Chapter 1

Author: Moore
I had given Jacob Fulton 99 chances. For five long years, I truly believed he was my fated mate.

Now, I was finally ready to walk away and return to my pack to fulfill my duty.

Hearing that I was heading back, my Alpha father, Lennon Conner, called immediately. "Wendy, you've finally come to your senses? You're leaving that arrogant patrol captain?"

Tears slipped down my cheeks.

When I first fell for Jacob, I broke ties with my family just to be with him.

Back when I arrived at the Silverfang pack, Jacob was nothing more than an ordinary patrol guard.

I remembered how remorseful he looked when he told me, "Wendy, I'm just a low-ranking guard right now, but I'm going after the captain's seat. The day I take that seat will be the day we become mates. I'll mark you before the Moon Goddess."

Patrol missions were lethal, with casualties almost every day.

The first time Jacob was injured, I stayed up all night, sick with worry.

So, I threw myself into learning healing techniques and potion-making, joining his team just to treat his wounds.

With me shielding his back, Jacob fought recklessly at the front lines, pulling off every mission flawlessly.

In just one year, he stood out from the rest and officially became the patrol captain.

I thought our bonding ceremony was right around the corner, but Jacob just held me tight and said in a voice heavy with fatigue, "Wendy, I fought my way here, but I've never led a whole team.

"I don't know if I can handle this. If I bond with you now, I'm scared I won't be able to give you the future you deserve."

He had looked down into my eyes and promised sincerely, "Once I secure my place, I'll give you a bonding ceremony like no other."

So, I waited again and joined his team as their dedicated healer.

From that moment on, I wasn't just Jacob's personal healer. I became the anchor for the entire team.

By day, I braved dangerous territories alongside them. By night, I stayed up researching antidotes and healing potions, bringing guards back from the brink of death no matter how severe their injuries were.

Under my care, the Silverfang pack's patrol team achieved an unprecedented milestone—five consecutive years without a single casualty.

Jacob became the youngest, most celebrated patrol captain the pack had ever seen.

The Alpha himself awarded him the highest honor.

Yet, Jacob never mentioned the bonding ceremony again.

In the end, I was recalled by my pack elders before I ever got the promise he owed me.

"Yes, Dad. I'm coming home to fulfill my duty," I said.

Dad sighed softly over the line. "I'll send an escort for you in three days. Don't worry, sweetheart. I'll find you the finest match out there."

When Jacob returned from his patrol, I was already packing.

Everything that belonged to me was neatly packed away into two massive suitcases.

Jacob fell silent for a moment, then rubbed his temples in exhaustion. "Wendy, what are you playing at now? Yelena cried all day because of your nonsense. Hand over your position as the team healer to make it up to her."

I looked up, stunned. "Jacob, are you serious? How could someone with her skills ever be the team healer?"

Two years ago, Jacob had begged me to help his childhood friend, Yelena Shaw.

She had married an abusive werewolf who beat her daily.

When she finally found a chance to escape back to the pack, she ran straight to Jacob for help.

Pitying her situation, I took her under my wing and taught her everything I knew about healing without holding anything back.

But Yelena was only interested in slacking off.

To this day, she couldn't even brew a basic poison antidote.

Jacob's expression darkened instantly. "Yelena might be a little clumsy, but she's a certified healer! Do you really have to tear her down like this?"

I almost laughed out of sheer frustration. Everyone knew Jacob bought the exam answers at a ridiculous price just to pass her through the certification.

Fearing for the team's safety, I tried to reason with him. "Yelena has never treated anyone on her own, Jacob. You can't gamble the crew's lives on her—"

"Enough! Wendy Conner, do you think you're the best healer in the pack? That no one can match you?"

I froze. "No, I never said—"

"This team can run fine without you!"

He glared at me and spat out every word with cold finality, "Starting today, Yelena is the patrol team's healer. Anyone who has a problem with that can get the hell out."

The Darkmoon pack was making preparations for the coronation ceremony, and a brand-new chapter of my life was about to begin.Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, the Silverfang pack presented a far more miserable picture. The lives of Jacob and his patrol team had long plummeted into an abyss.Having lost all combat strength, Jacob and every guard who consumed the potion were reduced to useless invalids. The once proud and accomplished elite patrol team ultimately became the laughingstock of the entire pack.Unwilling to feed freeloaders, the Alpha officially stripped them of their ranks and banished them from the territory.Having lost their titles and glory, they were left with absolutely nothing. The once-arrogant captain was now reduced to a pitiful state.Left with no other options, Jacob could only swallow his pride and lead the team in forming a low-level mercenary group to take on hired jobs.Without decent employment, they drifted from place to place, taking on strenu

Jacob stood in the empty room, completely dazed. He refused to believe I had left.In his eyes, I had no family, no backing, and nowhere else to go in this world except by his side. How could an escort team possibly come all this way just to pick me up?Besides, for all these years, my entire world had revolved around him. I had always been the one chasing after him.Jacob was convinced I loved him, relied on him, and that even if we fought, I was only acting out. I would never actually leave. At that thought, he rubbed his tired temples and dragged his heavy feet toward my bedroom.Pushing the bedroom door open, Jacob instinctively walked over to the wardrobe and pulled the doors open.It was completely bare—not a single piece of my once tightly packed clothing remained.Jacob's chest tightened. A wave of panic and unease washed over him.Refusing to accept it, he carefully searched every single corner of the room, obsessively looking for any tiny trace I might have left behi

A few days later, after his external wounds healed, Jacob returned to the patrol team as scheduled to resume his duties.Yet, during his very first patrol, he immediately sensed that something was deeply wrong. In the past, with just a single thought, his wolf would instantly respond, flooding him with raw power and battle readiness.Today, no matter how many times he tried to awaken it, there was only dead silence deep inside his body. His wolf didn't react at all, as if it had vanished into thin air.Panic surged through him instantly. Unable to focus on anything else, Jacob rushed straight to the pack clinic for an emergency checkup. When the final diagnosis was handed to him, Jacob went completely still, as if struck by lightning. The healer looked at him and said seriously, "Captain Fulton, your wolf is completely destroyed. You will never be able to shift or fight again."Those few short words stabbed right into Jacob's heart like a serrated blade. He was the strongest p

Suffocating rage spread wildly through the pack clinic. The wounded guards were boiling with hatred. They had ended up as useless Omegas, all because Yelena took it upon herself to tamper with the antidote formula. The guards struggled to their feet one after another, determined to confront Yelena and demand justice.Inside the treatment room, facing the tidal wave of public condemnation, Yelena didn't panic in the slightest. With red-rimmed eyes, she put on a picture of complete innocence and sobbed. "I admit that the potion I mixed might have had some unforeseen risks."She pivoted instantly, her voice dripping with sheer victimhood. "But my only intention was to find a faster way for everyone to heal."As she raised her tear-stained face, her voice trembled softly. "I know all of you hate me, and I'm consumed with guilt. But Ms. Conner taught me the foundational formula for that potion."I merely made minor tweaks based on the principles she passed down. I just want everyone

The moment I left, the guards who had downed the potion began feeling its effects almost instantly.Callan, the first to drink, let out a long breath as a look of pleasant surprise washed over his face. "The poison inside me… feels totally gone! My body feels so light all of a sudden!"He stretched his shoulders and let out an amazed gasp. "It really doesn't hurt at all anymore. Yelena, your potion is mind-blowing!"The rest of the guards were overjoyed, swarming around Yelena and showering her with praise."Yelena, you're incredible! Your modified formula works ten times better than the old one!""You've got real talent! This antidote kicked in instantly!""Wendy's formula was way too conservative. The results were painfully slow. She can't hold a candle to you."Yelena stood in the middle of the crowd, putting on a coy act while barely hiding the smugness in her eyes. "I just wanted to help everyone recover faster, that's all.""Yelena, don't be so modest!" Callan shouted. "W

By the time I rushed back to the patrol station, I could hear the team's excited chatter from down the hall."Yelena, you're incredible! I can't believe you whipped up a brand-new antidote so fast.""With you backing us up, we're definitely in safer hands from now on."Yelena stood right in the center of the crowd holding the vials with a modest smile on her lips. "Ms. Conner did a great job before, but I just wanted to take some weight off her shoulders."Blair was shoved into a corner, tear tracks still visible on her cheeks. She'd clearly suffered a great deal.Spotting me first, she jogged over and hurriedly handed me one of the vials. "Wendy, Captain Fulton already convinced everyone to switch to Yelena's new formula. They all think she's way more gifted than you."It only took one glance for me to spot something terribly wrong. The liquid was much darker than the standard antidote, and the sharp, familiar herbal scent made my brow furrow tightly. "This contains frostleaf."
