Chapter 2

Author: Nora Nolan
The next morning, I was woken by the sound of Ryan's voice, deliberately hushed.

He was standing out on the balcony, phone pressed to his ear. "Did it chip? Is it bad? The bracelet is not important. You're fine, and that's what matters. Don't cry. I'm on my way over right now."

His voice was laced with an unvarnished anxiety and tenderness he never used with me anymore.

I lay still in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.

Five minutes later, the bedroom door clicked open. Seeing my eyes open, Ryan paused for a fraction of a second before quickly walking over to the bed.

"Did I wake you?" He sat on the edge of the mattress, reaching out a hand to touch my face.

I tilted my head away from his hand and sat up. "Are you going out?"

His hand froze awkwardly midair before he smoothly withdrew it.

"Sabine tried on the bracelet this morning and accidentally knocked it against the sink. She's terrified she ruined it and won't stop crying," he explained, already stripping off his sleep shirt and pulling on a crisp button-down. "I need to go check on her. She lives alone, and I don't feel right leaving her like this."

I watched him knot his tie with practiced ease. "I'll skip breakfast. Make yourself something to eat."

"Ryan..."

"Yeah?" He didn't turn around, his eyes locked on the mirror as he adjusted his collar.

"I want to go look at that development in the south suburbs today."

His fingers stilled against his collar.

We had picked out that property six months ago. He had told me it would be our future home, promising that as soon as his 30th birthday passed, we would go put down the down payment.

He turned around, looking uncomfortable. "It can wait. Sabine is an emotional wreck right now. I need to go and calm her down first. Once things settle, I'll take you to look at a place in a much better neighborhood. The commute from the south suburbs isn't great anyway."

I looked back at him, my gaze entirely calm. "Okay."

He visibly relaxed, stepping forward to drop a kiss on my forehead. "I'll be back soon."

The front door clicked shut. The apartment plummeted back into silence.

I got up and walked into the kitchen. Opening the refrigerator, I found it packed to the brim with fresh ingredients. I pulled out two eggs and a carton of milk.

While the eggs sizzled in the pan, old memories flashed uncontrollably behind my eyes.

Back when we lived in that cramped, drafty rental, Ryan used to wake up half an hour before me every single day just to surprise me with different breakfasts.

Once, I had casually mentioned craving the beef patties from the west side of the city. He had unchained a Citi Bike and ridden through a torrential downpour for 30 minutes just to get them for me.

When he finally burst back through the door, he looked like a drowned rat, but the beef patties were still piping hot.

"No matter the weather, if you want it, I'll bring it back," he had said warmly.

And now? Even honoring his promise to look at our future home had become an inconvenience he could easily brush off.

I slid the fried eggs onto a plate. As I poured the milk, my hand slipped, sending a white splash across the counter. I grabbed a dishcloth to wipe it up, but my elbow caught a bottle sitting near the edge.

It was a bottle of seafood sauce. The dark brown liquid oozed across the marble, releasing a pungent fishy odor into the air. The moment the scent hit my nose, my stomach twisted violently.

I was severely allergic to seafood.

Ryan had bought that sauce just two days ago because Sabine had mentioned she was craving seafood pasta. He had completely forgotten that even the concentrated smell of seafood was enough to make me break out in hives.

I threw the dishcloth into the trash, shoving the plate of eggs and the entire bottle of sauce right in after it. Then, I walked back into the bedroom, dragged three large cardboard boxes out from under the bed, and began to pack.

The truth was, very little in this apartment actually belonged to me. Just a few everyday outfits, a handful of my academic books, and my laptop...

Everything else had been bought by Ryan. Those handbags and jewelry were expensive, but I didn't like them. He always dressed me according to Sabine's tastes.

"Pink looks incredible on Sabine. You should try it, too."

"Sabine said this perfume smells amazing, so I bought a bottle for you."

I gathered every single one of those items, packed them away, and stacked the boxes neatly in the very back corner of the walk-in closet.

I flipped through the journal casually. The first entry was dated the day I flew out of the country.[Eliza is gone. Ryan didn't go back to the States.Instead, he holed up in a hotel directly across the street from my apartment, lingering on the perimeter of my life like a stubborn ghost.Every morning when I left for the studio, he'd stand on the street corner, holding a warm croissant from my favorite bakery. He never dared to approach me. He just watched from a distance with eyes that were desperate and pleading. One afternoon, a torrential downpour hit Phaelis. I hadn't brought an umbrella, so I stood under the awning of the studio waiting for the storm to pass.A black car pulled up to the curb, and Ryan stepped out under a large black umbrella, walking briskly toward me. One side of his shoulder was already drenched."Eliza, it's pouring," he said hesitantly. "Let me give you a ride home."He tilted the umbrella toward me, but I refused flatly, "No need. I've called a ride.""It can't navigate this narrow alleyway," he argued anxiously. "It isn't the time to throw a tantrum. What if you

I stared down at the vibrant green stone.Once, I had stupidly believed that slipping that piece of bracelet onto my wrist would mean finally securing his unconditional love and validation. Now, it looked like nothing but an invisible shackle."Sabine already wore that bracelet," I said evenly. He froze, unsure how to respond."I don't want something another woman has already put on. It makes my skin crawl."His pupils contracted with sudden horror. His hand shook so violently that the velvet box nearly dropped."Please, just let me explain!" He lunged forward a desperate step, trying to close the gap between us. "There is absolutely nothing going on between Sabine and me! I only ever saw her as a sister. The stunt at the birthday dinner was entirely my mother's doing. I screamed at her for it afterward."The words tumbled out of him in a panicked, breathless rush, the broken capillaries in his bloodshot eyes looking ready to burst. "I've exiled Sabine to an overseas branch. She

Over the next few months, I severed every remaining tie to my old life and spent my days in the studio learning oil painting restoration.Phaelis was filled with beautiful, golden sunlight and the rich aroma of fresh coffee. There was no endless waiting here, no suffocating scent of seafood, and no man constantly whispering "next time" in my ear.Six months later, my first independent restoration piece was selected to be exhibited at the academy's gallery. It was an 18th-century portrait that had arrived at the studio in catastrophic condition. The paint layers were badly cracked and flaking away, leaving the subject's face a blurred, unrecognizable ghost. I had spent three grueling months restoring her, millimeter by millimeter, until she was finally whole again.Professor Ethan Whitaker stood beside me, looking at the canvas. A warm, appreciative smile graced his elegant features."Eliza, you are incredibly talented," he said softly. "You've breathed life back into her soul.""

At two in the morning, I landed at the airport. As I pulled my rolling suitcase out of the arrivals hall, a damp, chilly gust of wind hit me square in the face.Alice stood just beyond the security railing in a classic trench coat, waving her arms wildly. "Eliza! Over here!"I walked over, and she immediately pulled me into a tight hug."You've lost weight," she said, pinching my cheek with concern. "Come on. I'm taking you for a local feast to celebrate your escape."In the car, watching the unfamiliar streets roll by, I felt a lightness I had never known before. I inserted my new SIM card and logged into my secondary account. The moment I went online, Cecily's messages flooded in.[Eliza! Did you land yet?][Holy shit! Ryan has completely lost his mind.][He showed up at my apartment this morning, pounding on the door like a psychopath!][He kept demanding where I was hiding you. When I told him I had no idea, he practically tried to kick my security door off!]My fingers

I stared at the text on my screen and left it on read.A few moments later, another bubble popped up.Ryan: [Are you mad? I promise I'll make it up to you tomorrow.]There he came again, making it up.I switched my phone to silent, tossed it onto the sofa, and went into the kitchen to make some food. This was going to be my last meal in the States.Just as the pasta was ready, the front door lock clicked. Ryan hurried into the apartment, freezing when he saw me in the kitchen.I set the plate down on the dining table, pulled out a chair, and sat down. "I thought you were at the hospital, staying with Sabine."He poured himself a glass of water. "Sabine said she was craving those lobster rolls from the west side of town. I just ran back to grab the car keys so I could go buy them for her."That was the same neighborhood where he had once unchained a bike and ridden through a rainstorm just to bring me beef patties. Now, he was willing to cross half the city just to satisfy Sabin
