Chapter 1

When I said no, Vera Barrymore's head snapped toward me.

"You don't want to?" Her voice rose without her seeming to notice, disbelief written all over her face.

My nails dug into my palms as I looked up and met her eyes.

"I don't want to," I said again, slow and deliberate.

Her expression froze.

Sebastian Cooper, who'd been leaning against her shoulder the whole time, suddenly spoke up.

"Vera, I should just go," he said, barely above a whisper. "You know I don't want to put you in a hard spot."

The words had barely left his mouth before the hand clutching his stomach started trembling again.

Vera's face fell instantly. When she looked back at me, her eyes had hardened with resolve again.

She said the same line she'd said in my last life.

"Sebastian got hurt at our wedding. I can't just abandon him. If you don't agree to this, then we don't have to get married at all."

Watching her be as coldhearted as I remembered, I felt nothing but relief.

We'd never actually suited each other. I was some directionless playboy from a rich family, and she was the hardworking, ambitious heiress who actually had her act together.

Vera had looked down on my useless ways since we were kids, and she'd never liked having me trail after her either.

The whole marriage only happened because I'd begged my parents to arrange it.

Since I'd been given a second life, I figured everything might as well go back to where it started.

So I nodded without a shred of hesitation.

"Fine. The wedding's off."

Sebastian, still tucked against her, lit up instantly, his hands shaking with excitement.

Vera, though, didn't look nearly as relieved as I'd expected. She just looked dazed. Her dark eyes stayed locked on me, her lips pressed into a thin line.

A second later, Sebastian let out a pained yelp, staring at her in confusion.

"Vera, that hurts."

Only then did Vera seem to notice how hard she'd been gripping him, and she let go in a hurry.

Sebastian coughed twice, then rubbed his tired face against her hair.

"Vera, I'm exhausted. I want to rest."

At that, Vera stood and helped him toward the bedroom.

As she passed me, she paused for a second and, for once, actually explained herself. "Sebastian's condition isn't stable right now, and I need to stay by his side," she started, before I cut her off.

"Don't bother telling me. Whatever's going on between you two isn't my business."

In my last life, she hadn't explained herself either, but she'd done exactly the same thing anyway.

We'd barely been married, and already she spent every night at Sebastian's side while I, her own husband, slept alone.

I used to lie there listening to the two of them through the wall, laughing and carrying on, while I cried silently into my pillow with my teeth clenched so hard on the sheets so I wouldn't make a sound.

I wasn't going to live through a single day of that again.

Vera's face darkened completely. "I hope you really don't care," she said, her voice sharp with sarcasm, "instead of just making me deal with a call from my parents in the middle of the night."

With that, she stopped looking at me and turned to help Sebastian upstairs.

In my last life, I really couldn't do anything about her. All I ever managed was crying like a whipped dog and running to her parents to complain.

But I'd been given another life, and I wasn't doing that again.

So I opened my chat with Mom and typed out a quick message.

Me: [Mom, I don't want to marry Vera anymore.]

Her reply came back almost instantly.

Mom: [Just wait for us. I'll handle everything else.]

I finally relaxed, and I fell into a heavy sleep.

Once I'd drawn a clear line with Vera, I figured Sebastian would at least know to behave himself.

Instead, the next morning, I was jolted awake by a scream that tore through the entire mansion.

Still, worried she might have scared me, Elaine kept glancing over at me the whole way, checking on me.I'd been putting on a straight face just to tease her, but watching her grow more and more concerned, I couldn't help but burst out laughing.Elaine blinked, startled, then let out a helpless little laugh."You've gotten mischievous," she said softly. "Scaring me like that."I stopped laughing and put on a pout. "Elaine, I'm not that fragile. You don't need to worry about me."Elaine reached out and ruffled my hair. She hummed softly."I'm not worried about you. I just feel for you."The smile faded from my lips. My situation had blown up publicly enough that she must have heard about it by now.I put on a careless tone. "Out with the old, in with the new, right? It's nothing. Who hasn't run into a bad apple or two."I walked ahead with my hands clasped behind my back, then noticed she hadn't followed.I turned around and found her holding a bouquet that seemed to have app

"Grayson, what's been going on with you lately? Why won't you answer any of my calls?"Her voice was careful, cautious, a world away from the way she used to talk down to me.I'd just lost a game with some friends, so I sounded a little irritated. "What are you doing at my house?"Ever since we'd parted ways that day, her father had wired over 100 million dollars, and our engagement had been formally called off.Given her personality, I'd figured she'd never show her face again.Instead, within days, Vera had dropped everything at the company and started showing up to corner me every single day.Seeing my open irritation, humiliation flickered across her face. She stared at me and begged, her tone unusually meek. "Can we skip the cold shoulder? Let's just talk this out instead of fighting."Fighting? Listening to her casually toss that word around nearly made me laugh out loud.I'd been held down and slapped a dozen times, and to her, that counted as just a squabble.I turned

Vera didn't say a word as she knelt in front of me and silently took the full force of her father's rage. She couldn't understand it. How had everything changed overnight?Sebastian, who'd sworn that he loved her, turned out to be a liar through and through. And what had she done for that liar? She'd hurt Grayson, the man she'd grown up with. She'd even called off their wedding for Sebastian. Vera's eyes fixed on my face, and her chest ached like it had been stabbed with a needle. She knew I'd been pampered my whole life, that even my own parents had never once laid a hand on me. And now, that once-flawless face of mine was covered in cuts and bruises. She wanted to apologize, but I never looked at her once, not even for a second.Vera's breath caught, and she suddenly raised her hand and slapped herself. It wasn't enough for her. Choking back sobs, she grabbed my hand and forced it against her own cheek, again and again."Grayson, curse me, hit me. Just don't ignore me, plea

"Vera, save me! I'm so scared. Why are there so many people in the house?"Vera looked dazed for a moment, but the second her eyes landed on the marks on my face, she froze completely. She shoved Sebastian aside and hurried toward me.The instant she reached out to me on reflex, my mom slapped her hand away. Her voice shook with fury. "Get away from him! Thanks to that lover of yours, we're not letting either of you off easy."The words had barely left her mouth when the police pushed through the door.Sebastian stood frozen, shaking. His so-called friends tried to slip along the wall toward the exit, but the officers blocked them instantly.Todd shook his head like a rattle drum. "This has nothing to do with me. We're just guests here. If you've got a problem, go talk to him."The rest of them jumped on that immediately, all pointing at Sebastian. "That's right, officers, go after him. He's the one who told us to do it."Sebastian's eyes went bloodshot, staring at them in dis

Sebastian didn't look alarmed at all, just faintly disappointed that the fun was cut short.Todd, always in tune with him, moved to grab another piece from the cabinet.I planted myself in front of it. "Do you people even know how much those things are?"Before I could finish warning them off, several of Sebastian's friends grabbed me together and forced me down onto the floor. My eyes burned red as I watched them pull out one piece after another, powerless to stop them.Another vase hit the ground with a crack.Sebastian's laughter rang out, mocking and loud. He shot me a contemptuous glance.Apparently deciding I'd become too much of an eyesore, he said, "Let's throw him out."They grabbed me by the collar and started dragging me toward the door. Seizing the moment, I kicked Todd square in the stomach. He dropped to his knees instantly, sweat beading on his forehead.Someone swore. Vera gave me one long look, then grabbed Sebastian and pulled him away.I didn't want to think about any of it, so after washing up I went straight to bed.Just as I was drifting off, Mom's call jolted me awake."Pack a bag, Grayson. Your dad and I are coming to see you tomorrow."Mr. and Mrs. Barrymore refuse to believe their daughter would do something so reckless, so they'll be there too."We'll get everything out in the open between both families then."We also got to the bottom of the security footage. The person who went into Sebastian's room that night was his ex-girlfriend. He was wide awake when he let her in. So where's the drugging supposed to have come from? Where's the missing kidney?"My hands trembled a little, not from fear, but from the sheer thrill of finally knowing the truth.I hung up after talking things through with Mom.After tomorrow, this would all finally be over. That night I slept better than I had since coming back to this life. But before I'd e
