Ms. Moneybags

Chapter 1

Ms. Moneybags
I was at the hotel confirming tomorrow's wedding details when a video came in from an unknown number.

I opened it. Jade Bruckner was in it, wearing her wedding dress.

A pair of large hands gripped her waist. Her skin, usually pale as snow, had flushed a deep red. The dress's heavy, layered skirt hid most of what was happening, but by the end of the clip, the once-pristine gown was filthy and crumpled.

A message followed from the same number, needling me on purpose.

[So what if you two get married? I'm the only one she's ever loved.]

My vision went black for a second. Something closed around my chest like a net, cinching tight, and for a long moment I couldn't breathe.

The wedding coordinator must have noticed something was wrong with my face, because she asked carefully, "Mr. Thelen, just to confirm, the sneakers are what pair with the main gown for the ceremony, correct?"

I snapped back to myself, and almost laughed at how pathetic I looked.

While we were planning the wedding, Jade had complained to me, pouting, about having to wear heels all day, saying just the thought of it exhausted her. To spare her the pain, I'd had a custom pair of sneakers made to go with the dress.

I'd even, just minutes ago, worried her feet might still get sore and thought about adding an extra insole.

And what had she been doing?

Using a bachelorette party with her friends as cover, she'd been wearing the custom dress I'd designed for her, tangled up with the one who got away.

That dress had cost me a fortune, made just for her.

My chest kept seizing up in waves of pain. I gave the coordinator some garbled answer and drove home in a daze.

The living room was decked out for the wedding, festive and bright. Our engagement photo hung on the wall behind the couch.

The decoration seemed to burn my eyes.

I sank onto the couch, drained, and thought about the man in the video.

I recognized him.

His name was Preston Greaves, a senior from Jade's college days, the one she'd spent three years chasing and never quite caught.

Jade's friend had mentioned him to me once before, but I hadn't minded. Everyone has fond memories from their school days, don't they?

Besides, Preston was already married. That made him old history, someone who wouldn't come between us again.

I had Jade's present and her future. We were supposed to have a bright, sweet life ahead of us.

But now, this video had shattered that fantasy completely.

I dragged a hand down my face and called Jade.

She didn't pick up.

Probably still "busy."

I called my childhood friend, Kyle Harlow instead. He'd gone to the same college as Jade.

He picked up fast, teasing me. "You're getting married tomorrow, and you still have time for me?"

I got straight to the point. "I need you to dig up everything you can on Jade and a guy named Preston Greaves. The more detail, the better. I owe you one."

He caught the strange edge in my voice and asked, worried, "Did something happen?"

I didn't answer. I just hung up, exhausted.

Two hours later, he sent over dozens of messages, some of them just him trying to comfort me.

I skimmed past those and pulled out the one that mattered: a secret social media account belonging to Jade.

An account I'd never even known existed.

She posted on it constantly, and every single post was about Preston. It might as well have been a diary of their romance.

For his birthday, she'd bought him a mechanical keyboard, captioned: [A programmer's keyboard. Every line of code hides a little love.]

Preston had commented: [Message received. Shame my ball and chain's watching too close for me to come get it.]

Jade had replied underneath: [Boo hoo, come here and let me hug you.]

I stared at the photo, a keyboard with a metallic finish. That exact keyboard was sitting on my desk right now.

It was the Christmas gift Jade had given me.

I wasn't a programmer, but plenty of my work involved typing anyway. Her gift had felt like she'd known exactly what I needed.

I'd been touched beyond words at the time.

Turned out it was only mine because Preston hadn't wanted it.

I got up and peeled the sticker off the keyboard. Underneath, faint but legible, was a small engraved P.

I kept scrolling, and felt my heart go cold, inch by inch.

Kyle texted again. [Is the wedding still happening?]

I pressed my fingers to my brow, lost, and had no idea what to do.

In the end, Candace and I never got to spend Valentine's Day together.Something came up at the office that day, and I ended up working until two in the morning. But we did spend Thanksgiving together.A holiday built for togetherness. She volunteered to stay late at the firm that day, so I bought flowers and a gift and went to pick her up after work. The moment she saw me, her whole face lit up with surprise.I handed her the flowers. She blinked at me. "What's this supposed to mean?"She looked nervous and hopeful all at once, and under the streetlight, she looked unbearably endearing.I couldn't help myself. I reached out and ruffled her hair. "I think a good relationship should start with a bouquet of flowers and a thoughtful gift."I opened the gift box. Inside was the diamond-studded hair clip she'd mentioned wanting once, the one she'd always talked herself out of buying. She let out a soft gasp, her eyes going red.I took the clip out and pinned it into her hair, the

Candace picked out an elegant, pleasant French restaurant. But we got off to a bad start. The moment we walked in, we ran into Jade. She rounded on me, furious. "Who is this woman?"I kept my face cold. "What business is that of yours?"Jade's eyes reddened, tears rolling down in fat drops. "Tony, baby, you can't do this to me!""I know you love me. How could you be with another woman? I won't allow it. We're the ones who belong together. Tell me right now, who is this woman?"Before I could say anything, Candace burst out laughing."That's rich. While you were off fooling around with your loverboy, did it ever occur to you that Tony and I were actually a match?"Jade glared at her. "Shut up! This is between me and Tony. It's none of your business."Candace's mouth curved up. She lifted a hand and looped it through my arm. "I'm making it my business. What are you going to do about it?"Jade looked ready to tear her eyes out. "Let go of him!"She lunged forward to hit Candac

When I got to the Bruckners' house, Jade was holding a fruit knife against her own throat.Tears streaming, she begged, "Tony, baby, I really do love you. Without you, I might as well be dead."Can we get back together? Just like before, please."Her mother pleaded with me too. "What young person doesn't make mistakes? A good kid is one who can admit when she's wrong."You two have been together for years. Just forgive her this once, and the two of you can have a good life together."I ignored them both, staring at the knife hovering a few inches from Jade's throat. "Can't bring yourself to do it? Want some help?"Jade looked like she'd been struck by lightning.I made a move like I was actually going to step in and help. She dropped the knife immediately.I laughed coldly. "People who actually want to die don't make a show of it first. This is just theater."Jade sobbed so hard she could barely breathe. "You still love me, Tony, I know you do. How could you be this cold to me

I refunded every guest's gift money, sent everyone home, and took the groomsmen and Kyle out for drinks instead.Behind me, Jade screamed and sobbed like her heart was breaking. I didn't look back.I never found out how things ended between her and Preston. But after that day, the video of the two of them went viral across every social platform.A few small-time local influencers started ambushing her on the street, shoving cameras in her face without any shame."Everyone, look who we found, it's the real-life Thrill Queen! Send a rocket gift, and I'll slap her live on camera."Thrill Queen was the nickname netizens had given her, taken straight from her and Preston's own recorded conversation. The algorithm never misses. We'd shared such a deep connection once, so every post about her still found its way to my feed.Annoyed, I blocked the keywords, only for her call to come through the very next second. She was sobbing hard."Tony, baby, I was wrong, I'm so sorry, please for

Jade stared at me, stunned. "Tony, have you lost your mind? Think carefully. You only get one shot at this. Even if you get down on your knees and beg me later, I will never agree to marry you again."I laughed coldly. "Don't worry. That day's never coming."Jade looked at me like she'd just heard the most absurd joke of her life, except she couldn't manage to laugh.Because right as I said it, the big screen that was supposed to play our wedding montage started playing a different video instead: her and Preston. In it, still wearing the pure white wedding dress, Jade sat on Preston's lap, rocking against him.Their conversation was too filthy to listen to.Preston: "The night before your wedding, showing up in the dress your fiancé designed for you with his own hands. Does that get you off?"Jade: "Don't ruin the mood by bringing up that loser."The sounds of their moaning filled every corner of the hall. The whole room erupted. Guests started whispering among themselves.

I didn't sleep at all that night.I downloaded every photo and video the unknown number had sent me, then cut them together with screenshots from Jade's secret account into a single video.I dug up Preston's information, found his wife's phone number, and called to invite her to the ceremony. Then I reached out to the most-followed local livestreaming platform and paid them to broadcast my wedding live.By the time I finished, the sky had gone fully bright.I drove to the hotel. When I arrived, Jade was already in hair and makeup. Her face looked awful, like she hadn't slept. The moment she saw me, her expression turned cold. "What took you so long? Do you have any idea I didn't sleep a wink last night, all because of you?"Because of me?I said nothing.I didn't even feel like exposing her lie.She must have sensed something was off, because her tone softened."Why aren't you saying anything? I know I snapped at you just now, but I'm just really nervous; it's my first wedd
