Chapter 1

Author: Blaze Bamboo
The moment I walked over, Piper Wolfe and Cole Carter ripped away from each other.

Piper scrambled for a cover story, but her lie had been completely blown.

"I was just blowing sand out of Cole’s eye. You know how our connection works," she added, her voice shaky, "It feels awful for me when he gets stuff in his eye. You’re not starting another petty fight, are you?"

I just shook my head, my gaze coldly sweeping across Cole’s swollen lips. I reached out, grabbed Piper’s chin, pulled a tube of toothpaste out of my bag, and squeezed a thick glob directly onto her lips.

"Finn, what the hell are you doing?" she gasped, taking a step back, "How am I supposed to eat now?"

"Well, Cole’s lips look like someone really wrecked them," I said, letting the accusation hang in the air.

"Aren't you two physically connected? I just didn't want you to suffer, so I brought some toothpaste to cool the burn."

Before Piper could recover her composure, I kept pushing.

"Didn't you two swear off physical contact with other people? Since Cole broke the rule, does that mean you and I can finally kiss?"

Cole’s face darkened instantly, his eyes shooting daggers at Piper. "Don't you dare!"

I pulled out my lip balm, coated my lips, and stepped right into Piper’s space. "So, are we doing this or what?"

Piper shoved me away without a second thought. "There are people everywhere, don't you have any shame? Let's just go find a booth."

Whispers from the surrounding crowd invaded my ears.

"How pathetic," a girl murmured nearby, "Those two were practically devouring each other a second ago. They're clearly together. And he's standing there begging her for a kiss right in front of her boyfriend?"

"Predictable," another guy snickered, "Got shot down hard."

I stood glued to the floor, watching their backs as they walked away, fighting to drown out the burning stares pinned to my neck.

By the time I caught up, a group had already claimed their usual table.

Piper immediately nudged me toward them. "Go talk to that girl over there and ask if we can share the booth."

My hands balled into tight fists as I stared at her. "Why me?"

"You know why!" she scoffed, annoyed, "Cole and I share sensations. If some random girl touches him, gross, I can't handle that!"

Cole chuckled, leaning his weight casually on Piper’s shoulder. "The thought of Piper being touched by another girl is hilarious! So, you're our only hope, Finn!"

Even though I already knew she didn't care about me, I couldn't stop the question from spilling out. "Aren't you worried someone will hit on me, Piper? I'm your boyfriend."

Piper reached out and gave my nose a teasing pinch. "Don't be dramatic, silly. It's just a little harmless flirting, it's not like I'm going to break up with you over it. Just go."

People had a habit of paying attention to me. The moment I walked up to the booth, the girl took one look at my face and instantly agreed to let us sit.

Cole threw Piper a suggestive wink, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Damn, Finn's got pull. You hit the jackpot, Piper!"

Piper laughed right along with him. "Right? I had no idea Finn could be such a flirt. Guess I picked the wrong spots when we first started dating, sticking to quiet libraries and parks."

I clenched my teeth so hard my jaw throbbed, a sharp pain slicing straight through my chest.

The girl sharing the booth leaned in, curious. "So, who here is actually a couple?"

She gestured to a sign on the table. "The bar is running a couple's trivia challenge. Match ten answers in a row with your partner, and your entire tab is free."

Without a second of hesitation, Piper threw her arm around Cole's neck. "We're a couple!"

She leaned over to whisper in my ear, "Finn, Cole and I have that shared connection, so we're guaranteed to win. Just play along so we can get free drinks, okay?"

She didn't miss a single question, casually blurting out exact details about the most sensitive spots on Cole's body.

Meanwhile, the drink she ordered for me was a mango cocktail, the one thing I was violently allergic to.

I let out a bitter laugh, picked up every single glass on the table except the mango drink, and drained them one by one.

When the two of them finally came back to the table, arms draped over each other's shoulders, Piper froze. She watched me knock back glass after glass, looking bewildered.

"Finn, don't get the wrong idea," she stammered, "I only knew those answers because of the connection."

Cole cut in, loud and obnoxious. "Whoa, Finn! Did you drink all that just because you thought the tab was free?"

He smirked, shaking his head. "Too bad the deal only covers mine and Piper's drinks. You're stuck paying for your own stuff, man."

Piper grabbed the bottle sitting next to me. "You opened something this expensive?" she gasped, "If you get stuck washing dishes in the back to pay for it, don't expect me to stick around."

I looked at both of their smug faces and smiled. I gestured casually to the mountain of high-end bottles scattered across the table.

"You've got it wrong," I said smoothly, "All of these were sent over by other people in the bar."

I leaned back, meeting Piper's eyes. "So just like you, I'm not spending a single cent."

My bodyguard pulled me aside to report that Cole was demanding to see me."He says if you don't come, he'll raise complete hell right at the hospital until every patient gets scared away," the bodyguard said.I let out an exhausted sigh. "Why is he bothering me instead of Piper?"Still, to avoid making a huge scene, I headed down to the hospital under the excuse of checking up on our family's facility.Cole was sitting in the hospital bed, his face pale as a ghost. The second I stepped through the door, his eyes locked onto mine in a deadly, silent glare."Why are you staring at me?" I asked, completely baffled, "You're the one who dragged me down here."When he finally spoke, his voice was as rough as sandpaper. "Did you forbid Piper from coming to see me?"A sudden wave of pity washed over me. "I'm married now. Unlike you, I have no intention of entangling myself in Piper’s mess. My wife gets jealous easily, and she isn't exactly easy to smooth things over with when she's mad.

Piper rushed to my place. She waited out front the entire night, but I never showed up.When morning hit, she cornered my housekeeper right at the gate. "Where’s Finn?"The housekeeper gave her a bizarre look. "Mr. Finn is married. Naturally, he moved into the Callahans’ estate with Miss Mia."Piper gritted her teeth so hard it felt like her jaw would shatter. She truly hadn't believed I actually went through with the marriage, let alone to Mia.Determined, she tracked me down to the Callahans’ estate. When I walked out, she looked up at me, her eyes dead serious and filled with desperate sincerity."Finn, I swear to God, I’m never contacting Cole again," Piper pleaded, "I realized I don't feel a single thing for him anymore! That’s never happened to me before, and it’s all because I fell in love with you! I really love you!"The second the words left her mouth, Cole’s contact photo flashed across her phone screen.Piper’s expression darkened, and she slammed the decline button

The date stamped at the bottom of the ownership transfer paper was our one-year anniversary—the exact day I had forced myself to accept her ridiculous "soulmate connection" with Cole."Finn..."Piper’s voice shook, her whole body trembling. "I... I'm so sorry. I finally get it now, I see how much you loved me. Please, just give me one more chance, okay? I promise I'll treasure you this time."Mia stepped right in front of me, blocking Piper’s path. "Too late. Finn is my husband now.""What’s that supposed to mean?"Only then did Piper notice that I was wearing a wedding tux, standing hand-in-hand with Mia."Finn, did you play me? You never intended to marry me at all?""You brought this entirely on yourself, Piper."Piper scanned Mia up and down, her mouth twisting. "Her? Are you seriously telling me you didn't just pick her to spite me?"I kept my voice completely flat. "Mia is the sole heir to the Callahans’ medical empire, and she's one of the top cardiologists in the count

Mia and I were already making our rounds, clinking glasses with the guests, when Piper finally sauntered into the ballroom downstairs. She glanced at her family’s pitch-black faces and shrugged off the tension like it was nothing. "Sorry I’m late. Overslept."She rolled her eyes at the suffocating atmosphere. "Why is everyone so tense? Relax. Finn is head over heels for me. The second I say a few sweet words and act cute, he'll forgive me right away. It's not a big deal!"She scanned the grand ballroom. "Where's my groom?"A bodyguard stepped forward, holding the leash of a stray dog dressed in a tiny tuxedo, his face completely blank. "Here’s your groom."Piper grabbed the bodyguard by his lapels, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. "Who do you work for? Who gave you the audacity to insult me like this?!"She whipped her head toward her family, expecting them to step in.Not a single person said a word. Every single member of the family sat in heavy, suffocating silence.Th

Cole stared at me like I was a total idiot."You really think way too highly of yourself, don't you?" he sneered, "Every single guy Piper dates thinks he's the exception. Want to guess how that always ends?"He leaned back, looking completely relaxed. "They threatened to break up with her to make her cut me off, and Piper just agreed to split up right on the spot. Then, shocked that she was so ruthless, they come crawling back, harassing her endlessly. Go ahead. Give it a shot."So, I did.Under Cole’s smug, amused watch, I looked at Piper and broke up with her.Piper just laughed. "That’s three times now. This is the third time you've brought up breaking up. Fine, then. We're done."I turned on my heel and walked out without looking back. Behind me, Cole’s triumphant laughter echoed down the hall."Let's place another bet," Cole called out, "Bet you how many days it takes for him to come running back, begging for your forgiveness."Someone was definitely going to end up beggin

The taxi pulled up right outside the glass doors of the Plaza Hotel. The second Piper stepped out, she lunged toward Cole, throwing her arms around him and slamming her lips onto his. They stumbled through the main entrance, practically tearing each other's clothes off as they kissed.I had seen the gold keycard for the hotel’s penthouse suite sitting in Piper’s pocket earlier, so I didn't hesitate to trail right behind them. When I kicked the door wide open, they were hopelessly locked in an intense, breathless kiss.Piper didn't look shocked at all. If anything, a wave of relief washed over her face. She threw a jacket over her shoulders, leaning back against the edge of the bed with a lazy, bored look."So, you finally figured it out," she said, "Smarter than I thought."Cole didn't panic either. He smirked, looking over at her. "Where does he rank on the IQ scale compared to your other ex-boyfriends?"Piper actually paused to pretend to think about it. "Second to last. I can
