Chapter 1

Sharpie
A flash of irritation crossed Ashton Clark's eyes. "Sylvia, enough already. Bringing this junk to the office only disrupts my work."

In the past, those words would make me bow my head and apologize instantly.

I would have carefully set the chowder down, then retreated to the corner to wait for him to finish it.

But that day, I just stood there and stared at the elegant lunchbox sitting in the trash cart.

It was pink, adorned with floral prints and a bow. It was clearly made with love.

The cleaning lady sighed and pushed her cart away. Before she left, she shot me a look filled with pure pity.

"Sylvia, what are you daydreaming about?"

Ashton finally looked up at me. But it wasn't out of concern. It was out of sheer impatience.

I twisted the cap tight on my thermos and turned toward the door.

"Sylvia Duncan." His voice carried a sharp edge of warning.

This trick used to work every single time.

I would stop, turn around, smile, and say, "Alright, alright, get back to work."

But that day, I didn't stop. Once I reached my desk, I unplugged my flash drive, shut down my computer, and clocked out before heading to the elevator.

Just then, my phone buzzed. It was a text from Ashton.

"Come back and clean up my desk. On your way out, print the materials for tomorrow's meeting."

After reading it, I locked my screen.

The night wind blew hard as I stepped out of the office building.

As I waited at the crosswalk for the traffic light, I opened WhatsApp.

Next to the name "Ashton" was a bracketed note—"Restock his stomach medicine on Wednesdays".

I deleted the note and unpinned his chat.

Once it was done, my phone felt lighter in my hand.

When I got back to our shared apartment, the living room was pitch black.

I walked straight to the guest bedroom and locked the door behind me.

I used to sleep in the master bedroom, warming up the sheets before Ashton got home.

When he ran late, I would fill a hot water bottle and place it on his side of the bed.

When he was slow to text back, I checked my phone every ten minutes.

That night, I closed my eyes within three minutes of lying down. I didn't wait for his messages or set alarms to remind myself to make him breakfast.

I slept incredibly soundly that night.

At 2:00 am, my phone lit up repeatedly. But I just rolled over and ignored it.

The alarm went off at 6:15 am.

In the past, I would have already been in the kitchen, making him sandwiches.

Whole-wheat bread, lettuce, a fried egg, low-fat cheese, and ham, seared until the edges were just slightly crispy.

Ashton had eaten them for eight years without offering a single compliment, but if they were ever a fraction too salty, he would be in a foul mood for the entire day.

That day, I warmed up a glass of milk and sat at the dining table, sipping it slowly.

I continued, "If you had told me during our fourth year, I would have also stayed. Even in our sixth year, when your mom forced me to sign that agreement, if you had just told me not to sign it, I still would have stayed. But I won't anymore."Ashton's hands slipped from the steering wheel. He looked entirely deflated, as if something vital had been drained from him.I opened the door of a cab and slid inside. As the car pulled away, I watched through the rearview mirror. His sedan remained parked right there by the curb.Even after the cab turned the corner, that car hadn't moved an inch.…Three months later, I was working at the headquarters of Apex Corp's Elysian division.Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows on the 47th floor, the entire city skyline stretched out.I was sitting in my office—not a cubicle but a private office. The nameplate on the door read, "Sylvia Duncan, Partner."On my desk lay the first project I had secured. It was a cross-border merger with a targe

I froze when I heard that.Eve continued, "The night you brought Mr. Clark that chowder, I was the one who put the lunchbox the cleaning lady mentioned on his desk. But he didn't even look at it before telling me to take it away. I was frustrated, so I threw it in the trash."She lowered her head. "The cleaning lady assumed he had finished it and thrown it out, but it was never even opened."I stood there, a faint buzzing in my ears. "But you bragged about it in the office.""I did it on purpose."Eve looked up at me, her eyes brimming with tears. "Sylvia, I was just jealous of you. From my very first day at the company, everyone kept saying that Mr. Clark had a formidable woman by his side."They said you'd been with him for eight years, your work was flawless, and your position was completely unshakeable. I thought that if I could make you believe he liked me, you'd break down, make a mistake, and leave on your own."She sniffled. "But you never broke. You're so much stronger

I looked at Ashton and replied, "I know. But what does that have to do with me?"I stood up and continued, "Three years ago, I pulled seven all-nighters to finish that report. The night before the presentation, I was running a 104-degree fever. I was hooked up to an IV drip while finishing the slides."The next day, you stood on that stage in your custom suit, and everyone praised your professionalism, precision, and genius. Meanwhile, I was sitting in the audience, my fever still burning. You couldn't even bother to bring me a bottle of water."The entire office went so quiet that I could hear a pin drop. All eyes were on us.Ashton's Adam's apple bobbed heavily twice. "I'm sorry."The words seemed to take every ounce of strength he possessed.I looked at him.Eight years, and this was the very first time I had ever heard him apologize. It was incredibly ironic. This apology wasn't born out of genuine remorse. It was sparked by a 20-million-dollar liability."The raw data is

I set a glass of water down in front of Aileen. "Mrs. Clark, I'm leaving because I want to leave. Not to negotiate terms with anyone."She let out a sharp laugh. "Alright. Cut the act. I've met plenty of young ladies like you from small towns."She pulled a check from her bag and slid it onto the coffee table. "Here's ten thousand dollars. Take the money, sign a non-disclosure agreement, and make a clean break. Don't run around talking about your history with Ashton. It's embarrassing."I looked down at the check. Ten thousand dollars to buy out eight years of my youth.I pushed the check right back toward Aileen. "Mrs. Clark, during my sixth year here, you made me sign an agreement. It explicitly stated that if my relationship with Ashton ended, I had no right to seek financial compensation from the Clark family. I signed it. So, I don't want your money."But there was a clause in that agreement you might have forgotten. It also stated that the Clark family shall not interfere wi

Larry rushed over to my desk, dripping with sweat. "Sylvia, please, if you don't step in on this, nobody else can fix it."I pushed my handover documents to the side. "Fine. But on one condition.""Name it.""My name goes on the official project roster. Not as an assistant or a coordinator but as the lead analyst."Larry blinked in surprise, then nodded vigorously. "Consider it done. Honestly, it should have been that way all along."I spent the next two days rerunning the earn-out model, followed by an all-nighter restructuring the cross-shareholding strategy.By the third afternoon, the new proposal was handed over to the opposing legal team.Their lead attorney reviewed it, then took off his glasses and asked, "Who put this strategy together?"Larry pointed at me. "Sylvia Duncan, the lead analyst for our investment analysis department."The attorney looked me up and down, then nodded in approval. "Excellent work. This is a lot better than the stuff Mr. Clark brought to the

Among the two items, one was a partnership invitation from Apex Corp's Elysian division. The other was my resignation letter.I looked at Ashton and said casually, "I'm leaving."It took him a long time to snap out of his daze. His Adam's apple bobbed."Apex Corp?" His voice sounded raspy. "A partner position at the Elysian division?"I nodded. "The headhunter reached out to me three times after the Lansford Group merger went through."Ashton ran his fingers along the edge of the resignation letter, his fingertips turning pale."I'm not approving this." He pushed the letter back across the desk and continued, "Sylvia, you need to calm down.""I am calm. This is the calmest I've been in eight years."He stared at me, an unfamiliar storm brewing in the depths of his eyes. "If you want to leave, fine, but only after a proper handover. You know the post-merger integration for Lansford Group better than anyone. Walking out right now is completely irresponsible."I smiled. "You can
