Chosen Mate

The rain tapered off slowly as Miguel Hughes wined up the car's window while stealing a glance at his wife, Eva Hughes, who slowly rubbed her hand slowly on her belly before leaning back on the chair with the seat belts wrapped around her.

The sound of the wind whispering through the trees and the high pitched beep sound from the tree frog filled the night as they drove through the deserted road in the forest.

Eva Hughes protested on passing through that road because of the scary tales that she had heard about the road. She had heard about the robbers and the scary creatures that lurked around the road at night. There was also the myth that whoever went into the forest at night never came back alive.

But here she was, having a drive with her husband in the mysterious forest.

"I can't wait for the baby to come, I am so excited for her birth," Miguel squeaked in excitement as he focused on the drive.

"Me too! That isn't the only thing that I am excited about though," Eva replied, with her hands still placed on her belly.

"Really? Tell me"

"I am excited about who our child would resemble the most. You or me?" Eva chuckled, reaching her hands for the bottle of water as she gulped it down slowly.

"Of course it would be me! My genes are going to be predominant," Miguel joked.

"Thank the Lord, our baby is going to be coming soon. Should we place a bet to see who the baby looks like the most?" She gave him a grin. "If I win the bet, we will be going on a trip to Singapore."

"Singapore?"

"Yes, what are you going to bet with?"

"Eva, if I win the bet, you would be giving me a Piano," Miguel said.

"So do we have a deal?"

"Yes! Deal," Miguel opened his palm, while Eva placed her hand on it as they both squeezed hands tightly.

Miguel inserted a song cassette and increased the volume as they both sang along to the song that blasted from the speakers.

Eva felt the baby move around inside of her and she screamed in excitement, gesturing to Miguel to see the baby's movement.

She removed her seatbelt, pulled her top up as the baby moved around in her stomach. That was the one of the best things that would ever happen to her.

A bright smile creased on his face and before he knew it, tears twinkled in his eyes as he saw their baby move inside her belly.

If not for the fact that they were on a deserted road, he would put the car to a halt and rest his head on Eva's belly so that he could feel the movement of their child.

It was a happy, sweet moment for the couple.

All of a sudden, an antelope suddenly ran out of the thick forest, jumping right in front of the car. Miguel lost control of the car as the car rotated on its own till the car's trunk hit an huge tree, breaking the front window of the car with the inside of the car littered with shattered pieces of glasses.

Eva hit her head on the dashboard as blood trickled down her face while Miguel lost consciousness for some minutes.

Something that looked like a mist covered the whole forest. After some minutes, Miguel regained consciousness. His eyes were squeezed shut as he struggled to get out of the car.

When he got out of the car, he staggered towards the passenger's seat that Eva was sitting at. He knocked on the window for her to come outside but he didn't get any response from her. His fear increased as he forced the door open while pulling her outside the car, placing her body on the wet leaves that littered the ground.

When Miguel saw the blood on her face, he let out a loud scream that sounded back as echoes in his ears. He quickly checked her pulse and that was when he realized that Eva was gone.

"No!" He screamed, sitting on the bare floor while placing her head on his laps.

The memories of how Eva warned him against passing the deserted road in the forest came rushing through his head like a flood. "Eva please wake up. You were right, I should have listened to you."

After trying to bring her back to life through CPR, then Miguel realized that she was gone and he was sure that the baby was gone too.

He let out a cry in the middle of the thick forest, begging the deities for help. "Please help my wife and my child, if there is a deity, please help."

Suddenly, the rain that had eased off, plummeted down to the ground while he wrapped his hands around Eva's body with his hand on her stomach.

Amidst his tears, Miguel felt a cover over his head and when he raised his head up, he saw an umbrella over his head with a woman who looked intimidating staring down at him.

He shrieked in fear on seeing the young woman who had long white hair and white eyebrows. Her lips were heart shaped and she was incredibly beautiful.

"W-Who are you?" Miguel stuttered, running his eyes around the woman.

The woman just stared at Eva's face, ignoring Miguel's questions. Then she darted her eyes off to her protruded stomach. "What exactly do you need my help with?" She knew what he wanted but decided that it was best to hear it from him.

"W-Who are you?" Miguel repeated again.

"You called for a deity and I appeared here. I am the moon goddess. I would ask you for the last time, what do you need my help with?"

Miguel stared at her right in the face, she had a cold expression on her face and her eyes gleamed in the darkness like all the lode stars were gathered inside.

"Please bring back my wife and my daughter. They are my world, there's nothing that I could absolutely do without them. Please save them." He pleaded, going on with his instincts even though he still had a feeling of doubt about the woman who claimed to be the moon goddess.

"I would give in to your request but you also have to give something in return."

"I would do anything that you want, please save my wife and my daughter," Miguel pleaded, rubbing his hands together.

"Miguel Hughes, do you promise that when I revive your wife and your daughter, when your daughter clocks 20 years of age, you would make her get married to a werewolf?"

Miguel was shocked with the fact that she knew his name and he was more shocked with her request but he would do anything to bring his wife and daughter back to life.

"I promise to make my daughter get married to a werewolf when she clocks 20." He breathed. Thunder rumbled in the sky as soon as he made that statement.

The moon goddess crouched down next to Eva's lifeless body and placed her hand on her head before rubbing her belly with her delicate hands. She squeezed her eyes shut and mumbled some incoherent words that Miguel couldn't decode. As soon as she removed her hands from Eva's stomach, there wasn't any reaction from Eva whatsoever.

Miguel's brows furrowed in confusion as he glanced back and forth at the moon goddess and Eva. She stared at Eva's face and Miguel was starting to think that the moon goddess was fake or trying to play with his emotions.

He was about to ask about the reason why Eva wasn't responding to her touch until her eyes flicked open and she let out a sneeze.

His eyes widened as he stared at the miraculous moment that happened before him.

"Thank you, Thank you." He squeaked with delight.

"It's done! Don't forget your promise, I would remind you a day before she clocks 20." The moon goddess sauntered deep into the forest.
