked me, you'd break down, make a mistake, and leave on your own."She sniffled. "But you never broke. You're so much stronger

I looked at Ashton and replied, "I know. But what does that have to do with me?"I stood up and continued, "Three years ago, I pulled seven all-nighters to finish that report. The night before the presentation, I was running a 104-degree fever. I was hooked up to an IV drip while finishing the slides."The next day, you stood on that stage in your custom suit, and everyone praised your professionalism, precision, and genius. Meanwhile, I was sitting in the audience, my fever still burning. You couldn't even bother to bring me a bottle of water."The entire office went so quiet that I could hear a pin drop. All eyes were on us.Ashton's Adam's apple bobbed heavily twice. "I'm sorry."The words seemed to take every ounce of strength he possessed.I looked at him.Eight years, and this was the very first time I had ever heard him apologize. It was incredibly ironic. This apology wasn't born out of genuine remorse. It was sparked by a 20-million-dollar liability."The raw data is

I set a glass of water down in front of Aileen. "Mrs. Clark, I'm leaving because I want to leave. Not to negotiate terms with anyone."She let out a sharp laugh. "Alright. Cut the act. I've met plenty of young ladies like you from small towns."She pulled a check from her bag and slid it onto the coffee table. "Here's ten thousand dollars. Take the money, sign a non-disclosure agreement, and make a clean break. Don't run around talking about your history with Ashton. It's embarrassing."I looked down at the check. Ten thousand dollars to buy out eight years of my youth.I pushed the check right back toward Aileen. "Mrs. Clark, during my sixth year here, you made me sign an agreement. It explicitly stated that if my relationship with Ashton ended, I had no right to seek financial compensation from the Clark family. I signed it. So, I don't want your money."But there was a clause in that agreement you might have forgotten. It also stated that the Clark family shall not interfere wi

Larry rushed over to my desk, dripping with sweat. "Sylvia, please, if you don't step in on this, nobody else can fix it."I pushed my handover documents to the side. "Fine. But on one condition.""Name it.""My name goes on the official project roster. Not as an assistant or a coordinator but as the lead analyst."Larry blinked in surprise, then nodded vigorously. "Consider it done. Honestly, it should have been that way all along."I spent the next two days rerunning the earn-out model, followed by an all-nighter restructuring the cross-shareholding strategy.By the third afternoon, the new proposal was handed over to the opposing legal team.Their lead attorney reviewed it, then took off his glasses and asked, "Who put this strategy together?"Larry pointed at me. "Sylvia Duncan, the lead analyst for our investment analysis department."The attorney looked me up and down, then nodded in approval. "Excellent work. This is a lot better than the stuff Mr. Clark brought to the

Among the two items, one was a partnership invitation from Apex Corp's Elysian division. The other was my resignation letter.I looked at Ashton and said casually, "I'm leaving."It took him a long time to snap out of his daze. His Adam's apple bobbed."Apex Corp?" His voice sounded raspy. "A partner position at the Elysian division?"I nodded. "The headhunter reached out to me three times after the Lansford Group merger went through."Ashton ran his fingers along the edge of the resignation letter, his fingertips turning pale."I'm not approving this." He pushed the letter back across the desk and continued, "Sylvia, you need to calm down.""I am calm. This is the calmest I've been in eight years."He stared at me, an unfamiliar storm brewing in the depths of his eyes. "If you want to leave, fine, but only after a proper handover. You know the post-merger integration for Lansford Group better than anyone. Walking out right now is completely irresponsible."I smiled. "You can
