Chapter 1

"How could you do this? Aren't you afraid that Luna Diana will notice?"

There was a long moment of silence before Nate Hyland replied coolly, "She won't find out."

"Why are you so sure?" his Beta asks.

"She depends on me completely." He sounded so sure of himself as he said that without hesitation. "She'll believe whatever I tell her."

His Beta went silent for a few seconds before lowering his voice and saying, "Then I hope you won't live to regret it."

Nate let out a light and relaxed chuckle, like there was nothing to worry about. "That day will never come."

The truth was unimaginably cruel.

I stood outside the meeting room with my nails digging so hard into my palm that they drew blood.

But at that moment, I didn't feel a thing.

I had come to bring Nate his cloak. The northern winds had turned bitter these past few days, and I didn't want him catching a cold while patrolling the territory.

Now, it felt like a wolf's claw had torn straight through my chest, and the freezing wind was slicing through the raw wound.

My wolf howled in my mind, feeling my pain.

I staggered back to the villa we shared and collapsed onto the rug before the fireplace. I curled up tightly and hugged myself as my whole body shook. The tears just wouldn't stop.

Suddenly, the door opened.

Nate was back.

His heavy boots clomped on the rug and drew closer to me. Soon, he was crouched over me.

His voice was low and gentle as he spoke, full of the usual warmth and concern I'd grown used to.

"Why didn't you ask the maids to light the fire? The butler said you haven't eaten today. He also said you didn't look too well," Nate said.

He reached out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear, frowning worriedly. "Tell me what's wrong, Diana."

Then, he took my hand in his. It was just as warm as always.

He added, "You need to eat something. Our pup is counting on you for nourishment."

I looked up at him. The tender expression he showed on his face was flawless.

So this was how convincing an Alpha's love could look, even when it was all an act.

Four years ago, my fated mate, Alex Burke, and my younger sister, Rose Roth, were caught kissing during my marking ceremony. My parents forced me to step aside. They said Rose and I shared the same blood, and that it wasn't worth causing a rift over a single male werewolf.

They publicly claimed that the invitations they had sent out contained a mistake. They further clarified that the marking ceremony was actually for Rose.

As I was drowning in humiliation, Nate stepped out and took my hand. Without hesitation, he marked me by biting down on my neck in front of everyone.

I once believed he was my savior who rescued me from shame and scorn.

I had a mind for business since I was young. Actually, I was the secret leader behind the largest merchant guild in the South.

After marrying Nate, I gave it all up. I quit the guild and devoted myself to supporting him as his Luna. I worked hard to build up our pack.

While using my knowledge of the southern tribes and their resources, I helped him strategize and plan. In just a few years, I helped him transform a collapsing minor pack into a powerful rising force in the South.

And this year, we finally conceived our heir through IVF. Everything was falling into place.

Nate had held me close and said the pup was a gift from the Moon Goddess. The love in his eyes made me willing to give him everything—my body and my soul—for him and our pup.

But now, I finally understood that it had all been a carefully woven lie.

If he could pretend to be so loving, then why couldn't I?

I closed my eyes. When I opened them again, they mirrored the same warmth he showed me.

I said, "I'm fine. I'm just a bit tired."

My voice was soft and sweet, even sounding a little playful. It betrayed none of what I truly felt inside.

Nate visibly relaxed as he patted the back of my hand. "That's good. I'll have the butler bring in someone to give you a massage."

In my mind, I scoffed and thought, "Alright, then. My wolf and I will keep up the act for three more days. In three more days, this ends for good!"

Nate tried to say something else, but Rose cut him off indignantly, "You're protecting her now?"Her eyes were bloodshot as she glared at Nate, her face contorted with utter hate. "You were always on my side! You said you'd help me! What changed?"Nate let out a bitter smile, his voice thick with pain. "Rose… I've been wrong all these years. Why can't you just let go?""Let go?" Rose laughed, manic and sharp. "Why should I let go? I only did what you did first! You lied to her and used her for my sake. And now I'm the one who's gone too far?"Her gaze turned increasingly mad as she sneered, "Are you regretting it now? That's too bad. Diana doesn't want you anymore! She's long done with you!"A flicker of agony crossed Nate's face, his pupils constricted like he'd just been dealt the final blow. He understood far too late how foolish and disgraceful his choices had been. However, I no longer cared about anything that had to do with them.I looked at Nate and said calmly, "The amb

I expected Rose to have learned her lesson after all that. Yet, she took things even further. One day, Lara sent me a link and said with disgust, "Look at this. She really has no shame."I looked down at my phone screen. It was a viral forum post with a bolded title, "She Took Everything From Me Since We Were Pups!"In the post, Rose spun a tale of woe and victimhood. She claimed I had bullied her as we grew up, accusing me of using my status as the eldest daughter to bully her and take away all the good things for myself. She went on to say that I was calculating and often put on a gentle front while forcing her to back down behind the scenes. Rose even said I'd stolen her fated mate by coercing our parents. She then accused me of leveraging my rediscovered royal identity to retaliate, causing her to be rejected by her mate and pack, thereby effectively ruining her reputation and life. She coated every word of her sob story with vicious accusations, twisting everything around

Of course, Rose's pup wasn't hers at all.No one knew where she had found that pup, but she tried to pass it off as her own… until the test results exposed everything. She and the pup were thrown out of the pack mercilessly without even a strip of jerky.Once the pride of her family and the darling of the pack, Rose didn't even have a place to sleep now. She stumbled back to the Roth residence pitifully with reddened eyes and was on the verge of breaking down. As soon as she pushed the door open, she cried out, "Dad! Mom! You have to help me!"However, she was met with heavy silence.Inside, Charlie and Elle sat stiffly on the stone bench, their faces grim. The home that was once filled with flowers and herbs now felt colder than midwinter.Charlie held a snapped branch in his hand, his eyes dark and terrifying. Elle looked exhausted and furious. It seemed as though she'd aged a decade overnight.Rose felt that something was off. Nevertheless, she rushed forward and whined, "D

Rose's face was drained of color, and her lips trembled uncontrollably. She opened her mouth, wanting to deny it.However, her in-laws weren't fools. They had already sensed something was wrong. Her strange behavior and my pointed remark had already planted a seed of doubt in their minds.Jess spoke up slowly with a frown, her voice heavy with suspicion. "Rose… Is that pup really yours?""Of course it is! How could you even ask me that?" Rose's voice cracked with panic. She clutched the pup in her arms tightly, holding on to it as if it might be snatched away the moment she loosened her grip. She was too nervous and defensive, which only made things look worse.Michael's expression turned cold and grim. His tone left no room for argument. "We'll run a blood test tomorrow."Rose's legs buckled slightly. Her face was now ashen. At last, Nate spoke. He had stood off to the side all this time, his expression shifting constantly. His brows were tightly knitted, as though he was only

I had barely taken a few steps when a tight, unforgiving hand clamped down hard on my wrist.A familiar, shrill voice pierced through the air.It was Mom. Her voice was filled with white-hot rage as she scolded, "You cursed wretch! You couldn't even keep your own pup, and now you're here to ruin Rose's moment? She finally gave her husband a pup, and you show up today of all days to stir up trouble? You're vile and vicious!"We already severed our ties and banished you from this family! And you still have the nerve to come back and embarrass us in public, you bitch?"The more she shouted, the more venomous her words became. Her voice tore through the entire banquet hall, and all conversation ceased as every guest turned to stare. The atmosphere became tense.Nate stepped forward, too, with a slight frown. "Diana, that's enough. Stop making a scene," he warned in a low tone.I looked at him frostily. Who was he trying to quiet? Was this his way of telling me to stay silent? T

In the weeks that followed, I recovered quickly both physically and mentally. The official decree to break the mate bond came through, and it was soon done—Nate and I were no longer bound.I didn't feel anything in particular. It was like waking from a nightmare that had dragged on too long. My mind was clear, and my heart was finally still.I was really, truly free now. After that, I headed straight for the largest branch of the Resource Alliance in the northern region. This time, I wasn't anyone's mate. I wasn't the daughter of the Roth family. I wasn't the Luna who looked glamorous but was always treated as disposable.I was just myself. I was going to carve my own path in this werewolf world with my own claws and on my own terms. As I stepped into the towering building, a graceful, poised she-wolf in an elegant forest-green formal dress caught my eye from across the lobby. She looked at me and froze for a moment. Then, her gaze softened with something that seemed like a se
