Chapter 4

Author: Little Shadow
The night of the charity gala arrived.

Seth was dressed in a designer tuxedo, with a black diamond bracelet fastened around his wrist.

Three years ago, Sheryl had won it at auction as a coming-of-age gift for me. Now, it rested around Seth's wrist and gave off an understated glimmer when the light hit the beads at certain angles.

I stood beside him in a cheap, ill-fitting suit with my head lowered. Sheryl had given me the bank card, but Seth had cheerfully snatched it away the moment she turned her back.

"Matthew just got out of prison," he said. "He doesn't know anything about current fashion. What if he buys the wrong piece and people laugh at him? It's just a simple thing. We can have one of the household staff take care of it."

He sounded considerate enough. But then, he gave one of the maids a knowing look.

In our household, the maids survived by reading the room. There was no way they were going to put any real effort into helping me. When they tossed me the suit, they hadn't even bothered to iron it. It was all wrinkly, and the pant legs were too short.

People around us began whispering.

"Who is that? He looks kind of familiar."

"Shh. That's the Ingram family's biological son who just got out of prison."

"Seriously? They have some nerve bringing him here."

"I heard he was trouble even in prison. He was always getting into fights…"

Their judgmental whispers wormed their way into my ears.

Seth heard them too. His eyes were filled with smug satisfaction as he slowly turned the black diamond beads around his wrist. Then, he deliberately waved them before my eyes.

He taunted, "This bracelet was originally meant to be your coming-of-age gift. Too bad it's on my wrist now. It's the same for the position of the true Ingram heir and Isabella. They're all mine."

A bitter ache arose in my chest. I lowered my head and stared at the tips of my shoes.

When a waiter approached, I didn't notice him at all. The tray he was carrying slammed into my shoulder. Red wine splashed all over me and sprayed onto Seth, who was right beside me.

Seth glared at me resentfully. Then, his eyes lit up.

He reached up and yanked the diamond beads off his wrist. The string snapped, sending the beads scattering across the floor with a clatter.

Before I could react, he shoved several of the beads into my hand. Then, he threw himself backward and landed heavily on the floor.

Pointing at me with a trembling finger, he said, "Matthew, if you wanted the bracelet, I would've given it to you. Why did you push me?"

Sheryl's expression turned grim.

Isabella was furious. She rushed over and shoved me aside.

"Have you lost your mind, Matthew?" she shrieked.

My balance was already unsteady. The force of her shove sent me crashing into the pillar behind me. A sharp pain shot through the back of my head.

Before I could even recover, Sheryl raised her hand and slapped me across the face. My head snapped to the side from the harsh slap, and the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.

The impact had dislodged the prosthetic eye in my left socket. It slipped out and hit the floor. Then, it rolled several times and came to a stop beside Sheryl's feet with a soft clink.

"What is this?" Sheryl froze.

The next second, a video began playing on the giant screen above the stage.

Sheryl stared at the news alert and shook her head frantically while mumbling, "No… No, this can't be…"She clutched her head and broke down sobbing. "Matthew, I didn't know… I had no idea! If I'd known—"Gabriel cut off her confession coldly. "If you'd known, would you have believed him? No, I think you wouldn't. You would've told Matthew to endure it again for your precious little Seth."Sheryl fell silent. Her face paled, and she couldn't utter another word.Isabella looked equally devastated. She reached out to me, but I immediately shook her off.She apologized, "Matthew, I… I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you. I'll take you to the best doctors…""Make it up to me?" I pointed to my lifeless prosthetic eye. "Can you make this eye grow back?"Then, I pointed toward the sky. "Can you bring Bruce back to life? Your apologies aren't worth a damn."I turned and refused to look at these repulsive people again. Gabriel supported my unsteady body and led me away. After that night, t

My heart sank to my stomach."What do you mean?" I asked, feeling a lump in my throat.Just then, the phone I'd been clutching suddenly vibrated. A breaking news alert had appeared on my screen. The headline read, "Fire at Outskirts Nursing Home—Victims Identified, Several Dementia Patients Among Those Killed."My hands began trembling violently. I could barely tap on the link with my fingers. As Seth watched my reaction, the smile on his face became even more vicious. "Do you see it, Matthew?"He leaned close to my ear and whispered the cruelest words imaginable. "That old man has been dead for a long time. He died on the very day you got out of prison. On the same day you lowered your head and agreed to be my assistant, that nursing home caught fire."I used the Ingram family's influence to pressure the media into keeping the story quiet. I deliberately had the news released today. So, Matthew, what do you think? Do you like my little gift?"That fire burned hot. I heard the

I said solemnly, "You say the video is fake, and that I bullied Seth, right? Then what about this?"I opened another folder. It contained something Seth had never imagined I'd kept, which was an even more damning recording. It was from three years ago, when Seth came to visit me in prison, convinced he'd already won. He'd told me everything himself. His voice in the recording was arrogant and savage."Matthew, you really think Sheryl and Isabella love you? Keep dreaming. In their eyes, you're nothing more than a tool they can use to take the fall for me. Once you're locked up, I'll make sure you're well taken care of. Especially those eyes of yours. They really piss me off. "I'll have someone gouge them out and kick them around like balls. Just rot in here. Everything that belongs to the Ingram family, as well as Isabella, will always be mine!"Everyone in the ballroom exclaimed in shock.Isabella stood frozen, too stunned to speak. Her wineglass slipped from her hand and shatt

Gabriel spat, "All three of you are all nothing but scumbags."He turned, standing in front of me while pointing at Seth, Isabella, and Sheryl.Gabriel berated, "Are you even human? I've seen women forced into prostitution, but I've never seen anyone force their own brother to take the blame for a crime and then have his eye gouged out. Never have I seen such a thing in my entire life!"Seth shouted furiously, "You're talking nonsense! Who the hell are you? You have no right to slander me! That video has to be fake! Matthew is jealous of me. He teamed up with some outsider to frame me!"Gabriel sneered, "Why would I bother framing trash like you?"Suddenly, someone in the crowd gasped. "I remember now! He's Gabriel Chapple!"A wealthy woman pointed at Gabriel, her face filled with horror. "He's that… that murderer from the notorious case that shocked the entire city! He killed his gambler father! He's a convicted murderer!"The moment those words were spoken, the entire hall gas

In the video, Seth sat curled up on a couch, reeking of alcohol, while Isabella stood beside him and spoke to me coldly."Have Matthew take the blame… Seth isn't in good health. He wouldn't survive a place like prison. You're stronger, and you've been through hardships before. Just endure it for a while, and it'll be over… If you confess and take the blame, I'll still marry you when you get out."The guests present cried out in shock and disbelief."Oh my God! So the drunk-driving accident was actually a cover-up?""That's disgusting! They forced the true heir to go to prison just to protect their adopted son!""And she said he was strong enough to handle it… She sent him to prison! What kind of monster says something like that?"Isabella stared at the giant screen in horror, her face deathly pale. She screamed at the staff nearby, "Turn it off! Turn it off right now! Who put this video on? Shut it down!" Seth was even more terrified. He bolted for the stage and tried to yank

The entire ballroom fell silent. Everyone's eyes were fixed in horror on the lone prosthetic eye lying at Sheryl's feet before slowly shifting to the empty socket on the left side of my face."Ah!" Someone screamed. The entire room gasped and started expressing their shock."Oh my goodness! Is that an eyeball?""His eye… He's blind in one eye?"Sheryl's entire body stiffened. She reached out with a trembling hand toward the prosthetic eye, only to jerk it back as though she'd been burned.Isabella's face went pale, and her voice nearly broke. "Where's your eye? Matthew, where's your eye?"Seth stood nearby, shouting in panic, "Matthew! Why did you take that disgusting thing out? Put it back in!""Shut up!" Sheryl suddenly shouted. She stared at my empty eye socket, and her pupils contracted violently. She remembered that before I'd gone to prison, I'd had a pair of charming, bright eyes."Who did this?" Her voice was cold, but there was a tremor beneath it.At that moment, a
