Chapter 1

Author: Gardenia
In that instant, a wave of cheers broke out as people began moving around me, the noise gradually growing louder.

I snapped back to my senses after hearing their voices. As I looked around, I was stunned all over again.

I had actually returned to the exact day I proposed to Matilda Sutton ten years ago!

Matilda wasn't well-known at the time, being nothing more than an obscure singer. I had proposed to her at this event, which was just a small, private gig she invited only her close friends to.

I was caught off guard as I looked at her young and beautiful face on stage, unable to pull myself together for a moment.

It was then that a friend of mine, whose name I couldn't even remember, nudged me and shoved a huge bouquet into my hands. "What are you waiting for, Tyler? You're up next! Go on!"

In the meantime, the atmosphere around the stage had reached its peak, with fireworks erupting across the sky at just the right moment. In the middle of that picture-perfect scene, I walked over and dumped the bouquet into a nearby trash can.

"What are you doing, Tyler?"

My other friends were stunned.

I had asked all of them to come and help me with the proposal, and they knew how long I had spent planning it.

But I was fully aware that there was no reason to go through with the proposal in this life. It wasn't long before the fireworks ended, like the curtain coming down on a show, and I missed my chance.

Matilda and I were meant to end here anyway.

In my past life, I had spent years forcing a relationship that was never going to work, and in the end, I hadn't even gotten one sincere "I love you" from her.

I had accepted the bouquet from my friend back then and nervously walked up to propose to her. Matilda had just ended her performance, and the look of contempt she gave me was one that I would never forget.

"You think I'd marry you just because you bought all this, Tyler? You've got to be kidding me!

"You'd better not think you can insult me with your money just because you're a spoiled scion! Do you really think everyone just cares about your money, Tyler?"

I was so humiliated right then that I was completely at a loss, and all my excitement just died out. I later became the laughingstock across the entire social scene when someone uploaded the video of the incident online.

"Aren't you going to propose to Matilda, Tyler?"

I saw the confusion on my friends' faces and exclaimed, "I'm not proposing anymore! Come on, let's go grab some drinks! You guys have worked hard!"

I turned around and walked away with my friends, not even looking at Matilda on stage. I had barely taken a few steps when the crowd around us started to stir—Matilda had come down from the stage.

I scowled slightly, finding that things weren't playing out the way I remembered.

I didn't even have the time to react, as Matilda suddenly gathered her dress, walked toward me, and blocked my path. "Where are you off to, Tyler? D-Do you have nothing to say to me?"

I turned slightly to look at Matilda, whose youthful face was still flushed and pretty from all that running. I remained quiet as she stood there staring at me with intent, clearly waiting for something.

I instinctively backed up a little and kept my distance. "I have nothing to say to you. I have things to take care of, so I'll head off now."

I tried to walk around her and leave, but one of my friends grabbed me and shot me a look, as if telling me that I should propose to Matilda after making all those preparations. I still had the ring tucked in my pocket, after all.

I had truly decided not to propose to her anymore, so after a beat of pure silence, I made my move to go.

Matilda suddenly reached her hand out to me, biting her lip with a look of hesitation on her face. "Where is the thing, Tyler?"

After I heard Mom's recount, I was unable to recover for quite some time, finding the situation entirely unbelievable.Upon seeing how stunned I was, Mom and Dad made up an excuse to go grab me some supplements, leaving the two of us in the room.Just then, Matilda woke up too. She slowly turned her head toward me, and the moment our eyes met, she let out a faint, relieved smile. "You're finally awake. Thank goodness."I felt my eyes sting after hearing that and quickly held back the tears. I sounded slightly guilty as I spoke. "Why would you do this for me? If you're only doing this because you want to repay me for giving you the parachute before, then…"I wanted to tell her that we'd be even now.Matilda understood what I was getting at and shook her head slightly. "I only heard that you'd gone into shock from losing too much blood. I didn't really put too much thought into it. I guess it's because I really do like you…"I fell silent for quite some time before asking, "Why

Matilda widened her eyes in surprise, confused by how I had reached that conclusion. She shook her head after a while and said, "I never got to finish what I was saying back in our past life, Tyler."I furrowed my brow and asked what else she had wanted to say.Matilda took a deep breath and said, "If there is a next life, I'm never letting you go, Tyler."I wasn't moved in the slightest after hearing that. I felt a terrible dread instead, as if I were being trapped. I shook my head violently. "Do you seriously think we were happy back then, Matilda? I'm begging you—please don't make the same mistake again! "You should just stick to chasing your dream of singing in this life. We're done for good! We should just stay out of each other's lives from now on!"Matilda's expression hardened after my repeated refusals. "I'll just ask you a few things, Tyler. Do you really want me to leave? Do you not want to know how I was reborn?"I just wanted her gone at that moment, so I urged he

I widened my eyes in surprise, finding it hard to believe that Matilda had actually chosen me over her own fans. That wasn't even the most shocking part, though.I opened her official social media account and saw a post she put up just two minutes ago, announcing that she was retiring from the entertainment industry.I was shaken to my core, becoming increasingly uncertain about Matilda's true stance toward me. I found it utterly absurd. I knew better than anyone else just how much Matilda cared about her career and fans. After all, I had spent ten years in my past life watching her work her way up in the entertainment industry. How could Matilda just walk away from it?I couldn't get hold of her, so for the time being, I had no choice but to keep my questions to myself.Matilda unexpectedly showed up at my house again during dinnertime. Mom and Dad had noticed that we had a falling-out, so they invited her over to fix things between us.I merely smiled, finding it funny. Ther

I took a couple of steps back and frowned. "I don't want to talk to you. I don't like you anymore, so please just forget about what happened in the past."Matilda widened her eyes in surprise. She fell silent for quite some time before finally asking, "How could I just forget about what happened between us?"I failed to see what merited such a nostalgic look on her face regarding my past desperate pursuit of her, so I simply turned and left.Matilda called my name several times from behind me, but I never turned around. She eventually left in tears.I let out a quiet sigh before calling my assistant and instructing him to arrange payment for Matilda's mother's medical fees. I'd consider it a final resolution of our past. Matilda and I were completely done from that moment onward."Tyler? Where's Matilda? Did she come back with you?"I was greeted by Mom and Dad's questions the moment I returned, so I quickly threw out a random excuse about losing her and glossed over the topic.

I furrowed my brow as I tried to remember the last time I had spent excessively on Matilda. I finally recalled that it was six months ago, when I dropped a ton of money to pull off that birthday surprise for her.Ryan had apparently interpreted that as me humiliating her with money. It was no wonder Matilda had become colder toward me after we got married. If she had been listening to Ryan stir things up between us all the time in my past life, of course she'd grow distant."Tyler has never used his money to humiliate me! I have no idea what you're talking about, Ryan!" Matilda's expression turned cold as she slowly stood up. As Ryan stared at her in shock, she continued, "I can decide for myself whether I was being insulted or not, so please don't ever talk about Tyler like that again!""W-What's that supposed to mean, Matilda?" Ryan took a couple of steps back, utterly confused by Matilda's sudden change.Matilda took a deep breath and glanced at me before speaking. "I know Tyl

  • If There's a Next Life, I'll Let Go   Chapter 4

I was just about to ask what Matilda was playing at when she suddenly wiped away her tears and walked away. I almost went after her, but I instantly stopped dead in my tracks. Ending things right here was actually a good thing. It was better to call it quits when we were both still in our prime, before all the pain and resentment set in.Just then, Mom and Dad noticed Matilda had vanished and quickly surmised that I had upset her. They instantly started giving me an earful. "You can't just mistreat such a good person like that, Tyler! She came here especially for your sake! Why were you acting so cold toward her?"Mom scowled while Dad nodded frantically in agreement.I couldn't help but smile wryly as I heard that. If they knew what things were really like between Matilda and me in our past life, they probably wouldn't be saying that. Mom and Dad had treated Matilda the same way in my past life. They gladly put family resources toward fulfilling her ambitions since they knew
