Chapter 3

Author: Mercy Ashquill
Sera gasped and clutched his arm dramatically. “Elisa, how could you say something so cruel? Kieran’s only trying to help you understand the situation.”

I was about to tell them both exactly who I’d chosen as my mate when I caught sight of my father nearby. He shook his head at me in a warning.

That’s when I suddenly remembered our conversation from earlier that evening.

“Elisa,” my father had said, pulling me aside before the ceremony began. “I don’t know why you chose Damon Thorne, but I respect your decision. However, we need to keep this quiet for now.”

He'd glanced around. "Damon is undergoing the ritual to break his curse. The Silvermoon Pack's elders began performing it this morning, but it's a delicate process that requires complete focus and silence."

“If we announce your choice now, the attention and speculation will disturb the ritual. The curse can rebound and kill him. So please, keep this between us until the bonding ceremony next week.”

Damon Thorne was rumored to be cursed, brutal, and weak. His pack had fallen from power and everyone whispered that his abilities were nearly nonexistent.

I hadn’t known much about him personally.

We’d never spoken.

But I remembered his fate clearly from my previous life.

Less than a year after Kieran and I bonded, news spread through the packs that Damon had finally succumbed to his curse.

He died alone in the Silvermoon Pack’s ancestral grounds.

But this time, I wouldn’t let that happen.

Kieran must have mistaken my silence for defeat because his smug expression grew even more pronounced.

“See? You’re finally accepting reality. There’s no one else who will bond with you except me, so stop with these childish games.”

He reached out to grab my wrist. “Now come apologize to Sera for being so rude, and then we can—”

I pulled my arm away before he could touch me. “You’ll find out who I’m bonding with soon enough.”

I turned to walk away but Sera stepped in front of me.

“Elisa, I know you’ve liked Kieran for years. And I do love him, but you’re my best friend and an Alpha’s daughter. I could never compete with you. Just promise you won’t punish me for his feelings.”

Perfect victim act.

Making everyone think I was the jealous one ruining their love story.

But I knew better.

In my past life, I’d found the pregnancy test hidden in the bathroom trash after Sera had visited our house.

When I’d confronted him, he didn’t even bother denying it.

He just stared at me with cold eyes and said Sera was carrying his pup.

My father had sent Sera away the moment he learned the truth, exiling her to another pack to avoid the disgrace.

She'd moved on quickly, finding herself a wealthy mate from another pack.

But Kieran never forgave me.

He started bringing home she-wolf after she-wolf, all of them bearing an uncanny resemblance to Sera.

He’d parade them through our house, making sure our mate bond forced me to feel every intimate moment.

The torture went on until my body finally gave out.

“You’re right,” I said to Sera. “You could never compete with me. So take him. He’s yours.”

Kieran laughed behind me. “Nice try, Elisa. But we both know you’ll be crying at the ceremony begging me to mark you.”

The bonding ceremony was scheduled for one week from today.

Before then, Damon would need to recover from the ritual, and I would need to prepare everything for our announcement.

I spent the next three days organizing the ceremony details myself, selecting everything from the venue decorations to the menu.

My father had offered to hire event planners, but I wanted to handle it personally.

Meanwhile, Kieran and Sera were impossible to avoid.

Sera’s social media was flooded with posts of the two of them together—at restaurants, at the beach, even shopping for what looked suspiciously like bonding gifts.

Every romantic activity a couple could do, they were doing it.

And Sera made sure to tag me in every single post.

On the fourth day, my phone rang while I was reviewing the guest list.

It was Sera.

“Oh Elisa! Kieran and I just got back from the pack borders, and he was so worked up that he couldn’t even wait until we got upstairs. He took me right there in his car and kept saying he needed to get his fill of me before his bonding with you. He’s never been that rough before, I loved every second of it.”

I hung up without saying a word and immediately blocked her number.

Not even five minutes later, Kieran called.

“What the hell, Elisa? Sera just told me you blocked her for no reason. She’s crying now because she thinks you hate her.”

“She fell down the stairs because she was so upset after you hung up on her. She twisted her ankle and everything!”

I could hear Sera whimpering dramatically in the background.

“You need to come over right now and apologize to Sera now. And if you don’t, I’m calling off the bonding ceremony. I don’t care what our packs agreed to, I won’t bond with someone who treats Sera like this.”

I hung up without responding and blocked his number too.

That evening, my father called with news—Damon had survived the ritual.

The curse was broken.

"I've already sent word to the allied packs," my father said. "Tomorrow evening, we'll gather at the main hall to make the formal announcement of your chosen mate."

"Perfect," I smiled.

Tomorrow, everyone would learn the truth.

I must have fallen asleep at some point because when I opened my eyes again, the room was filled with the light of approaching dusk.I needed to get back to the healing center to check on him, so I quickly stood and straightened my clothes. But as I walked toward the door, I found Kieran standing in the hallway blocking my path with his arms crossed.“You can’t go through with bonding Damon, I’m not going to let you ruin everything!”I raised an eyebrow and looked at him with contempt. “And why exactly can’t I?”“Because you’re supposed to be my mate, that’s why.”“In my previous life, you chose me and we bonded together, and we had a perfect bond that everyone in the region envied.”“We were completely happy and in harmony, the ideal fated mates that other packs looked up to as an example of true love.”Kieran was putting all his cards on the table now and revealing the secret that he too had been reborn. But hearing this twisted version of our previous life, I could only laugh at how

Several hours passed while I sat in the observation room watching through the glass as the healers worked tirelessly on Damon. My father had returned briefly to check on the progress before leaving again to handle urgent pack business.I'd sent word to Damon's father about an hour ago that everything seemed to be proceeding according to plan so far.But the waiting was excruciating because I knew these next few hours would determine whether the curse-breaking ritual would hold permanently or rebound.Through the observation window I could see the sweat on the healers' faces as they concentrated on maintaining the steady flow of healing energy.Three hours later, the light above the treatment room finally went dark and the head healer emerged looking exhausted but relieved."The stabilization treatment was successful, and Damon's condition has improved significantly.""He'll need to remain in the recovery ward for the next few days to ensure there are no complications or relapses.""Onc

Sera was only a few months younger than me, and I still remembered the day my father brought her home to live with us.She'd been found wandering near our pack borders wearing torn clothes and covered in bruises from whatever she'd escaped from.My father took one look at her frightened face and immediately declared she would become part of our pack from that moment forward. They'd given Sera everything she could possibly need to recover from whatever trauma she'd endured before finding us.They spoiled her with lots of gifts and affection. My parents never expected her to contribute anything meaningful to the pack or develop any particular skills, they just wanted her to feel safe and loved.I'd been equally devoted to making sure Sera felt welcome and cherished, sharing everything I had with her without a second thought. She was the closest thing I'd ever had to a real sibling, and I'd treasured that bond more than almost anything else.I never expected that all the love and generosi

"What did you just say?" I asked coldly. He seemed to realize what he had just spilled out as his expression turned apologetic."I know it sounds harsh, but it's the truth, Elisa. Stop lying to yourself about what this bonding with Damon really is."He pushed the ring closer to my face."Just accept reality and take this ring. We both know where you truly belong.""Take that away from my face," I said flatly.Kieran's jaw tightened and he stepped closer instead of backing away. "Is this because the ring isn't expensive enough? I know it's not the most extravagant piece, but once we're properly bonded I'll get you something truly worthy of an Alpha's mate.""You can have any ring you want, any jewelry you desire, I'll commission the finest craftsmen in all the territories to create pieces specifically for you."I looked at him for a long moment, then slowly extended my hand palm up.His entire face lit up with excitement as he moved to place the ring on my finger. But instead of lettin

The rest of the ceremony proceeded without further disruptions, and by late afternoon everything had been finalized according to pack traditions. As guests began departing, I noticed Damon looked even more exhausted than he had at the beginning of the day.His father and I exchanged a glance, and I promised to keep a close eye on him over the coming days. But over the following days, something felt wrong.Every time I saw Damon, he looked more worn down than before. He was growing quieter, more withdrawn, and the color that had returned to his face on the day of the ceremony was fading again. On the third evening, my phone rang.It was Damon's father."Elisa. The healers have told us that Damon needs stabilization treatments to ensure the curse-breaking ritual holds permanently. Without them, everything we accomplished could unravel."He paused."He's refusing to take them."My fingers went cold around the phone.I didn't even stop to change. I was already moving toward the door befor

The bonding ceremony began exactly as planned with guests arriving throughout the early morning hours.Pack leaders and their families presented formal invitations at the entrance before being escorted to their designated areas within the ceremonial hall.My father and Damon's father stood together on the raised platform and jointly announced that today's bonding would strengthen both our packs and confirm our positions as future leaders.Once the official declarations ended, Damon and I were expected to walk through the assembled crowd with ceremonial wine to personally receive congratulations from each group. We moved slowly between the rows of seated guests, pausing to accept blessings and well wishes.About halfway through our rounds, I overheard a cluster of young wolves near the refreshment tables speaking in hushed voices."I'm betting three months before the curse rebounds and kills him.""Too generous, I give it six weeks maximum, the ritual never fully works and everyone know
