Chapter 4

Author: Bowl of Rice
My chest burned with a sharp, heavy ache, and I let out a light laugh.

Right in front of both of them, I picked up the gift box and tossed it straight into the trash can.

"I don't want the gift.

"And I don't want the key, either."

I looked at Adrian and Maya one last time.

"As for the two of you, I don't want either of you anymore."

With that, I grabbed my bag, yanked open the apartment door, and walked out.

Adrian acted like he couldn't handle it anymore, chasing after me and yelling at the top of his lungs, “Emery, what exactly do you want? We've begged you this much, isn't that enough?"

I threw a cold look over my shoulder at him.

My heart had turned so cold I didn't even have words left to say, so I just kept walking.

After that day, Adrian and Maya didn't reach out to me again, not even through private messages.

In the three-person group chat, the two of them were still chatting up a storm, but my name was never brought up again. I didn't send another message either.

We just kept up this bizarre, heavy silence.

The day I resigned, I finished my final paperwork at the office and headed downstairs, ready to leave for the airport.

Seattle or anywhere else, I could go by myself.

Adrian was waiting for me downstairs with Maya, who was weeping.

I glanced over, planning to pretend I hadn't seen them at all.

I called an Uber but the two of them hurried right over to block my path.

The second Adrian opened his mouth, it was an immediate accusation.

"Emery, aren't you taking things way too far by doing this?

"Just because we had a fight, you have to ruin Maya's career out of spite? Call the vendor right now and make them withdraw their complaint."

Maya started sobbing and begging me too.

"Emery, I was wrong. My job was so hard to get, please just let this go.

"If that vendor keeps complaining, I'm actually going to get fired."

I stared right at them.

"I didn't tell anyone to do this. The mess she made at work isn't something I should have to clean up for her every single time. If she messed up, she needs to fix it and apologize. Standing here crying to me is completely useless!"

Hearing that only made Maya freak out even more.

She lunged forward, grabbing at my clothes as if she wanted to drop to her knees in front of me.

"Emery, I get it now. I'll make it up to you, I'll apologize. Do you want me to beg on my knees?

“Just let me off the hook. I promise I'll never talk to Adrian again. But I really can't lose this job. I don't want to go back home."

Adrian grabbed her and pulled her back up to her feet, the two of them stumbling and tangling together.

Once Maya managed to steady herself, Adrian glared at me with pure venom.

"Emery, have you completely lost your mind? Do you have to force all of us to crawl on the ground and beg before you're happy? Fix Maya's problem right now and give her a proper apology. Maybe we can still salvage this.

"Otherwise, there’s no way I'm marrying you!"

I suddenly burst out laughing.

"Then don't marry me."

With that, I pulled open the door of the Uber, slid inside, and the car sped away into the traffic.

In the rearview mirror, Adrian stood frozen in place, looking like he couldn't process that I was actually leaving.

Right after, he reached for his phone to call me, but Maya grabbed his arm and stopped him.

The two of them started tugging and pulling at each other again.

I looked away.

There was no pain left in my chest, only the heavy, clean weight of absolute release.

A little while later, Adrian sent me a few texts: [Where did you go?]

[Maya hasn't stopped crying. Her issue still isn't fixed. Where are you?]

[Emery, stop being so willful. Let's both just cool off. I'll come over to your place later tonight!]

Come over to my place? Where was he even going to look for me?

I smiled, shaking my head as I tucked my phone away, refusing to reply.

As I buckled into my seat on the plane, my phone buzzed with an incoming call from Adran.

He had probably just figured out that I had moved out.

I ignored the call, snapped a quick photo of the airplane wing outside my window, and posted an update to my feed: [Adrian and I have officially broken up. Please don't ask about it.]

Then, I put my phone straight into airplane mode.

None of it mattered anymore.

A relationship meant for two people was way too crowded when there were three.

From here on out, I would be walking this path alone.

Maya clutched the envelope tightly, suddenly wrapping her arms around me. She sobbed with deep, ragged heartbreak. It was as if she were trying to cry out all the grievances and regrets that had piled up over the years. She buried her face in my shoulder, her voice shook uncontrollably.Over and over again, she mumbled, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Emery, I'm sorry…"It wasn't until I went through all of this that I realized how good you were to me. Can we still…?""There’s no 'us' anymore."I calmly cut her off."From now on, it's just you and me."Gently but firmly, I pushed her away from my embrace, looking down at her tear-smeared makeup and her humbled, broken face."I hope you're happy in your new marriage, but that's where it ends."I won't stay for the banquet reception; I've got places to be. Goodbye."With that, I loosened my grip and turned to walk away.Just as I took a few steps, a familiar voice called out from behind me."Emery."It was Adrian.Maya let go of

For my next travel destination, I told no one.I went to Tibet. In that place closest to the sky, I witnessed the most devout prostrations and gazed at the towering, endless snow-capped mountains. Under the heavy red walls of the Potala Palace, I listened to the deep, resonant chanting and the turning prayer wheels.I suddenly felt that those lingering grudges over jealousy and betrayal were as insignificant as dust.I knew what I needed to do when I got back.Instead of returning to my hometown for a safe, steady job as my parents expected, I reorganized my resume and applied to cities much further away.About two years later, during an industry collaboration exhibition, I ran into an ex-colleague, Nicholas West, from my former company. We exchanged a few pleasantries and chatted about our current work.He suddenly brought up Maya."Do you remember that vendor complaint right before you left? The one Maya handled."I paused for a second, somewhat surprised. To be honest, I

"I've been crushed under your thumb for eighteen years! Eighteen years! Am I not allowed to fight for myself even once?"Maya pointed straight at my face, her tears mixing with spit."You've always had it so easy, always one-upping me at everything. But I'm doing pretty well for myself now, too! I've got a decent job, I've worked my way up to management, and I know how to dress. I can even recognize all those luxury designer brands you used to have lying around, the ones I couldn’t even name back then!"Why does everyone always like you instead of me?"I looked at her and didn't bother pulling any punches.I fired back. "Still don't get it? Because you're an ungrateful leech."Maya choked up, completely speechless.I didn't plan on stopping, pressing right on."You've been clinging to my back like a parasite, living off my blood and flesh. After taking all my help, you don't even remember a single good thing I did for you, and instead, you're always plotting to stab me in the

I never thought Adrian and Maya would actually track me down, probably after pressuring my parents to tell them where I was. When I pushed open the courtyard gate and saw the two of them standing there, I let out a heavy, helpless sigh, but still led them over to sit at the wooden table under the veranda.Adrian spoke up first."I'm sorry, Emery. I know I did a lot of things that upset you, and I've really done some reflecting."With that, he pulled a key out of his pants pocket and slid it across the wooden table toward me."I got this key back from Maya, and now it's yours."I'm going to keep a proper distance from her from now on and stop crossing any lines. Take the key, and when this trip is over, let's head back and get married and make it official. Okay?"As soon as he finished, Adrian turned sideways and gave a sharp nudge with his elbow to Maya, who had been sitting in dead silence beside him.Maya's complexion was awful, clearly showing how reluctant she was to have

Stepping off the plane in California, I switched off airplane mode.My phone screen immediately lit up with a flood of notifications. At the very top was Adrian, with a dozen frantic texts in a row.[Did you move? Why didn't you tell me? Where are you?][What’s that post on your feed supposed to mean? My parents are both calling and asking about it!][Emery, pick up your phone!]…I ignored every single one. Instead, for the first time in forever, I noticed a fresh message pop up in our three-person group chat.Adrian: [@Emery My mom is asking about us getting married again. Maya’s asking too. Why aren't you answering?]Right below it were two voice memos sent by Maya. Not wanting to listen to her voice, I tapped the button to automatically convert them into text.Reading between the lines, she was still putting on a weeping act.[If this really doesn't work out, I can always call Emery later and apologize...][It's all my fault.
