Chapter 4

Author: Nora Nolan
I stared at the text on my screen and left it on read.

A few moments later, another bubble popped up.

Ryan: [Are you mad? I promise I'll make it up to you tomorrow.]

There he came again, making it up.

I switched my phone to silent, tossed it onto the sofa, and went into the kitchen to make some food. This was going to be my last meal in the States.

Just as the pasta was ready, the front door lock clicked. Ryan hurried into the apartment, freezing when he saw me in the kitchen.

I set the plate down on the dining table, pulled out a chair, and sat down. "I thought you were at the hospital, staying with Sabine."

He poured himself a glass of water. "Sabine said she was craving those lobster rolls from the west side of town. I just ran back to grab the car keys so I could go buy them for her."

That was the same neighborhood where he had once unchained a bike and ridden through a rainstorm just to bring me beef patties. Now, he was willing to cross half the city just to satisfy Sabine's sudden craving.

When I didn't say anything, his brows knitted right back into a tight frown. "Eliza, are you seriously throwing another tantrum? I already told you, Sabine is injured. I can't just abandon her and leave her helpless, can I? Can't you try to understand the position I'm in for once?"

I lifted a forkful of pasta to my mouth. They tasted bland.

"I'm not throwing a tantrum," I said calmly. "Go buy them. Don't keep her waiting."

He shot me a suspicious look, clearly caught off guard by how entirely detached I sounded. But he was in too much of a rush to deep-dive into my mood.

"I'm heading out then. I probably won't be back tonight," he said. "Sabine is terrified of being alone in a hospital room, so I need to stay overnight with her. Go to sleep early."

He scooped his car keys off the counter and turned to leave. At the door, he suddenly stopped and glanced at the empty shoe rack. "Where are your slippers?"

I swallowed without looking up. "They were old, so I threw them out."

Without another word, he walked out and closed the door.

I took my time to finish my pasta. After washing the dishes and leaving them upside down on the drying rack, I threw on my backpack, grabbed the handle of my compact black suitcase, and walked out of the apartment without looking back.

On the airport shuttle, I leaned my head against the cold glass of the window, watching the city I had lived in for seven years blur into a streak of taillights.

My phone screen flared to life. It was a message from my best friend, Cecily Lane, containing a screenshot of Sabine's latest social media post.

The photo captured a takeout container of steaming lobster rolls resting against the sterile white sheets of a hospital bed. A man's hand was carefully forking up one of the rolls.

Glinting on his wrist was a Patek Philippe watch—the one I had scrimped and saved for six months to buy Ryan for his birthday last year.

The caption read: [My ankle hurts like hell, but when someone crosses the entire city just to get your favorite lobster rolls, a sprain suddenly feels like a blessing.]

Ryan had left a comment that read: [Eat slowly. No one's going to take them from you.]

Cecily followed up with furious messages.

[Don't tell me you're spending your fifth anniversary sitting home alone right now!]

[Ryan is an absolute piece of shit. Does he even consider you his girlfriend?]

I replied: [Cecily, I'm leaving. Going to Phaelis.]

After a long silence, she sent a voice message thick with tears: "Wise choice! Don't ever look back."

I exited the app, pulled out the SIM card, and dropped it out the bus window into the rushing wind.

I flipped through the journal casually. The first entry was dated the day I flew out of the country.[Eliza is gone. Ryan didn't go back to the States.Instead, he holed up in a hotel directly across the street from my apartment, lingering on the perimeter of my life like a stubborn ghost.Every morning when I left for the studio, he'd stand on the street corner, holding a warm croissant from my favorite bakery. He never dared to approach me. He just watched from a distance with eyes that were desperate and pleading. One afternoon, a torrential downpour hit Phaelis. I hadn't brought an umbrella, so I stood under the awning of the studio waiting for the storm to pass.A black car pulled up to the curb, and Ryan stepped out under a large black umbrella, walking briskly toward me. One side of his shoulder was already drenched."Eliza, it's pouring," he said hesitantly. "Let me give you a ride home."He tilted the umbrella toward me, but I refused flatly, "No need. I've called a ride.""It can't navigate this narrow alleyway," he argued anxiously. "It isn't the time to throw a tantrum. What if you

I stared down at the vibrant green stone.Once, I had stupidly believed that slipping that piece of bracelet onto my wrist would mean finally securing his unconditional love and validation. Now, it looked like nothing but an invisible shackle."Sabine already wore that bracelet," I said evenly. He froze, unsure how to respond."I don't want something another woman has already put on. It makes my skin crawl."His pupils contracted with sudden horror. His hand shook so violently that the velvet box nearly dropped."Please, just let me explain!" He lunged forward a desperate step, trying to close the gap between us. "There is absolutely nothing going on between Sabine and me! I only ever saw her as a sister. The stunt at the birthday dinner was entirely my mother's doing. I screamed at her for it afterward."The words tumbled out of him in a panicked, breathless rush, the broken capillaries in his bloodshot eyes looking ready to burst. "I've exiled Sabine to an overseas branch. She

Over the next few months, I severed every remaining tie to my old life and spent my days in the studio learning oil painting restoration.Phaelis was filled with beautiful, golden sunlight and the rich aroma of fresh coffee. There was no endless waiting here, no suffocating scent of seafood, and no man constantly whispering "next time" in my ear.Six months later, my first independent restoration piece was selected to be exhibited at the academy's gallery. It was an 18th-century portrait that had arrived at the studio in catastrophic condition. The paint layers were badly cracked and flaking away, leaving the subject's face a blurred, unrecognizable ghost. I had spent three grueling months restoring her, millimeter by millimeter, until she was finally whole again.Professor Ethan Whitaker stood beside me, looking at the canvas. A warm, appreciative smile graced his elegant features."Eliza, you are incredibly talented," he said softly. "You've breathed life back into her soul.""

At two in the morning, I landed at the airport. As I pulled my rolling suitcase out of the arrivals hall, a damp, chilly gust of wind hit me square in the face.Alice stood just beyond the security railing in a classic trench coat, waving her arms wildly. "Eliza! Over here!"I walked over, and she immediately pulled me into a tight hug."You've lost weight," she said, pinching my cheek with concern. "Come on. I'm taking you for a local feast to celebrate your escape."In the car, watching the unfamiliar streets roll by, I felt a lightness I had never known before. I inserted my new SIM card and logged into my secondary account. The moment I went online, Cecily's messages flooded in.[Eliza! Did you land yet?][Holy shit! Ryan has completely lost his mind.][He showed up at my apartment this morning, pounding on the door like a psychopath!][He kept demanding where I was hiding you. When I told him I had no idea, he practically tried to kick my security door off!]My fingers
