Chapter 2

Penulis: Bent Branch
Mom sent me a message. "I left some food in the fridge that I made this morning, so warm it and eat it; keep it low-fat and don't add any seasoning."

In that instant, my eyes welled up.

Mom had been leaving before sunrise to run her street stall ever since I was diagnosed with severe renal insufficiency, but she always made my breakfast according to my diet before she went. Dad worked during the day and delivered food at night, working nonstop to support us.

Jolene was beautiful and a talented dancer, but she hadn't touched her dance shoes in ten years because she had to donate a kidney to me.

There were quite a few times when I got up at night and caught Jolene on tiptoe, twirling gently in the living room, looking as graceful as a swan. She should have been soaring through the sky like one, not turning into an ugly duckling for my sake.

I slipped on a mask and grabbed a cab to the hospital.

Layla Warner, my attending doctor, asked solemnly, "Do you really want to forego the treatment, Ms. Lester?"

I signed the form without a second thought. "I'm 18 now, so I can decide for myself, Dr. Warner."

I couldn't help but tremble as I signed the final stroke. I wanted to live, just like everyone else. I couldn't just ask my entire family to sacrifice everything for my sake, though. Mom and Dad wouldn't have aged so quickly, and Jolene wouldn't have given up her dream if it weren't for me.

Dominic had also applied to a local university last year just so he could stick around and care for me, even though he could have had a much brighter prospect.

In that instant, tears dripped onto the paper and bled through my signature.

Dr. Warner felt sorry for me and added, "You have an excellent chance of making a full recovery once you get a kidney transplant, Ms. Lester."

I trembled as I said, "You said it yourself, Dr. Warner—it's only a strong chance. What should I do if I don't get any better? Do I really have to drag them down for the rest of their lives?"

Dr. Warner fell silent. She had witnessed countless cases of life and death, as well as families exhausting everything they had to save a loved one, only to end up with nothing. She put away the refusal-of-treatment form and said, "Your choice is a sensible one, but it is really cruel, Ms. Lester."

I was on the verge of tears, but I stubbornly held them back. I came from an ordinary family, so there was no way we could afford the burden of a condition like mine. I simply thought that rather than end up with nothing in the end, it would be better to give up on treatment early.

"It isn't cruel at all," I said as I held up my hand and started listing the benefits on my fingers for Dr. Warner.

"Mom's back acts up whenever it rains; without me around, that money raised for my surgery can go toward treating her. Dad's leg has been giving him trouble, so he can finally afford the surgery to fix it.

"Jolene can use the money raised for my surgery to pay for Briarlune Dance Academy, and Dominic can apply for grad school at Briarlune. They're such good, talented people. They shouldn't have to give up their futures because of me."

I couldn't help but burst into tears by the time I finished speaking.

Dr. Warner sighed.

I dropped to my knees and begged her, saying, "Please don't tell my parents about this, Dr. Warner."

Just then, the door swung open. "I brought over Jolene's test reports to see if she meets the requirements for the surgery, Dr. Warner."

Mom stopped dead in her tracks when she saw me on my knees.

I got to my feet and looked at Dr. Warner pleadingly, silently telling her not to say anything to Mom. I then turned to Mom and said, "I just came to ask Dr. Warner when the surgery will take place."

"You ungrateful brute!" Mom slapped me hard across the face, her bloodshot eyes brimming with tears.

"Jolene sacrificed her own dreams to donate her kidney to you, yet all you care about is when the surgery will happen! Have you ever cared about Jolene? Do you even know what our family has given up to pay for your surgery, Natalie?"

She trembled with rage. "You don't get it at all! How could I have given birth to such an ungrateful burden like you?"

I was finally laid to rest, and time just trickled by day by day.Mom and Dad went to the hospital for their health checkups and were told that they needed to undergo surgery. Jolene took the train to Briarlune Dance Academy, bringing her dance shoes with her. Dominic threw himself into his studies and reportedly won a scholarship.I watched from above and smiled. Their lives had truly started getting better once I was out of the picture. Mom and Dad had their surgeries, Jolene took the stage to dance professionally, and Dominic headed off to Briarlune for his studies, just like he had always dreamed of. I could finally let go and leave in peace now.I had been blessed with good fortune, as Mom's and Dad's surgeries had gone smoothly. Jolene requested a leave of absence from her dance academy to come home and look after them. She sat beside their hospital beds, peeling an apple as she said, "I won first place in the dance competition."Dad froze for a moment before saying, "That'

Mom and Dad looked at Jolene after hearing that, then quietly shifted their gaze over to my funeral portrait.I hovered over them, saying, "You two owe Jolene an apology for wrongly accusing her!"They couldn't possibly hear what I said, though.Mom buried her face in her hands in despair, while Dad let out a sorrowful sigh.I was confused. Why weren't they happy even with me gone? I didn't want things to turn out this way. Jolene got up and dropped to her knees in front of my funeral portrait. "Do you have a grudge against us? What was going through your head right before you ended your life, Natalie?"I just wanted everyone to be healthy and happy. I wanted to see you smile more often. I was already dead, though, so no one could hear what I had to say.It was then that the doorbell rang. Dominic opened the door to find Ms. Lowe holding a bouquet of white lilies. "I'm so sorry for your loss…"Jolene's eyes were brimming with tears. "Natalie died because of me, Ms. Lowe! If I

I was lying quietly in the medical examiner's office, neither angry nor happy, neither crying nor causing a scene.Mom's hands were shaking so much that she couldn't bring herself to pull back the white sheet. She looked at Dad, practically begging for reassurance. "It couldn't possibly be Natalie, right?"Dad's trembling hand reached for the white sheet, only to fall back down. He refused to believe that the person beneath the white sheet was me. "Natalie is about to have her transplant soon; she's going to have a second chance at life. Why on earth would she end her own life despite knowing that?"Jolene gritted her teeth and said, "If neither of you can do it, I will! I'm 100% certain that this isn't Natalie!"She walked over and lifted the white sheet, revealing the person beneath it with a peaceful expression and the faintest smile on her lips. She finally realized that the person lying there was actually me.Jolene took a few steps back in shock before losing her balance and

I couldn't help but feel a pang in my chest. How could Mom, Dad, and Dominic just leave Jolene behind? How many times had they done the same to her over those 18 years, when I wasn't there to see it? I wanted to reach out and comfort her, but my hand passed through her face. I couldn't do anything. I was already dead. I couldn't even comfort Jolene anymore.I wanted to cry too, but I was already dead. I couldn't possibly cry now.Jolene wiped her tears and headed back the way we had come instead of going home. She retraced the path we had taken, softly calling out to me. "It's time to go home, Natalie! I'm really sorry… I know I shouldn't have been jealous of you…"She passed the place where I had jumped into the river and saw that the police had cordoned off the area. She stopped for a moment, then went around it. "Natalie wanted to live so badly. She's going to be fine."She spent the entire night searching for me, her feet covered in blisters and her voice gone. She returned h

Jolene rested her head against Mom's back during their ride home, her eyes completely bloodshot. "Do you think we're being too harsh on Natalie, Mom?"Mom's voice caught as she tried to hold back her tears. "We've coddled Natalie ever since she got sick, so a little tough love will do her some good." She suddenly brought her electric bike to a stop. "I-It's already getting late, though… Natalie has never gone home alone before…"Dad sighed. "Why don't you two head home first? I'll head back to grab Natalie.""Natalie does need to learn her lesson, but she's never had a hard time growing up before this…" Jolene pursed her lips, her eyes welling up.I desperately reached out to wipe Jolene's tears as I hovered above them. "Please don't cry… I'm where I'm supposed to be now… You have to live a good life—a bright one—from now on, Jolene…"Mom and Dad remained silent as they looked at Jolene. They had made a healthy child donate her kidney and then shown favoritism toward the sickly

I sat in the seat Jolene had been sitting in and ate the food Mom had specially prepared for me. I was crying as I drank the soup that came with the steamed cabbage, so it ended up being salty. I could feel the pain in my lower back intensifying, which meant that my kidney disease was acting up again. I was all alone in the private dining room when a waiter walked up awkwardly and asked, "Can you please give me your parents' contact information? They still haven't settled the bill…" I meant to settle Jolene's bill, but my pockets were empty. I had used all my pocket money to pay for the cab to the hospital earlier.I forced down the rest of the cabbage soup along with my tears, then ravenously ate the delicious dishes left on the table. I hadn't had any glazed roast chicken and jumbo shrimp in ages. I had imagined they would taste heavenly, but now they all tasted unbearably sour and bitter.I forced myself to swallow, though the food tasted like cardboard.Jolene suddenly p
