Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
I handed the bag in my hands to Crystal Amos, Clayton's younger sister. She was one of the few people who had treated me with kindness for the past few years.

"Please burn this dress after I'm gone. I don't deserve to wear this anymore."

Crystal accepted the bag from me, the anger showing in her eyes because of how unfairly she thought I was being treated.

"Clayton's truly gone overboard this time! I'm going to give him a piece of my mind! I'll make sure he gives you a hefty break-up fee before you leave! "

Crystal turned to leave in a huff, but I quickly stopped her.

"There's no need for that anymore."

She was well aware of how I'd been treating them both for the past few years, and she committed it to heart. After all, I was the one who had tried to help them improve their relationship and bring them closer to each other.

As soon as I was done speaking, Clayton reappeared while pressing against the wound on his arm. His voice was icy-cold as he asked, "Where are you going?"

I looked up at him. It had only been half a day since I saw him, but I couldn't help feeling taken aback.

Suddenly, I was reminded of the time when I first met him.

It was dark in the bar, and he was leaning against the edge of a table, downing glasses of wine all by himself.

A jacket was draped over his broad shoulders, adding to his tall frame. His eyes were dark and murky, his lips tugged in a straight line, and he looked about as welcoming as a wolf with blood on its muzzle.

However, all it took was just one look from him, and I was enamored. I could no longer shift my eyes away from his gaze.

I had seen plenty of expressions in his eyes over the past few years. However, I had never once seen the tenderness he'd only reserved for Gladys.

I snapped back to the present and said, "You're mistaken. I was just asking Crystal to help me settle some irrelevant things."

The more I spoke, the more my eyes darted around the place. Somehow, it felt as though I was also trying to convince myself of that.

I wasn't wrong, though.

Since I'd arrived without a word, I was going to sever all ties with this world before I left, too.

Clayton stared at me for a long time. Then, he finally accepted my explanation and left after failing to find any fault with what I'd just told him.

This was more like his usual self.

Clayton had always been quiet when he was around me. He'd only speak a little more if he were talking about Gladys. Naturally, he wouldn't really care where I was going.

However, a short while later, the door to my home opened. I watched as Gladys ignored me and rushed upstairs to find Clayton.

She behaved as if this were her home instead of mine, seeing as how she didn't even spare me a single glance.

I followed her up the stairs and saw her knocking on Clayton's door.

As soon as she'd knocked, Clayton immediately screeched, "Get lost!"

Gladys sounded anxious. "It's me, Clays…"

The sound of the door unlocking was heard.

The door was thus opened from the inside.

I only realized then that the "Get lost" he'd yelled at the door earlier was meant for me. He thought I was the one knocking at his door instead of her.

Clayton's eyes were full of lust as he stared at Gladys and asked, "Why are you here? Aren't you worried that he'd find out you came over?"

Gladys' eyes immediately filled with tears. Her voice shook as she said, "We aren't dating just yet. He can't do anything about me.

"But you got hurt because you tried to protect me. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't make sure that you were okay."

I stood rooted to the ground. My heart felt as though someone had just pummeled it into a mess. It had hurt so much.

It was obvious that they didn't even bother pretending I was still alive, based on their conversation with each other.

I had done everything I could all day to stop them from contacting each other, yet in their eyes, I was still nothing but the dust beneath their shoes. I was expendable to them.

Gladys began to cry. "Don't you want to see me too?"

Clayton couldn't hold back anymore. He hugged her tightly right in front of me.

"I need you, Gigi. I've always needed you."

I watched as his eyes gradually turned red. He looked like he'd just been reunited with something precious he'd lost for years.

His words were like a sharp knife in my heart.

So, had I always been a joke to him?

After they were finally done hugging each other, Gladys immediately started checking on the wound on his arm. She kept caressing his arm while sobbing quietly.

"Does it hurt?"

Clayton looked at her with pity in his eyes, feeling sorry for her. He gently grabbed her wandering hands and held them in his own.

His eyes were gentle as he said, "Don't be scared, Gigi. It doesn't hurt anymore.

"Look, the doctor bandaged it up really well for me. Nothing will go wrong as long as I change out the bandages regularly as told.

"Also, you should go back."

I'd spent five years with him, yet not once had I ever heard Clayton speak so gently to me.

As it turned out, only the main protagonist of the story deserved his gentleness.

I said nothing in reply. A long while later, Clayton reached into his pocket and retrieved a ring that he had forged again.I took a closer look at it and saw that he even had my name engraved inside the band."It's been three years, and I've been carrying this ring around with me ever since. I told myself that I would slide it back onto your finger if I ever saw you again."I kept regretting the fact that I hadn't been able to sort out my feelings for you back then and forced you to leave me."Lately, I keep recalling the past. Right at the beginning, when I stabbed you near the heart, you never even moved to avoid me. Instead, you kept telling me that you were worried about me."And then, we did a lot of things together. You even insisted on searching for me all day and night after I got into a huge accident during the race. I would have died then if it weren't for you."Tears began falling from his eyes and trickling down his cheek. However, I wasn't fazed in the slightest.

I couldn't believe my eyes. I was really looking at Clayton again. The first thing he did to me as soon as we met again was to pick me up from the ground despite my protests. He brought me to a secluded area with nobody else in sight. He held onto both my wrists with one hand and kept repeating some mantra under his breath multiple times.I didn't know what was going on, so I kept struggling against him, trying to shake him off. However, a long time passed, and still, nothing happened.I was still standing there in front of him.Clayton's eyes turned bright red as he yelled into the air, "Why? Why isn't it working? You freaking lied to me!"A voice that sounded a lot like that of my own system spoke up and said, "I told you that it's useless unless she willingly wants to go back with you."I managed to make sense of the situation based on their short conversation with each other. Clayton must have made a pact with his system, giving him a chance to bring me back into his world

Hailey's POVAfter I returned to my own world, I immediately got rid of my habit of reading novels in my free time.I was so worried that I would develop feelings for the characters in the novels again and end up transmigrating into the novel as the antagonist or some other pitiful character once more. Some time later, I heard one of my friends, Pattie Jensen, bring up that specific novel again. But this time, Clayton's and Gladys' stories had changed.Clayton was madly in love with Gladys at the start of the novel, but only until a new character named Hailey Paltrow appeared.Pattie sighed and said, "Look, the character doesn't just share your name. I think her personality is a lot like yours, too!"I felt my heart squeeze. However, I pretended to be calm about it."That's quite a coincidence. I never thought that I could be a side character in a book."Yet, Pattie kept chirping as she continued reading the novel. Over time, Clayton came to see that what he believed he felt

Clayton's POVClayton was feeling unsettled, but he didn't know why exactly. The longer he stayed, the more uneasy he felt. Thus, he hurriedly grabbed his coat and decided to go home.Gladys couldn't help herself and stopped him from leaving. "What's the matter?"Clayton didn't want to waste time talking to her. He had already finished all the food that Gladys brought for him, and he just wanted to get home now as quickly as possible. After all, Hailey was still waiting for him there.Feeling restless, he retrieved his phone and pulled up the home surveillance feed, soon realizing that nobody was around. Hailey was gone; not even her shadow remained.Clayton's heart began thumping wildly in his chest. He suddenly felt as though something important was about to leave him.Gladys spoke up, trying to get him to stay."Clays, are you really going to abandon me and leave me alone here? Would you really do that? If so, I'm going straight home right now."Gladys was still confident

Clayton froze for a couple of seconds before finally saying, "Then, wait at home for me. I'll be there in a bit. I won't care about her this time."He slid the ring back on my finger as he spoke, and I didn't fight back. He just assumed that I agreed with him. When he turned his back on me, however, I immediately pulled the ring back off and threw it into the trash can outside.I knew that Gladys wouldn't let him off the hook that easily. She would never marry Clayton, but she was extremely possessive of him.As expected, Clayton still hadn't returned home two hours later. The system appeared once more and said, "Hailey, it's time.""Let's go," I replied. "I tried my best to rewrite his fate, but maybe I'm just too powerless to make such a change. Nothing I ever did worked."So, instead of putting up with him, I might as well end my suffering now."I had started reading this novel while I was bored out of my skin one sunny afternoon in college. The sunrays were piercing into m

However, Clayton simply refused to take the ring from me. His face turned pale as he said, "You still don't believe that Gigi and I are innocent, do you? Where are you planning to go?"Clayton grabbed hold of me rather forcefully and refused to let go."Clayton, let me go…"His face kept getting closer and closer to me, his eyes turning bloodshot. "Let you go? So that you could leave me? Over my dead body! I'll never let that happen!"Before I could reply, I suddenly heard a familiar voice coming from behind me."Clays, I brought you some chicken noodle soup…"Gladys suddenly froze on the spot.I could feel Clayton's grip on my hand loosen, so I quickly freed myself, shaking him off.Gladys sure knew how to appear just at the right time. She quickly recollected herself and brought in a container of food."Clays, I stayed up all night making this food and the soup for you. Have a taste."She then held out her thumb and showed it to Clayton, a pout forming on her lips."Look,
