Chapter 1

Author: Perfect Timing
At first, I did not understand why my boyfriend’s best friend, Makayla Jaycox, hated me so much.

I finally learned the answer three months after my death.

She went to the psychiatric hospital every day to fawn over the person who had killed me.

She constantly urged him to kidnap my parents.

My parents were beaten bloody, and all of their limbs were broken.

She merely watched coldly and said cruelly, “I told them to change their majors to get into elite universities because I wanted fewer competitors. But that trash Sylvia had to go and ruin everything!

“She got what she deserved. I heard you two still want to fight for her case. Don’t even think about it! Today, I’ll send you two old geezers straight to hell!”

My parents let out heart-wrenching screams as they were drenched in gasoline.

Flames consumed them while Makayla laughed maniacally.

She clapped and cheered at the sight.

She broadcast herself playing the role of a Good Samaritan, pretending she had coincidentally shown up and helped put out the blaze.

My soul witnessed all of this. I cried out in agony, but it was utterly futile.

The next second, a familiar accusatory voice rang in my ears.

“Sylvia, can you just mind your own business? My intel is correct. Who do you think you are to stop everyone from changing their universities and majors?”

I opened my eyes and looked at Makayla. She looked impatient.

I was somewhat in a daze.

“My dad’s the head of the State Department of Education. He told me that a bunch of elite schools didn’t fill their spots this year, and there are tons of openings. If we don’t switch our options now, it’ll be too late!

“I’m clearly doing this for everyone’s good. Why shouldn’t we be allowed to change our majors if there’s a real chance to get into an elite university with a lower score?”

“Sylvia, don’t be selfish,” my boyfriend, Clement Gale, said resentfully with a frown.

“Sylvia, look, we put up with you being a control freak most of the time. We even give you some leeway because you’re the class president.

“But do you seriously not get how huge this application decision is? What gives you the right to block us from a better future?”

A better future? Yeah right.

College application was already a brutal competition. It was survival of the fittest, but choosing a major was no less cutthroat.

We came from a small town where there were not many good local universities. Most of my classmates were applying to universities out of state.

Those out-of-state universities only had a limited number of spots for non-residents.

If we aimed too high without a safety net, we could easily end up with no acceptances at all, or we might have to settle for a community college.

In the past, I tried desperately to dissuade everyone because I did not want them to take that risk. I never expected that my entire family would end up dying horribly because of it.

Seeing that I was silent, Makayla became impatient. She pointed at the clock and shouted, “The deadline is around the corner. If we don’t switch now, the chance to sneak into a top university with a lower score will be gone for good!

“Don’t you all want to shoot your shot? Don’t you want to get into an elite university and make your families proud?”

At that moment, a tall figure stepped forward and shoved me hard.

He was none other than Kendrick Ziegler, the person who killed me in the past.

His face was chubby and greasy, and he sprayed spittle as he jabbed a finger at my nose and hurled insults at me.

“You trash! I see exactly what you’re doing! You’re scared that someone’s going to get into a better university than you, so you’re trying to sabotage us!

“We can list up to twenty schools on our application this year. There’s no way I’m not getting into at least one of them!

“High school’s over. Quit acting like you’re still in charge!”

Watching Kendrick act as if he were destined for greatness, I clenched my fists so hard that my nails dug into my palms.

In the past, he convinced himself that despite his very low SAT scores, he could still sneak into the elite Harlad University.

In the end, he barely managed to get into a community college.

He blamed me for all of it.

He let Makayla manipulate him and killed me and my parents.

Then, he used his bipolar diagnosis to evade the law.

This time, I had no intention to stop him from walking straight into his own ruin.

I looked around and was met with nothing but venomous glares from every single person there.

My heart ached, but I forced out a bright smile and said, “You know what? You’re right! Since everyone wants to take a risk, go ahead and change your universities and majors.”

The police restrained everyone who was involved in the fight and said, “How dare you start a brawl in broad daylight?! You haven’t got respect for the law, have you?”The other students refused to back down. They snapped, “She got our whole class rejected from elite universities. What does it matter if we beat her to death?! It’s what she deserves!”“Good thing you’re here! Arrest that trash and throw her in jail so she can’t ruin anyone else’s life!”Clement, meanwhile, rushed up to Albert with tears and snot streaming down his face.“Mr. Jaycox, it’s me, Clem! You promised us that if we changed our universities and majors, we’d all get in. “Now that this has happened, how can you just stand there and do nothing?!”Albert pushed him away in bewilderment, waving his hands frantically to keep Clement at a distance.“Young man, what are you talking about? When did I ever say that? “Besides, I don’t even know you. What on earth are you going on about?”Clement was angry and em

Makayla cried bitterly in front of the camera. “Because Sylvia filed complaints, a lot of top university administrators were afraid to go ahead with it. That’s why they didn’t admit you.“If she hadn’t been so jealous and meddlesome just because our whole class had a chance of getting into elite universities, we wouldn’t have been rejected by those universities. Now we’re stuck taking a gap year!“I’m truly sorry. I never thought things would turn out like this. I just wanted everyone to get into a good university. But Sylvia ruined everything! I’m speaking up now to clear my name. I hope you all understand.”The crowd, which had just been furious moments ago, seemed to be convinced by her words. They turned their anger back on me.“Exactly! I remember that letter got published in the paper less than a day after we submitted our applications. Who else could it have been if not Sylvia?”“The backlash was huge back then! There’s no way it didn’t hurt our chances of getting into

The person who worked at the post office sweated nervously. After carefully cross-referencing the list one by one, he said in a serious tone, “I’m sorry, but we definitely didn’t receive any letters for you.“Are you sure you’re supposed to receive a letter?”Everyone who was there snapped when they heard this. They quickly opened the application system to check their status.“No, that can’t be right! Why does it say I didn’t get in anywhere?”“How is that possible? Makayla said as long as we filled it out, we’d get in! She told us to wait and not check the system too soon!”Clement’s legs went limp. “This is it! My dad’s going to kill me. This is all your fault! You guys are the ones who kept pressuring me to change my universities and majors!”“What do you mean ‘pressuring’ you? We only changed it because Mr. Reid and Makayla guaranteed it. If anyone’s to blame, it’s them!”Watching his dream of enrolling in an elite university fall apart, Kendrick was so furious that he

Once we got the application results, netizens quickly sided with those who had taken the risk of applying to elite universities. They were all shocked. [Wait, you can actually get in on a fluke? If even elite universities can’t fill their spots, never mind other universities!][Thank goodness I never talked badly about those kids who changed their universities and majors. I didn’t think they’d actually get into top universities with low scores.][I bet the person who wrote that original article was just jealous. They couldn’t get into a top university themselves, so they had to stir up trouble behind the scenes.]I read the comments indifferently. I knew from the past that this so-called fluke admission into an elite university was practically impossible. The student who got into the elite university with an 1,100 SAT score faced severe backlash after I died.Due to the gap in scores, countless people on campus forums accused him of not deserving his spot. The university al

“Fine! We’re done!” I said and ignored Clement as I ran straight home.I told my parents what had happened. My father used to work as a reporter. He immediately noticed something unusual about the situation. He said reassuringly, “Syl, you did the right thing. In life, you need to stay grounded. Relying on luck will only backfire.“I’ll send an anonymous letter to the newspaper to blow the whistle on this thing. They’ll investigate this and figure out what kind of shady business is really going on.”My parents’ faces were pale with fear and anger. They had thought that once the SAT was over, they could finally relax. They never imagined someone would try to tamper with the application process.I had been one step away from ending up with nowhere to go for further studies.Soon after, my father’s anonymous letter was published in the local newspaper. The article did not state it directly, but everyone knew what it was hinting at. It caused a huge backlash. Many netizens spoke

I was overwhelmed by the chaos.Without wasting any time, I urgently snatched the keyboard from Makayla’s hand and tried to use the last minute to restore my applications.Just then, I recalled what had happened earlier, and it hit me.Makayla had deleted my applications, but she never clicked save. That meant nothing had actually changed. My hands finally stopped shaking. I felt relief and let out a long exhale.Once I caught my breath, I felt a surge of pure hatred and fury.In the past, she had tampered with my applications behind my back. She had convinced Clement to log into my account and secretly changed my options on the deadline day.Her reason was simple. She said my first choice overlapped with hers, and she was afraid I would take her spot.At the time, I had no idea what had happened.I had waited eagerly for my acceptance letter. But I received a brochure from a community college instead.I broke down in tears. My parents launched an investigation and event
