KATHLEEN

I finished the chicken leg without tasting a single bite.

The second it went down, I stood there waiting and watching him eat so comfortably after he had seen me eat mine.

Instantly, something started shifting inside me. I just knew it was finally over for me. I began feeling sweaty on my scalp, and my body was covered in goosebumps.

A strange hot heat began blooming low in my stomach, slow at first, then spreading. My skin felt too tight. My clothes suddenly felt rough against me.

KATHLEENBy the time the clouds turned bright, I had made up my mind about one thing.Whatever this day held, I would get through it quietly. Head down, mouth shut, eyes on the floor. I had survived Casper and Bloodcast and the council hall. I could survive a palace that wanted me gone, as long as I gave it nothing to hold against me.I washed my face, pressed a damp cloth to my split lip. Now I wished I had a wolf, I could’ve just healed on my own. Someone knocked, three soft taps."My lady? It is only me."Sheba entered, as she took one look at me and her eyes went from my swollen cheekbone."Goddess." She shut the door behind her and lowered her voice. She hadn’t been in this room since last night. I assumed she was running an errand for the Queen. "I heard Marta in the laundry this morning. She said Ladies Amira and Elmira stopped you in the corridor. She said they tore your gown in front of the guards."My hands still, as I walked passed her to the mirror to fix my hair. I igno

AURORA "She always had that look about her," Elmira said. "The look of a girl who means to take over the Queen's position. I said so the day she arrived."I turned that over.Elmira had said it from the first week. I had dismissed it then as her usual venom, the way she disliked every new face that came into the palace. But I thought now of Kathleen standing at his bedside with her hand in his, head lowered, not a flicker of triumph in her face. Not once had she looked at me with defiance. Not once had she asked for anything. And somehow that was the worst thing about her. The humbler she looked, the more dangerous she seemed. A girl who wanted nothing was a girl who had already been given everything."I tested him tonight." My fingers curled into the blanket. "I told him to let her go. I told him we could find another girl. Do you know what he said?" I turned to look at my sisters. They shook their heads. My voice shook. "He looked me in the face, in my own presence, and said he

AURORA The moment his arms lifted me, my stomach turned. I told myself it was nerves. I told myself it was only the shock of being held after so long. But the fur along his forearm brushed my wrist, coarse and warm, and the scent of him rolled over me, wild and heavy, nothing like the cedar and sweet mint I had once buried my face in. ‘Hold on,’ Aurora. You promised you would try.’ He laid me on the bed with a care that made my throat ache. His eyes searched mine, gold and hopeful, and I forced my mouth into something like a smile. The kiss had been brave. I had thought that if I could only get through the kiss, the rest would come. Then his hands went to the ties of my gown . Claws. Those were claws, curling at the edges of his fingertips, dark and curved and gentle only because he was holding them back. A cold shudder tore through me, and before I could stop it, my head was shaking. "No." My hands flew up and shoved at his. "No. Stop." He froze. I saw it happ

SABASTIN "I did not ask for this. The curse, the blood, her. None of it was my choosing. Casper did this to me, and I am only trying to survive it." I kept my voice low, the way you would speak to a wounded animal.Aurora refused to look at me."The more she is near me, the more the curse knows her. Perhaps that is why her blood heals me. It has grown used to her.""That is not an excuse, Seb." Her voice trembled, turning to face me with a tear filled gaze."No. But if you had not left me alone with it since the day you woke—"I stopped, too late. The words hung in the air.Her gaze snapped to me, her face going white, then red. "You are not blaming me." She shook her head in refusal. "Aurora——“ I tried to reach out to her."You are not blaming me." Her voice broke across the room. "I just woke from a coma, Sebastian. I opened my eyes, and everything I knew was gone, and you want to tell me this is because I was afraid?"I closed my eyes. Cruel. It had been so cruel. I had sat besid

SEBASTIANThe door closed behind her, and the warmth went out of my hand. Her scent was still on my palm. Iron and honey and the faint, sharp trace of fear, so close I could have followed it through any corridor in the palace.Somewhere beneath my ribs, my Lycan lifted its head and turned toward the door.‘I feel nothing for the King.’I had heard the words. I had also heard her pulse, stumbling and too fast beneath them, a Lycan's cruelty I had never once been able to switch off. She had lied to protect us both, and I had let her, and the knowledge sat heavy in my chest. But what if she was right? What if she truly didn't feel anything for me? What if all of this, she was doing against her own will, because she was scared for her life?Did she even have a choice?Sadness filled my heart as I forced my gaze away from the door.Aurora did not move. She stood at the foot of the bed with her back rigid, staring at the place where Kathleen had been, and I watched her fingers curl into

KATHLEEN"Leave us." Aurora did not raise her voice. She never needed to.Alaina hesitated by the wall. "My Queen, the King has only just—""Woken. Yes, I saw." Aurora's eyes stayed on our joined hands. "Fin. Tarry. Take the healer. Lady Alaina, you as well."They bowed and filed out one by one. Alaina was last, and as she passed she squeezed my shoulder, quick and hard, an apology and a warning in the same touch. The door closed with a soft click that sounded far too loud.I should have pulled my hand away. Every rule I had ever learned told me to. But his fingers were locked around mine like the iron on his wrists, and my body had not yet decided whether to obey him or the Queen.Aurora crossed to the bed, her robes wiping the floor. She studied the chains, the dark fur along his forearms, the blood drying on my palm."Why her blood?" she asked him."I do not know," Sebastian said. "No one does."She did not answer him. She turned and looked at me instead, and I felt the weight of
