Mag-log inClayton Amos finally agrees to marry me during my fifth year as the antagonist of a novel. On the day of my wedding, the chandelier in the middle of the hall suddenly snaps and falls. At the most critical moment, he shoves me aside and runs over to protect Gladys Dawson, the protagonist of the novel, and his first love. Clayton's arm is slashed as a result, and blood pours out of the wound, dyeing his pristine white suit red. Meanwhile, Gladys remains unharmed in his arms. I hold a hand against the bleeding wound on my neck and finally accept the fact that Clayton never loved me. This is when the system appears and asks me, "Hailey Paltrow, would you like to abort your mission now?" I nod in silent response. "Since he's going to end up losing all four of his limbs and ultimately wish for death, I'll let him have it."

It was late afternoon when I wrote my last exam of the third year. I waited outside for my friend Chloe and her boyfriend, Alex, feeling lighter than I had in months.
Next year would be my last year.
For someone like me, I had to give it my all. I didn’t have enough money to pay for my education, so I made sure my grades stayed high enough to qualify for a scholarship.
Chloe had been studying on a scholarship since she started university, but she failed several classes, and the scholarship stopped providing financial assistance. Alex had been paying her tuition ever since.
Alex appealed to me. He had money, and he took care of Chloe. They’d been together since their second year, and they adored each other. Alex’s parents adored Chloe too—honestly, sometimes it felt like they adored her more than their own son. When those two argued, his parents always sided with Chloe.
I hoped I could find someone like Alex someday.
He was kind. And, God, he was sexy. Like very sexy!
Chloe and I grew up together at the orphanage. We were both booted out when we turned eighteen. We stuck together after that, but when Chloe turned nineteen, Alex moved in with her. Now I had the place to myself while I studied and worked part-time.
Chloe called out, “Hey, Gaby!” She walked up with Alex beside her.
Before I could even say hello properly, she said, “We’re going out tonight for cocktails. We need to celebrate. Next year is our last year, and I’m not taking no for an answer. I’ll pick you up at six.”
She didn’t even let me speak.
I took a taxi to the garage, worked for four hours, and then went home. I showered, did my makeup, and kept it simple. I always tried to look natural. Then I put on the dress and high heels Chloe demanded.
At 5:45 p.m., she texted me.
Chloe: Are you ready, bitch?
Me: I’ll be down in five minutes.
When I walked toward Alex’s car, both Chloe and Alex looked completely taken aback.
Alex’s eyebrows lifted. “Can you tell me where you’ve been hiding that ass?”
Alex was more like an older brother to me, and Chloe was more like a sister. He was a part-time student and worked for his father’s firm. He was five years older than us, but somehow we still ended up in the same classes. As protective as they were of me, they also pushed me to find a boyfriend of my own.
Chloe leaned closer and smirked. “I think you’re going to get laid tonight.”
“Oh, please shut up.”
I grinned anyway, poor, pathetic me. I’d never seen a man naked. I’d never even kissed one. Sex? Not even close.
Alex drove us to a club that was massive, all lights and noise and bodies. He escorted us into the VIP section he’d reserved. Chloe ordered several drinks, and whatever she picked was sweet and dangerously delicious. I could barely taste the alcohol.
She grabbed my hand. “Come on, Gaby. Let’s get this party started on the dance floor.”
We made our way through the crowd. The DJ was playing Sia’s “Unstoppable.” I could feel people looking at me, and it made my skin prickle.
I glanced around and immediately got irritated.
Chloe and Alex were already kissing.
I backed away and headed to the bar. I felt stiff and out of place. The dance floor seemed reserved for couples, and I didn’t have one.
I drank quickly, staring at the bartender as the sweetness hit my tongue. It tasted amazing, but I wanted something stronger.
“I want something strong,” I muttered, setting my glass on the bar.
“I can give you a tequila shot,” the bartender offered.
“Sure. Give it to me.”
I leaned forward as he shoved a lemon at me. “How do you take this?” I asked, grinning.
“Gulp it down.” I did, and the tequila burned all the way down.
“One more.” I set the tiny glass down again, and he poured another. I drank that one too, then scanned the room like I was hunting for something.
I wanted to twerk. I’d always been a twerking monster, and tequila had just unlocked that part of my brain like it owned the place.
I went back to the dance floor, not caring anymore whether it was “for couples.” I started moving, wobbling my ass to the beat, and I could feel eyes on me again.
For some reason, being watched only made me go harder.
Is this what they mean by sexual desire?
I laughed out loud.
A body pressed against mine as I swayed. I almost turned around to tell whoever it was to fuck off until a hand grabbed my ass.
And instead of getting angry… I wanted more.
I wanted him to grab the other butt cheek too.
My pussy throbbed in the crotch of my thong from that one touch. I froze for half a second, stunned by my own reaction. No one had ever grabbed my ass before. I didn’t know what to do with the feeling.
Our bodies moved together in the music. I followed his lead without thinking. He took my hand, and a shiver ran up my spine.
Then he whirled me around.
My back hit his chest. He pulled me close, then shoved my ass against his crotch. I rolled my hips to the beat, grinding lightly against him.
What am I doing?
I shook the thought off because I didn’t want to stop.
He spun me again, still holding my hand, and this time I faced him.
He was tall, with dirty-blond hair and ocean-blue eyes. The way he looked at me like he could see straight through me made my stomach flip. I couldn’t pull my gaze away.
He was a stunning man.
Broad shoulders. Solid muscle. The kind that didn’t look exaggerated, just powerful, like it belonged there. A tattoo curled over his shoulder, disappearing where I couldn’t see it. I couldn’t even tell where it started.
He looked older. Nine, ten… maybe even eleven years older than me.
I didn’t mind.
He said something, but my brain lagged behind his voice.
“Mind getting some more drinks, baby girl?”
I blinked, still trying to process him. He swallowed and cleared his throat, and I realized I’d been staring too long.
“Huh?”
He smirked. “Come on. Let’s go have some drinks.”
“Yeah. Sure.”
Then Chloe’s voice cut through the moment.
“You have to get laid tonight and lose your virginity!”
She sounded drunk. Heat rushed to my face. I glanced at him, mortified. “I’m so sorry about my friend. Please ignore her.”
“It’s okay.” He leaned closer, still smiling. “Let’s go get drinks… or do you want to get out of here?”
I said nothing in reply. A long while later, Clayton reached into his pocket and retrieved a ring that he had forged again.I took a closer look at it and saw that he even had my name engraved inside the band."It's been three years, and I've been carrying this ring around with me ever since. I told myself that I would slide it back onto your finger if I ever saw you again."I kept regretting the fact that I hadn't been able to sort out my feelings for you back then and forced you to leave me."Lately, I keep recalling the past. Right at the beginning, when I stabbed you near the heart, you never even moved to avoid me. Instead, you kept telling me that you were worried about me."And then, we did a lot of things together. You even insisted on searching for me all day and night after I got into a huge accident during the race. I would have died then if it weren't for you."Tears began falling from his eyes and trickling down his cheek. However, I wasn't fazed in the slightest.
I couldn't believe my eyes. I was really looking at Clayton again. The first thing he did to me as soon as we met again was to pick me up from the ground despite my protests. He brought me to a secluded area with nobody else in sight. He held onto both my wrists with one hand and kept repeating some mantra under his breath multiple times.I didn't know what was going on, so I kept struggling against him, trying to shake him off. However, a long time passed, and still, nothing happened.I was still standing there in front of him.Clayton's eyes turned bright red as he yelled into the air, "Why? Why isn't it working? You freaking lied to me!"A voice that sounded a lot like that of my own system spoke up and said, "I told you that it's useless unless she willingly wants to go back with you."I managed to make sense of the situation based on their short conversation with each other. Clayton must have made a pact with his system, giving him a chance to bring me back into his world
Hailey's POVAfter I returned to my own world, I immediately got rid of my habit of reading novels in my free time.I was so worried that I would develop feelings for the characters in the novels again and end up transmigrating into the novel as the antagonist or some other pitiful character once more. Some time later, I heard one of my friends, Pattie Jensen, bring up that specific novel again. But this time, Clayton's and Gladys' stories had changed.Clayton was madly in love with Gladys at the start of the novel, but only until a new character named Hailey Paltrow appeared.Pattie sighed and said, "Look, the character doesn't just share your name. I think her personality is a lot like yours, too!"I felt my heart squeeze. However, I pretended to be calm about it."That's quite a coincidence. I never thought that I could be a side character in a book."Yet, Pattie kept chirping as she continued reading the novel. Over time, Clayton came to see that what he believed he felt
Clayton's POVClayton was feeling unsettled, but he didn't know why exactly. The longer he stayed, the more uneasy he felt. Thus, he hurriedly grabbed his coat and decided to go home.Gladys couldn't help herself and stopped him from leaving. "What's the matter?"Clayton didn't want to waste time talking to her. He had already finished all the food that Gladys brought for him, and he just wanted to get home now as quickly as possible. After all, Hailey was still waiting for him there.Feeling restless, he retrieved his phone and pulled up the home surveillance feed, soon realizing that nobody was around. Hailey was gone; not even her shadow remained.Clayton's heart began thumping wildly in his chest. He suddenly felt as though something important was about to leave him.Gladys spoke up, trying to get him to stay."Clays, are you really going to abandon me and leave me alone here? Would you really do that? If so, I'm going straight home right now."Gladys was still confident
Sometime in the middle of the night, I looked at my neck in the mirror and couldn't help touching it.It had been a full day, and my injury had been in plain sight, but Clayton never even noticed it. It was as if he were 100% sure that I wouldn't get hurt.It had been quite chaotic that day. The o
I couldn't bear to watch anymore, so I quietly left.I couldn't hide the tears in my eyes anymore. They streamed down my face and dripped onto the floor.I sat in the living room for a long time, staring at the clock and starting a countdown in my head.Luckily, I was about to leave in less than
I handed the bag in my hands to Crystal Amos, Clayton's younger sister. She was one of the few people who had treated me with kindness for the past few years."Please burn this dress after I'm gone. I don't deserve to wear this anymore."Crystal accepted the bag from me, the anger showing in her e
"Have you made up your mind, Hailey Paltrow?" the system asked. "If you decide to abort the mission now, you won't be allowed to change your mind later."The system sighed, finding it quite a pity. After all, the system had only come about because of my great wish to save Clayton Amos from his terr
