The group chat only had three people in it, yet every time I sent a message, no one responded. At first, I figured everyone was just busy. After all, Maya Reed and I had been best friends for eighteen years, and Adrian Pierce and I had been together for seven. Then came today. I dropped a message in the chat like I always did: [What if we all went to Seattle for the weekend?] Nothing. Silence all day. That night, Maya shared a reel of a cozy indie cafe in downtown Seattle. [Omg this place looks so cute!] Adrian replied instantly. Within seconds, the two of them were spamming the chat until the unread count hit 99+. I jumped in: [So are we going or what?] The chat went completely dead again. I scrolled back through the chat history. Yesterday I wrote: [Thinking about quitting my job. I’m just so exhausted.] No reply. The day before that, Maya posted a selfie with a text: [My skin looks terrible, I hate this.] Adrian replied a second later: [Stop it, you look gorgeous.] They flirted back and forth until midnight. I chimed in: [Wanna grab dinner tomorrow?] Silence. The very next evening, I walked into a diner downtown and caught them eating together. Last week, Adrian posted a movie trailer. Maya commented: [I wanna see that!] I replied: [Count me in too.] Neither of them responded. When I texted Adrian privately later, it turned out they’d already bought tickets and finished the movie together. They weren't too busy to reply. They just didn't want to reply to me. I didn’t leave the group chat. I didn’t type out a massive, dramatic paragraph demanding answers. I simply tapped the settings and muted the notifications. On the day I finally turned in my resignation, the chat pinged. Adrian: [@Emery My mom is asking about us getting married again. Maya’s asking too. Why aren't you answering?] I stepped off the plane, pulled up his message for the very last time, and typed back: [You two can keep talking without me.] [Happy breakup to us.]

Chapter 1

As I set the group chat notifications to mute, a text notification popped up at the top of my screen.

Adrian: [Can't take you to look at the new house this weekend, something urgent came up.]

I frowned.

[Is it that urgent? I worked so hard to get my time off shifted, and I have something important to tell you.]

My boyfriend of seven years, Adrian Pierce, never replied to me again.

I glanced at the group chat. He was still chatting up a storm with my best friend of eighteen years, Maya Reed, but apparently had no time to answer me.

Deciding not to make a fool of myself by asking again, I opened my laptop and started writing my resignation letter.

I was just exhausted and wanted to give myself a long break.

The next day, I went into the office to process my resignation. The vice president begged me to stay time and again, but ultimately agreed to let me leave two weeks later, heavyhearted.

I originally planned to mention it in the group chat, but as soon as I opened my phone, I saw Maya's latest post on her feed.

[Someone said I've been working too hard and decided to “kidnap” me for a break.]

The geotag was set at the airport, and she posted pictures of two plane tickets. The destination was Seattle.

I zoomed in on the photo. In the name field, one ticket read Maya, and the other, clear as day, read Adrian.

So, the urgent matter Adrian mentioned was taking a trip alone with Maya.

I tagged them both in the group chat.

[You guys went to Seattle? How come nobody told me?]

Just as expected, nobody replied.

I sent Adrian a private message: [Why are you traveling alone with Maya?]

Still nothing.

It wasn't until close to the end of the workday that Adrian finally dropped a casual excuse in the group chat.

[Just landed, we totally decided on this on a whim. Saw you were swamped with work lately so we didn't bother you.]

Followed by a snickering emoji from Maya.

When I got home, my landlord was already showing people the apartment. Seeing me walk in, she greeted me with a bright smile.

"Emery, congrats!" she said, "I heard moving out means you're finally moving into that new place with your boyfriend. Wait, was that your friend I saw here last time? She looked so annoyed whenever the topic of marriage was brought up. Is she worried about you moving so far away?"

I froze for two seconds, realizing the landlord was talking about Maya.

I bit my lip, completely lacking the energy to explain everything.

"No, I quit my job.

"Those two have a lot of nerve. We're not getting married anymore."
