Chapter 1

Author: Mercy Ashquill
I walked into the grand ballroom where my coming-of-age ceremony was being held, and the first person I saw was Kieran Dante of the Redclaw Pack.

His pack friends surrounded him near the champagne fountain and when they spotted me, they immediately started laughing.

"Well, if it isn't Elisa, Kieran's personal shadow for the past decade," one of them called out loudly. "Even at your own ceremony, you can't stop following him around."

Another one chimed in with a smirk. “I heard she keeps a photo of him on her desk at the pack house and that she once challenged three she-wolves to fights just because they danced with him at the Winter Solstice celebration.”

The group erupted in laughter while Kieran looked at me with pure contempt in his dark eyes.

"You've been chasing after me since we were fifteen years old, embarrassing both our packs repeatedly with your obsession. Even at your own ceremony, you're still hovering around me. What exactly do you want from me this time?"

"I’m not following you around," I replied calmly. "My father is announcing the alliance with the Redclaw Pack tonight, and I'm simply fulfilling my duties as his daughter."

The silence that followed was deafening as everyone within earshot turned to stare at us.

Kieran’s beta spoke first, “An alliance between the Whitehaven Pack and the Redclaw Pack? That hasn’t been announced yet.”

His reaction made perfect sense because the alliance was supposed to remain confidential until my father made the official announcement during tonight’s ceremony.

My father was the Alpha of the most powerful pack in the region, and according to ancient pack law, I had the right to choose my mate from among the heirs of the allied packs during my coming-of-age ceremony.

Whoever I chose would receive not only my hand in marriage but also control over the vast trade routes that connected all the Northern Territories.

Everyone knew I'd been chasing after Kieran since we were fifteen, so the announcement of an alliance with the Redclaw Pack basically confirmed he would inherit one of the most coveted positions in the werewolf world.

Kieran’s friends immediately started congratulating him.

“Congratulations, Kieran! Looks like you’re about to become one of the most powerful Alphas in the entire region!”

Kieran’s expression showed some satisfaction, but when he looked at me, his eyes still held nothing but disgust.

He walked toward me and when he got close enough, he leaned in and whispered so only I could hear, “I’m not going to make the same mistakes. If you want me as your mate, you need to understand something very clearly right now.”

My breath caught in my throat and I stared at him in complete shock.

He’d been reborn too.

Just like me.

“You can have the title of my mate and the Luna position, but my heart will always belong to Sera. She’s the only one I’ll ever truly love, and if you can’t accept that, then you can forget about this alliance entirely.”

I was still processing this revelation when a soft, fragile voice called out.

“Elisa.”

I turned to see Sera Walsh standing near the ballroom's side entrance, her face pale and her body swaying slightly like she might collapse at any moment.

Kieran’s entire mood changed the instant he saw her, and he rushed to her side without a second thought,“Sera, what happened? Why are you here alone?”

She leaned heavily against him. “I’m sorry, Kieran. I know today is important for Elisa's ceremony, but I felt dizzy and I think I might have twisted my ankle on the stairs outside.”

Her words were carefully chosen to make it sound like I’d abandoned her when she needed help.

And just as I expected, his eyes turned fierce when he looked back at me.

“She’s your best friend and practically your sister, yet you let her come here by herself when she’s barely recovered? How can you be so selfish and heartless toward someone who’s always been there for you?”

Before I could respond, Sera's knees gave way.

She collapsed against Kieran's chest with a soft gasp.

"Kieran, I'm sorry, I think I pushed myself too hard," she whispered, her entire body going limp in his arms.

Kieran caught her immediately and scooped her up.

"Someone get the pack doctor now!" he shouted at his friends. "And prepare a car — we need to get her to the healer immediately!"

One of his friends pulled out his phone. Another rushed toward the exit.

Kieran didn't spare me another glance as he carried Sera toward the entrance, his entire focus on the woman in his arms.

“Hold on, Sera, you’re going to be fine. I’ve got you, I promise I won’t let anything happen to you,” he murmured to her.

As he walked past me, he stopped just long enough to deliver one final cold warning.

“You’d better think carefully about what I said earlier, Elisa. Because if you can’t accept the terms, then this alliance can go straight to hell and you can forget about ever becoming my mate.”

Then he was gone, disappearing into the mansion with Sera cradled protectively against his chest.

I stood there alone on the ballroom entrance, watching them leave while Kieran’s friends whispered among themselves about what a heartless bitch I was.

In my previous life, I would have been devastated by this scene, probably crying and chasing after them to explain myself.

But this time was different.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the folded paper my father had given me weeks ago—the list of eligible heirs from allied packs who could fulfill the marriage arrangement.

According to ancient pack law, any heir with Alpha bloodline from our allied packs had to be included, regardless of their reputation.

Five names were written in neat handwriting.

I picked up the ceremonial pen and without hesitation, drew a firm line through Kieran’s name.

Then I moved my hand down the list and paused at the name everyone feared, Damon Thorne—before placing a checkmark next to it.

I must have fallen asleep at some point because when I opened my eyes again, the room was filled with the light of approaching dusk.I needed to get back to the healing center to check on him, so I quickly stood and straightened my clothes. But as I walked toward the door, I found Kieran standing in the hallway blocking my path with his arms crossed.“You can’t go through with bonding Damon, I’m not going to let you ruin everything!”I raised an eyebrow and looked at him with contempt. “And why exactly can’t I?”“Because you’re supposed to be my mate, that’s why.”“In my previous life, you chose me and we bonded together, and we had a perfect bond that everyone in the region envied.”“We were completely happy and in harmony, the ideal fated mates that other packs looked up to as an example of true love.”Kieran was putting all his cards on the table now and revealing the secret that he too had been reborn. But hearing this twisted version of our previous life, I could only laugh at how

Several hours passed while I sat in the observation room watching through the glass as the healers worked tirelessly on Damon. My father had returned briefly to check on the progress before leaving again to handle urgent pack business.I'd sent word to Damon's father about an hour ago that everything seemed to be proceeding according to plan so far.But the waiting was excruciating because I knew these next few hours would determine whether the curse-breaking ritual would hold permanently or rebound.Through the observation window I could see the sweat on the healers' faces as they concentrated on maintaining the steady flow of healing energy.Three hours later, the light above the treatment room finally went dark and the head healer emerged looking exhausted but relieved."The stabilization treatment was successful, and Damon's condition has improved significantly.""He'll need to remain in the recovery ward for the next few days to ensure there are no complications or relapses.""Onc

Sera was only a few months younger than me, and I still remembered the day my father brought her home to live with us.She'd been found wandering near our pack borders wearing torn clothes and covered in bruises from whatever she'd escaped from.My father took one look at her frightened face and immediately declared she would become part of our pack from that moment forward. They'd given Sera everything she could possibly need to recover from whatever trauma she'd endured before finding us.They spoiled her with lots of gifts and affection. My parents never expected her to contribute anything meaningful to the pack or develop any particular skills, they just wanted her to feel safe and loved.I'd been equally devoted to making sure Sera felt welcome and cherished, sharing everything I had with her without a second thought. She was the closest thing I'd ever had to a real sibling, and I'd treasured that bond more than almost anything else.I never expected that all the love and generosi

"What did you just say?" I asked coldly. He seemed to realize what he had just spilled out as his expression turned apologetic."I know it sounds harsh, but it's the truth, Elisa. Stop lying to yourself about what this bonding with Damon really is."He pushed the ring closer to my face."Just accept reality and take this ring. We both know where you truly belong.""Take that away from my face," I said flatly.Kieran's jaw tightened and he stepped closer instead of backing away. "Is this because the ring isn't expensive enough? I know it's not the most extravagant piece, but once we're properly bonded I'll get you something truly worthy of an Alpha's mate.""You can have any ring you want, any jewelry you desire, I'll commission the finest craftsmen in all the territories to create pieces specifically for you."I looked at him for a long moment, then slowly extended my hand palm up.His entire face lit up with excitement as he moved to place the ring on my finger. But instead of lettin

The rest of the ceremony proceeded without further disruptions, and by late afternoon everything had been finalized according to pack traditions. As guests began departing, I noticed Damon looked even more exhausted than he had at the beginning of the day.His father and I exchanged a glance, and I promised to keep a close eye on him over the coming days. But over the following days, something felt wrong.Every time I saw Damon, he looked more worn down than before. He was growing quieter, more withdrawn, and the color that had returned to his face on the day of the ceremony was fading again. On the third evening, my phone rang.It was Damon's father."Elisa. The healers have told us that Damon needs stabilization treatments to ensure the curse-breaking ritual holds permanently. Without them, everything we accomplished could unravel."He paused."He's refusing to take them."My fingers went cold around the phone.I didn't even stop to change. I was already moving toward the door befor

The bonding ceremony began exactly as planned with guests arriving throughout the early morning hours.Pack leaders and their families presented formal invitations at the entrance before being escorted to their designated areas within the ceremonial hall.My father and Damon's father stood together on the raised platform and jointly announced that today's bonding would strengthen both our packs and confirm our positions as future leaders.Once the official declarations ended, Damon and I were expected to walk through the assembled crowd with ceremonial wine to personally receive congratulations from each group. We moved slowly between the rows of seated guests, pausing to accept blessings and well wishes.About halfway through our rounds, I overheard a cluster of young wolves near the refreshment tables speaking in hushed voices."I'm betting three months before the curse rebounds and kills him.""Too generous, I give it six weeks maximum, the ritual never fully works and everyone know
