Chapter 3

Author: Anonymous
I couldn't bear to watch anymore, so I quietly left.

I couldn't hide the tears in my eyes anymore. They streamed down my face and dripped onto the floor.

I sat in the living room for a long time, staring at the clock and starting a countdown in my head.

Luckily, I was about to leave in less than a day, and I would never have to return.

A long while later, Gladys carefully made her way downstairs, sporting lips that were a lot redder and more swollen than before.

I averted my eyes and pretended not to have noticed a thing.

However, Gladys came straight up to me and gave me in-depth instructions.

"I've finally managed to coax Clays to sleep. Be careful not to wake him up. Also, I won't be able to come very often, so you'd better take good care of him. Don't let him get hurt again.

"He may have a terrible temper, but he's a good person. If he ever yells at you, you can come looking for me. I'll help you tell him off."

She held my hand while looking at me with a gloating expression that she wasn't able to hide.

I withdrew my hands from her hold and couldn't stop myself from firing back, "I am his fiancee. You don't have to tell me what to do."

The delight in her eyes just exemplified. She chuckled aloud and said, "If it weren't for me, did you really think that you would even have a chance to be with him in the first place?

"You think too highly of yourself. I am his first love. You're nothing but my replacement. So, you'd better behave as one."

It was strange, but her words didn't stir up any emotion within me. Perhaps it was because I'd already sunk to the bottom of my sorrows, and nothing could bother me anymore.

"You're not the one to tell me whether I'm a replacement or not. At the very least, I am his fiancee. Even if we can't get married now, we can still marry next time."

"You—"

Gladys was upset, and she raised her voice at me all of a sudden. Then, she took a deep breath and paused to collect herself.

"You may be able to win this argument against me, but that's about it. And since I'm feeling mighty happy today, I'll let you win.

"But next time, I'm going to kick you out of this very house you live in. Guess who Clays is going to listen to then? Me, or you?"

With that, she stomped over to the door and slammed it shut behind her.

I immediately lost all my remaining energy and slumped back onto the couch, breathing heavily.

Clayton walked down from the top of the stairs and started chiding me.

"What's the point of arguing with her? She's nothing but an older sister figure to me."

I glanced at the red lipstick mark by his lips and couldn't stop myself from chuckling.

"Ah. I see that you have a very good relationship with her."

He immediately started explaining himself as he lifted his hand to wipe away the lipstick mark I'd just seen.

"I just brushed against something by accident. Can you please stop overthinking and coming up with ridiculous scenarios in your head?"

He walked toward me, his eyes deep and dark. However, his explanation was preposterous. I just couldn't think of how he'd manage to brush his lips against red lipstick "by accident".

I never really got to know anyone else besides him after transmigrating into this world. I only followed him around, and he had become my whole world.

Everyone thought that I was out of my mind, trying to "seduce" Gladys' lapdog without fearing retribution from her.

And yet, Clayton would never take my side or bother explaining himself.

He said, "Don't even think about it. I will never abandon Gladys just to be with you."

My eyes turned red. I then locked myself up in my room and refused to eat, drink, or even look at Clayton anymore.

Eventually, he broke into my room and dragged me out.

His eyes were as cold as ice as he demanded, "Did you really think that I would give you more of my attention if you starved yourself to death? Why don't you think of some other way instead?"

I read between the lines and pretended that he was actually trying to comfort me. And so, I found myself forgiving him and feeling a whole lot better afterward.

No matter what other people said about me, I refused to acknowledge them.

When people called me Clayton's lapdog, he wouldn't say a word to them. His expression would barely even change. However, he now got angry on Gladys' behalf and wouldn't let me call her names because he didn't want me to "overthink" and blame her for anything. He even went as far as calling them "ridiculous scenarios".

I hung my head low and wiped my tears away.

"You're the one overthinking things. I never did such a thing," I said.

I could feel Clayton's suspicious gaze on me.

I continued, "I'll apologize to her the next time I see her."

I said nothing in reply. A long while later, Clayton reached into his pocket and retrieved a ring that he had forged again.I took a closer look at it and saw that he even had my name engraved inside the band."It's been three years, and I've been carrying this ring around with me ever since. I told myself that I would slide it back onto your finger if I ever saw you again."I kept regretting the fact that I hadn't been able to sort out my feelings for you back then and forced you to leave me."Lately, I keep recalling the past. Right at the beginning, when I stabbed you near the heart, you never even moved to avoid me. Instead, you kept telling me that you were worried about me."And then, we did a lot of things together. You even insisted on searching for me all day and night after I got into a huge accident during the race. I would have died then if it weren't for you."Tears began falling from his eyes and trickling down his cheek. However, I wasn't fazed in the slightest.

I couldn't believe my eyes. I was really looking at Clayton again. The first thing he did to me as soon as we met again was to pick me up from the ground despite my protests. He brought me to a secluded area with nobody else in sight. He held onto both my wrists with one hand and kept repeating some mantra under his breath multiple times.I didn't know what was going on, so I kept struggling against him, trying to shake him off. However, a long time passed, and still, nothing happened.I was still standing there in front of him.Clayton's eyes turned bright red as he yelled into the air, "Why? Why isn't it working? You freaking lied to me!"A voice that sounded a lot like that of my own system spoke up and said, "I told you that it's useless unless she willingly wants to go back with you."I managed to make sense of the situation based on their short conversation with each other. Clayton must have made a pact with his system, giving him a chance to bring me back into his world

Hailey's POVAfter I returned to my own world, I immediately got rid of my habit of reading novels in my free time.I was so worried that I would develop feelings for the characters in the novels again and end up transmigrating into the novel as the antagonist or some other pitiful character once more. Some time later, I heard one of my friends, Pattie Jensen, bring up that specific novel again. But this time, Clayton's and Gladys' stories had changed.Clayton was madly in love with Gladys at the start of the novel, but only until a new character named Hailey Paltrow appeared.Pattie sighed and said, "Look, the character doesn't just share your name. I think her personality is a lot like yours, too!"I felt my heart squeeze. However, I pretended to be calm about it."That's quite a coincidence. I never thought that I could be a side character in a book."Yet, Pattie kept chirping as she continued reading the novel. Over time, Clayton came to see that what he believed he felt

Clayton's POVClayton was feeling unsettled, but he didn't know why exactly. The longer he stayed, the more uneasy he felt. Thus, he hurriedly grabbed his coat and decided to go home.Gladys couldn't help herself and stopped him from leaving. "What's the matter?"Clayton didn't want to waste time talking to her. He had already finished all the food that Gladys brought for him, and he just wanted to get home now as quickly as possible. After all, Hailey was still waiting for him there.Feeling restless, he retrieved his phone and pulled up the home surveillance feed, soon realizing that nobody was around. Hailey was gone; not even her shadow remained.Clayton's heart began thumping wildly in his chest. He suddenly felt as though something important was about to leave him.Gladys spoke up, trying to get him to stay."Clays, are you really going to abandon me and leave me alone here? Would you really do that? If so, I'm going straight home right now."Gladys was still confident

Clayton froze for a couple of seconds before finally saying, "Then, wait at home for me. I'll be there in a bit. I won't care about her this time."He slid the ring back on my finger as he spoke, and I didn't fight back. He just assumed that I agreed with him. When he turned his back on me, however, I immediately pulled the ring back off and threw it into the trash can outside.I knew that Gladys wouldn't let him off the hook that easily. She would never marry Clayton, but she was extremely possessive of him.As expected, Clayton still hadn't returned home two hours later. The system appeared once more and said, "Hailey, it's time.""Let's go," I replied. "I tried my best to rewrite his fate, but maybe I'm just too powerless to make such a change. Nothing I ever did worked."So, instead of putting up with him, I might as well end my suffering now."I had started reading this novel while I was bored out of my skin one sunny afternoon in college. The sunrays were piercing into m

However, Clayton simply refused to take the ring from me. His face turned pale as he said, "You still don't believe that Gigi and I are innocent, do you? Where are you planning to go?"Clayton grabbed hold of me rather forcefully and refused to let go."Clayton, let me go…"His face kept getting closer and closer to me, his eyes turning bloodshot. "Let you go? So that you could leave me? Over my dead body! I'll never let that happen!"Before I could reply, I suddenly heard a familiar voice coming from behind me."Clays, I brought you some chicken noodle soup…"Gladys suddenly froze on the spot.I could feel Clayton's grip on my hand loosen, so I quickly freed myself, shaking him off.Gladys sure knew how to appear just at the right time. She quickly recollected herself and brought in a container of food."Clays, I stayed up all night making this food and the soup for you. Have a taste."She then held out her thumb and showed it to Clayton, a pout forming on her lips."Look,
