Chapter 2

Author: Echo
Mount Olympus was taller than I ever imagined.

I lost track of how many days I climbed.

My skirt was shredded by thorns. The blisters on my feet popped and bled. My knees were scraped raw against the rocks.

Giant eagles meant to guard the mountain swooped over my head, and I had to hug a tree trunk and play dead. Several times, I almost slipped off the edge of a cliff, only surviving by clawing desperately at the stone.

Only one thought kept me going.

I had to see Apollo. I had to yell at him to his face.

I don't know how long it took, but suddenly, a blinding golden light pierced my vision.

I looked up.

A magnificent, golden temple hovered right there above the sea of clouds.

I crept toward the massive doors.

The inside of the temple was more breathtaking than I could have ever dreamed, but my eyes immediately locked onto the man sitting in the center of the hall.

He was tall and lean, sitting behind a literal mountain of scrolls.

He wore a pristine white chiton, his golden hair shining like the sun itself. His features were so flawless he looked carved from marble.

He didn't even look up. His brows were furrowed, one hand propping up his head while the other quickly scribbled on a scroll. Several divine attendants were carrying even more scrolls to add to his pile.

I recognized that face.

From the statues in the temples. It was him. Apollo.

Ten years of prayers, ten years of injustice, ten years of whips and tears—it all surged up in my chest at once.

I didn't care about anything else. I sprinted up the steps and threw my arms around his leg.

An ugly wail ripped from my throat.

I sobbed at the top of my lungs.

"Apollo! I finally found you!"

Everyone in the temple froze. An attendant dropped their scrolls in sheer shock, the parchment scattering everywhere.

Apollo’s hand stopped mid-air. He slowly looked down.

His eyes were a glowing, brilliant gold. I’d never seen anything like them.

"...Who are you?"

I looked up, my face covered in dirt and tears. "I'm your believer! My name is Juliette! I've prayed to you every single night since I was a kid!"

"Let go of me," he frowned.

I hugged his leg tighter. "No! If you don't give me justice, I'm never letting go!"

"What are the guards even doing?" he muttered, turning his head, clearly annoyed.

A few guards rushed in to drag me away.

I clung to his leg for dear life, wrapping around him like a vine, and shrieked, "You're the God of Light, and you just watched your believer get abused for ten years! Ten years! Where were you when I was chopping wood and getting whipped?! They tried to sell me to a sixty-year-old man, did you know that?!"

Apollo raised a hand, and the guards froze in their tracks.

He looked down at me, his expression complicated.

"...You came all this way... for this?"

"What do you mean 'for this'?!" I cried, snot and tears running down my face. "You're the most glorious god! You have a duty to bring truth to the world!"

Apollo’s expression went completely blank.

I could tell he was too stunned to speak. The other attendants in the hall looked like they wanted to sink into the floor.

"Let me tell you!" I continued, gaining momentum. "My adoptive dad Gerard, my adoptive mom Martha, and their daughter Cassia! They hit me, cursed at me, treated me like a slave, and then tried to sell me for gold coins! Don't you think you should do something about that?!"

Apollo was silent for a long time.

Just as I started wondering if he was going to smite me, he sighed.

"...What do you want me to do?"

My eyes lit up. "Divine punishment! I want them punished!"

"Be specific," he rubbed his temples, sounding like he was trying very hard to be patient.

I thought for a second. "Turn them into pigs! The really fat, stupid kind!"

Apollo’s fingers twitched. I swore I saw the corner of his mouth tremble, like he wanted to laugh but held it back.

"As you wish."

He raised a hand, formed a tiny spark of golden light at his fingertip, and flicked it. The light vanished into the clouds outside the temple.

"It's done," he said. "Satisfied?"

I finally smiled. "Satisfied!"

"Then can you let go of my leg now?"

I shook my head and looked up at him with wide eyes. "Um... if I get bullied again, can I still come find you?"

Apollo had clearly never met a mortal as shameless as me. He looked like he was about to scold me, but his gaze dropped to my shredded skirt, my bleeding knees, and finally to my tear-streaked face.

He sighed again.

This time, there was something softer in his voice, something I couldn't quite read.

He pulled a pendant from his sleeve.

"Take this," he handed it to me. "When you need to find me, say my name three times in your head."

I took it carefully, treating it like the most precious thing in the world. It was a tiny, solid-gold lyre.

"I will hear you," he promised.

Clutching the pendant, I walked back down the mountain, completely satisfied.

Suddenly, the lyre pendant on my chest grew searing hot.A warm, unfamiliar power surged from my chest, spreading through my veins all the way to my fingertips. It wasn't Apollo's power. It was mine. A pulse of golden-green light burst from the ground beneath my feet, rippling outward. The scorched earth turned green again. Dead trees sprouted fresh leaves, and the wounds of the dying soldiers around us began to knit together. Perses's eyes widened in horror. "Impossible—you've awakened?!"I raised my hand. A bright green flame, pure earth magic, formed at my fingertips. Apollo chuckled weakly beside me, his voice full of pride. "My Juliette... has always been amazing."He wiped the golden blood from his mouth and grabbed my hand. The radiant light of the sun and the vital power of the earth twisted together at our intertwined fingers. A massive pillar of gold and green shot straight into the heavens. Perses's face finally dropped. "Move!"It was too late.I raised my other hand, a

Apollo’s silence felt like a dull knife dragging across my chest. Finally, he spoke."It's true." In that moment, I heard my own heart shatter."I knew the first time you grabbed my leg and cried," he said slowly. "You have a very faint, pure trace of Titan divinity in you. I'm the only one on Olympus who could sense it." Perses threw his head back and laughed."Did you hear that, Princess?! He locked you up on this mountain not out of pity, not out of love—but because you are a rare spoil of war! A bargaining chip he needed in his hand!""Shut up," Apollo growled. He took a step toward me, his voice softening in a way it rarely did."Juliette, listen to me. I didn't keep you here because—" Suddenly, Perses shoved me. I was thrown violently toward Apollo.Apollo's expression changed, and he instinctively reached out to catch me.That was the moment. I saw a vicious smirk flash across Perses's red eyes. He raised his massive black broadsword and brought it down hard toward both of u

The war raged for three days and three nights. The plains below Olympus were drenched in blood. Mortal cities fell and were reclaimed, one after another. I refused to hide in the side chamber.I begged the attendants to let me stay behind the front lines. A lot of minor gods were brought there wounded, so I rolled up my sleeves and worked day and night to help patch them up.Someone asked me, "Aren't you Lord Apollo’s guest? Why are you doing this?"I just smiled and didn't answer. I just wanted to help. On the morning of the fourth day, I decided to sneak up and try to catch a glimpse of Apollo. But before I could, a freezing cold hand clamped down on my shoulder.I went entirely stiff. "The blood of a Titan," a low, raspy voice whispered in my ear. "So you were hiding here."I whipped around. It was Perses. His rusted armor was covered in the golden ichor of gods, but he didn't look tired at all. His red eyes stared at me like I was a priceless treasure. "Let go of me!" I struggl

That morning, for the first time ever, Apollo wasn't reading scrolls.I ran into the hall with a plate of stolen grapes, only to see him standing by his throne, rolling a wisp of golden mist between his fingers."What are you doing?" I asked, leaning in.He closed his hand, and the mist vanished."Nothing," he glanced at me. "Tonight, dress nicely.""Huh? Why?""You'll see."He turned and left. I stared at his retreating back, feeling a flutter in my chest. That evening, an attendant came to help me get ready. She dressed me in a flowing white gown, pinned golden leaves to my shoulders, styled my hair, and placed a gorgeous floral crown on my head.I barely recognized the girl in the mirror."What... what's the occasion?" I whispered. The attendant smiled. "Lord Apollo didn't tell you? Tonight is a banquet in honor of your birthday." I froze. My birthday.I had never celebrated my birthday. My adoptive parents said I had an item with my birthdate on it when they found me, but they n

Apollo tossed me into a side chamber. It was a room a hundred times more luxurious than anywhere I had ever lived on earth. The bed was made of clouds, the curtains were woven from moonlight, and even the walls gave off a soft glow.He stood in the doorway, looking down at me."Stay here.""Understood.""Don't run around.""Understood.""Don't annoy me.""...Understood."He turned and left. I rolled around on the cloud bed twice.Three days later, I broke all three of his rules. Mount Olympus was massive. Did he really think I was just going to sit in a side room all day? Not a chance. The first time I harassed him, I disguised myself as a statue in the corner of his grand hall.Apollo was sitting on his throne, reading scrolls, frowning hard enough to crush a bug between his brows. Attendants came in one by one—"The Oracle at Delphi has an anomaly," "A plague in the mortal realm needs cleansing," "The Muses are fighting over poetry again," "Dionysus got drunk and tried to swim in th

When the light faded, I collapsed onto the grass. My throat was on fire, and my vision was swimming.I saw the hem of a pristine white chiton pooling on the ground in front of me."Apollo..." I rasped. He didn't answer.I forced my head up. He was standing there, his back to me, his golden hair blazing in the sun. But the air around him was terrifyingly heavy. Damon was sprawled on the ground, pale as a ghost. "Who are you?" he stammered.Apollo didn't speak. He just raised a single finger and flicked it casually.A loud bang echoed through the trees.Damon’s body was thrown backward by an invisible force, slamming violently into a trunk. He coughed up blood and slid to the ground. Lyra dropped to her knees, screaming. "A god! He's a god! Mercy! Please have mercy!"Damon crawled forward and grabbed Apollo's ankle, his voice trembling. "My lord, spare me! I didn't know she was yours! I'll never do it again!" Apollo finally spoke, and his voice was ten times colder than it had been in
