Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Three Two
As the flames spread, the smoke suffocated me, forcing me to the ground. My skin was being burned so badly that I could no longer feel the pain.

Sobbing uncontrollably, I crawled toward the front door with everything I had. "James, you useless fool! Don't you dare die here!"

If Wendy came back to a charred corpse, she'd never get over it for the rest of her life!

The comments that popped into my head frantically tried to guide me, "Blindie, over here! Crawl this way!"

I desperately crawled toward the direction the comments told me, but the smoke was simply too much. I slowly blacked out from asphyxiation.

When I came to, I was already in the hospital. Wendy showed up shortly after with Abel right behind her.

Wendy muttered, sounding completely drained, "I was only gone for a day. Why do you keep doing this to yourself?"

I nervously wrung my hands. "I'm sorry…"

A police officer harshly reprimanded Wendy, "What kind of guardian are you? How could you leave a blind man home alone? Do you know he almost died in that fire?"

I was about to defend Wendy when her bewildered voice sounded. "Could it be that every time I try to move forward with my life, you use reality to remind me that I can only be trapped by your side?"

Abel suddenly shouted, "James, you had me convince Wendy, then right when she was about to say yes, you pulled a stunt like this? You did this to make her feel guilty so she'd never leave you, didn't you?"

Although I couldn't see Wendy's bloodshot eyes, I still burst out laughing. "So what if I did? As long as my eyes don't recover, she has to stay by my side and be my guide dog for the rest of her life. Why else would I have brought her home?"

The crisp sound of a slap echoed throughout the entire ward. The force of Wendy's slap whipped my head to the side. I simply smirked.

Silly Wendy, why would your hands tremble if you were going to hit me?

"Wendy, trash like you has no business chasing dreams. I burned every painting you hid. You're not going anywhere!"

Right then, my phone rang. Mom's loud voice blared through the speaker. "I'll be at the apartment soon. Get your stuff ready and wait for me."

Before I could even answer, Wendy snatched the phone right out of my hand.

She then gripped my wrist tightly, seemingly overwhelmed by her emotions.

She screamed hysterically at me, "I really wish I had just died in the snow back then, James! It's been 20 years! I don't owe you anything anymore, you hear me?"

She yanked me right out of the hospital bed. The doctors tried to stop her. "He can't be discharged. His burns are very serious!"

No matter what they said, Wendy refused to let me go.

When we reached the entrance of our neighborhood, my mom, whom I hadn't seen in nearly a decade, had just pulled up.

Wendy dragged me over to my mom and shoved me forward.

Her voice carried a twisted sense of relief as she yelled, "Go with your mom and get as far away from me as you can! I hope I never have to see you again for the rest of my life!"

With that, she left. Deep down, I thought that I felt the same way.

I left with Mom. She kept her distance, looking at me like I was disgusting. "I only came because I'm your biological mother. You'd better keep your promise that I won't have to take care of you anymore after picking you up.

"And those injuries of yours have nothing to do with me. Your brother is in school and needs the money."

I simply smiled and wasn't upset. After all, the person who loved me the most had just given up on me today. "I won't, Mom. Could you drop me off at Corvial Park?"

That was where I found Wendy. The second we arrived, Mom dumped me and took off, terrified I'd cling to her.

There weren't many people around in the park since it was winter, so no one was around to yell at a blind guy for wandering where he shouldn't.

I just walked around aimlessly, letting the cold numb my burned body until I couldn't feel anything at all.

My head hurt so much. I thought I heard Wendy's weak cries for help coming from the snow. But then I remembered Wendy saying she didn't want to be saved by a blind guy.

I kept calling for help, but no one paid attention to me.

As Wendy's breathing grew quieter, I was overwhelmed with panic.

"I'm sorry, Wendy. It looks like this blind guy has to save you again."

I stumbled forward frantically, only for a barrage of comments to appear in front of my eyes.

"Don't cry, Wendy. Your eyes are too precious for tears."Wendy's tears came pouring out like a broken dam as she sobbed uncontrollably."James, you're the one who gave me my life. I don't have a home anymore. I just want to go home. It hurts so much. Where am I supposed to find my rib? I don't know, I really don't… I'm so sorry."She was rambling, but I understood what she was trying to say. She was just tired."It's okay, Wendy."Any sparrow would be exhausted if it had to spend its life looking after a blind companion.Just like when we were kids, I gently pulled Wendy into a hug, patting her back softly. "It's okay, Wendy. Don't be scared."Her sobbing slowly subsided. I gently wiped her face with a handkerchief. "Wendy, you should go back to your home. When I found you in the snow back then, I already told you that you can go wherever you want to go."I was like a cage to her. Locking her up for the rest of her life would simply be too much for her.Wendy covered her eyes

I stood there frozen, trash bag in hand, and let out a long sigh.Oh, Wendy, honestly…After Jessica ended the call, she turned around and caught my blank, unfocused stare. Her voice carried a hint of worry. "James…"I just smiled at her. "It's okay, Jessica. There's some pasta left. You should tell her to come up and have some."Wendy came upstairs, but she stood outside the door for a long time before she finally worked up the nerve to knock. I beamed in the direction of the door."You're here, Wendy! You must be starving. Come eat. Try out my cooking."I kept my tone super casual, as if she had merely gone to work and returned home like before. Wendy pulled out a chair before sitting down in silence. She stuffed the pasta into her mouth in big bites as her tears fell into the bowl. The whole time, I waited quietly for her to finish the food. Then I heard her voice, which was thick with sobs. "James, can a lost sparrow still find its way back home?"Even when she was abando

Other than Wendy, I'd never been this close to anyone before. I let Chris hold my hand as I stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do.This was supposed to be shy? I refused to believe that no one wanted to be friends with such a cute kid.Chris wasn't timid at all; he kept swinging my hand back and forth at my silence. "Please? Please? Just take pity on me."My face flushed bright red, and I stammered out an "okay". Chris beamed in response.Like I thought, "shy" was the last word to describe him. He had absolutely no fear of strangers.Every day, he'd show up at my door lugging bags of food Jessica made, feel his way inside, and plop himself right down on my couch. Most of the time, he did the talking while I listened.Chris would get pouty sometimes, too. "You never talk to me! If you don't want to be my friend, then I'm not talking to you either!"I panicked, my face turning red again. "No, that's not true. I do want to be friends, and I do like you."While grinning smu

Abel let out a laugh as he teared up. "Is this how James destroyed the artistic hands in you? How many more hands do you have left for him to ruin?"Did Abel hurt his hand because of me? The guilt hit me like a tidal wave, crushing me completely."I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I thought I could finally see a path ahead of me and wanted to walk along it. I didn't know… I didn't know he was—""That's enough! James, you're blind! What kind of path could you possibly have seen?" Wendy cut me off, her icy voice laced with disgust. Her voice came out strained and unrecognizable as she continued, "Wasn't ruining my ability to paint enough for you? Please tell me how many more people have to give up their futures because of you."I froze where I stood, trembling as I apologized over and over again. She was right. I was completely blind. How could I have possibly believed I could see?Wendy quickly brought Abel to the hospital. As she passed by me, she didn't say another word or even acknowle

I tried my hardest to open my eyes as wide as I could, hoping to see just a glimmer of something. But no matter how hard I tried, I still couldn't see a thing. And I could no longer see the comments in my head either. However, Wendy's familiar scent overwhelmed me, flooding my senses all at once.Confused, I took a deep breath, only to find that the familiar floral scent was still there.I lay there on the hospital bed, at a loss. "So I didn't die?"All of a sudden, Wendy grabbed me by the shoulders with such force that I felt like my bones were going to break.Nevertheless, she sounded as calm as still water as she uttered, "James, stop messing around. I'm not going anywhere anymore. I'm never leaving again."Her words made me feel like I was still submerged in that icy water, my heart becoming cold and heavy. My mouth felt dry as I parted my lips. "Wendy, I was never messing around. I was serious."I was serious about wanting to die.Wendy weakly squeezed my hand. "James, I

"He needs a skin graft," the doctor said.Wendy lowered her head blankly, rolled up her pant leg, and looked at the skin on her thigh. "Can my skin be used?"Abel rushed in at that moment. As he had feelings for Wendy and couldn't bear to see her talent being wasted, he just couldn't bring himself to leave."No way! Wendy, you said it yourself! You've paid back what you owed him, so why are you still hurting yourself for him?"You're a young woman! How could you give him your skin? Have you forgotten what he said? He only saved you back then so he could treat you like a guide dog!"Wendy's vacant gaze drifted over to him. "You know what? That day, I knew everything he said was a lie. So why did I let my anger get the better of me that day and decide to leave him?"The way Wendy looked at Abel was like she wasn't really seeing him. "Why did I have to be so stubborn that day?"Wendy pinched her thigh until it turned pale. She thought back to that day, to how happily she had been
