Fourteen hours earlier

Rainier hadn't officially passed me his Alpha title yet, but he surely did charge me with multiple responsibilities. I spent the entire morning trying to figure out how to protect the pack's borders, but then my brother brought me another piece of grim news.

"There has been another attack on our borders. This time, they came from the south," Eric reported.

I cursed under my breath. My blood was boiling, and I needed a moment to regain my composure. "How many?" I strained through my teeth.

"Five dead, and six sent to the hospital," Eric said.

"What about the lycans?"

"Our warriors killed most of them, but…" Eric's mouth twisted uncomfortably.

"But?" I urged.

"A few of them managed to get deep into the woods of our territory, and our troupes lost them."

"Damn it!" I roared, hitting the desk with my fist.
