The first memory I ever lost was of a girl holding my hand while a building burned around us.

I remembered her eyes.

That was the part I could not get rid of.

Everything else came in pieces.

Smoke crawling along the ceiling. Red lights pulsing through a corridor. Someone shouting behind a locked door. My bare feet against a floor so cold it hurt. A woman screaming for us to keep moving.

Then the girl.

Small.

Terrified.

Her fingers locked around mine.

Jack.

She had called me Jack.

No one called

I looked at Richard and said, “She knew the genetic condition was fake.”“Yes.”My anger rose instantly.“Then why did she use it?”Richard’s eyes moved to my stomach.“To stop this.”Jaxon moved so fast I barely saw it.One second he was beside me.The next, his fist connected with Richard’s face.Bennett shouted.Richard staggered backward into the doorway. The men outside reached inside their coats.Bennett’s agents aimed immediately.“Hands!”Everything exploded into movement.I grabbed Jaxon’s arm.“Jaxon!”He tried to move again.I held tighter.“Don’t.”“Let go.”“No.”“Rory.”“You hit him once.”“He deserves more.”“I’m sure he does.”Richard straightened slowly.Blood appeared at the corner of his mouth. He lifted one hand toward the men outside. They stopped. No weapons drawn.Interesting.Richard wiped the blood with his thumb. Then looked at Jaxon.“I deserved that.”“Don’t agree with me.”Richard almost smiled. That made Jaxon move again.I planted myself in front of him.

I had imagined meeting Jaxon’s dead father before, but in none of those versions did he begin by objecting to our unborn child. For several seconds, nobody moved.Rain came through the open doorway behind Richard Kane, blown sideways by the wind and landing in dark spots across the wooden floor. Four men stood farther back in the driveway. I could see another vehicle beyond them, headlights cutting through the rain.Jaxon stood directly in front of me.Completely still. That frightened me more than if he had shouted.I knew his anger.I knew what it looked like when his jaw locked and his shoulders tightened and every word became so controlled that the control itself was a warning. This was different. His father had been dead for fifteen years.Except he wasn’t.Apparently, death had become more of a suggestion than a permanent condition for the people involved in our lives.Richard’s eyes stayed on Jaxon.“You weren’t supposed to get her pregnant.”Jaxon laughed. One short sound. The

I laughed once. The sound hurt me. Still, I managed to say, “I asked him to help me.”“Jaxon.”“He told me to be still.”Rory’s eyes filled.I looked away.I could survive anger.Pity would kill me.She knew that too.“I’m not feeling sorry for you,” she said.I looked at her.“I’m deciding which dead man I want to kill first.”A breath escaped me.Almost a laugh.Almost.Her hand found mine again.I held it.Mara rubbed her throat.“Richard believed he was protecting you.”I looked at her.“Choose your next sentence carefully.”“He believed Voss could fix something.”“What?”Mara hesitated.I took one step toward her.Rory stayed beside me.“What?”“You.”The word landed softly. That made it worse.“There was nothing wrong with him,” Rory said.Mara looked at her.“I did not say there was.”“You said his father wanted Voss to fix him.”“Yes.”“What did he think needed fixing?”Mara looked at me.“The same thing Evelyn eventually told Rory was genetic.”My entire body went cold.Rory

My father had used it exactly twice that I remembered, both times before I was old enough to understand why hearing affection from him felt more frightening than anger. But the girl had said it differently.Like she knew me.Like she had said it a hundred times before. And now that girl was standing ten feet away from me with a gun in her hand.Cruz stared at me.“What did you call me?”The house had gone silent after Voss spoke. The anchor rememb

“You should have stayed away,” Mara said.Voss laughed softly and said, “My dear, I never left.”The connection then died. The house became silent.Mara pulled free of Bennett.“We have to go.”I stared at her.“Down?”“Out.”My disbelief turned almost violent.“You have spent the last hour telling us everything is underneath us.”“And now I am telling you to leave.”“Jaxon is there.”“If Voss has started memory induction, Jaxon is safer without you near him.”My entire body tightened.“What did you say?”Mara stopped.“Memory induction.”“What is that?”She looked at Cruz.Cruz’s face had gone pale again.“Artificial recall,” Bennett said quietly.Mara nodded.“Triggered sensory reconstruction. Sound. Light. Temperature. Pattern recognition. Sometimes chemical assistance.”Lila whispered, “The quiet.”“Yes.”“The rooms going quiet.”“Yes.”“That’s what they were doing?”“At first.”“At first?”Mara looked at her.“Later, you learned to do it yourself.”Lila’s expression changed. She

The worst thing Jaxon had ever asked me to do was stay away from him, and for once, I was absolutely certain I would disappoint him.The darkness beneath the staircase swallowed the last of the red light. For several seconds, no one moved.Voss had stopped speaking. The house had stopped trembling.Even the strange pressure beneath my skin seemed to have drawn itself inward, gathering somewhere behind my ribs as if my body understood something my mind had not caught up with yet.Jaxon was down there. That was the only fact I could hold.Everything else had become noise.Twenty-three subjects. Six underground levels. Clara’s recording. Mara’s warnings. Elena’s lies. Cruz remembering a fire she supposedly had never seen. Voss calling her by name like he had been waiting twenty years for the chance to say it again. All of it could wait.Jaxon could not.I stepped toward the stairs.Bennett caught my arm.“Rory.”I looked down at her hand. Then at her.“Move it.”Her fingers loosened but

By six in the morning, I had cleaned my apartment twice and hated myself for the third time before sunrise. The kitchen counters were spotless. The living room rug had been vacuumed so aggressively it probably needed therapy. I had rearranged the throw pillows, wiped down the windows, scrubbed the

By six forty-three, I had tried on six outfits and hated every single version of myself. The black dress made me look like I was attending a funeral which, to be fair, was close enough. The red one looked like I was trying too hard. The jeans said I had not tried at all. The cream blouse looked too

My back slammed into the boards so hard the whole rink seemed to crack open. For one blind second, all I heard was the thunder of my own body hitting glass, the sharp scrape of skates and the distant shout of someone calling my name. My helmet flew off, skidding across the ice like a useless piece
