Chapter 9

Author: Perfect Timing
Grace's voice was sharp, and everyone turned to look in her direction.

"How could it not be possible?" Grace forced a smile, allowing her colleagues to pull her in for a photo. Soon, the pale yellow hem of her dress was scuffed, with black and white marks. Max held up his glass among the shareholders, flattering and agreeing with them. Grace’s expression turned dark.

The shareholders' gazes shifted between Grace and Max, then revealed an expression of subtle meaning.

Suddenly, the lights in the venue dimmed before a spotlight illuminated the center of the conference hall. Mr. Mayford's proxy lawyer slowly walked out holding a contract.

“I’m really about to witness history!”

The colleagues whispered excitedly behind, unable to hide their enthusiasm.

The lawyer opened the contract and read aloud, “Mr. Leon Mayford has transferred all his shares to his only daughter, Emily Mayford.”

At these words, the venue instantly fell silent.

“Emily? Who did you say? How could it be Emily?!”

“I’m not your father. You’re just my friend’s child. I took care of you out of kindness. I never expected your obsessive mother to bring you up like this. Emily is my biological daughter, the only treasure of my beloved wife and me, and the sole heiress to the Mayford Group. It’s bad enough that you took Max away, but as long as I’m alive, I will not allow you to harm Emily in any way.”My father’s appearance completely solidified my position.Grace was severely shocked. After standing frozen for a couple of seconds, she suddenly leaped from the 23rd floor.***After this, the police recovered my emerald bracelet, and Max was imprisoned for theft. After inheriting the company, I thoroughly cleaned up the sycophantic and flattering culture within the company with the support of my father’s old subordinates.Everyone in the company greeted me respectfully, not daring to utter a word more.Hiding my identity no longer served any purpose, so I moved into the long-vacant CEO office,

Three days later, the shareholders' meeting was held at the Mayford Group’s office. The true identity of Grace was about to be revealed. When I arrived at the Mayford Group lobby, Grace and Max were already standing at the entrance. More colleagues who were close to Grace arrived one after another. They greeted her with their usual enthusiasm. In contrast, Grace looked a bit flustered. “How could you come here?”A colleague, who was carrying a bag, stepped forward with flattery. “Grace, wasn’t it you who sent us the invitation to come?”“Yeah, the invitation said that you are going to inherit the Mayford Group.”“Indeed, one’s fate is determined at birth.”“Grace, you’re just 23 and you’re inheriting your father’s company, while I just led the mundane life of an ordinary person at that age.”The flattery grew louder and louder, successfully lifting Grace’s spirits. She led everyone to the conference registration area. “Where did you get this invitation?” The person in charge o

“Emily, since I was the one who brought up the divorce first, I won’t ask for the downtown apartment,” Max spoke with a haughty, condescending air as if he were doing me a favor."What do you want, then?" I hadn’t even settled the score about the emerald bracelet he had stolen, and now he dared to covet my property—a house he hadn’t spent a single cent on."Five years of marriage—that’s a long time. The custom blue Santana isn’t too much to ask for, is it?"His words made me laugh out loud. He was truly delusional."Sure," I said, smirking. "Kneel and beg, and I’ll give it to you." My tone was lofty, the gap between us insurmountable."Emily, don’t push it! I’m being generous with you." Max’s face twisted in rage as he shouted, attracting the attention of passersby.I stepped back, distancing myself from his tantrum. From a distance, I spotted a sleek, imposing motorcade of black luxury cars heading toward us. Leading the convoy was an especially striking, high-end black car.Th

Max snatched the walkie-talkie from the security guard. “No! No one is calling the police. I won’t let anyone jeopardize the Mayford Group.”His greedy, shameless expression was crystal clear to me. “Emily, if you really wanted to visit, you could’ve just asked. I would’ve invited you personally.”I was speechless at his audacity and reached for my phone to call the police again. Luckily, I still had the surveillance footage of Max stealing from me.However, Max was quick. He grabbed my phone and shoved me to the ground. “Em, if you won’t listen to reason, don’t blame me for what happens next.”With a sharp crack, he smashed my phone against the ground, shattering it into pieces.“This is the end, Max,” I said coldly as I stood up. “Meet me at the court tomorrow at 9 a.m.”I should’ve ended this ridiculous marriage the moment I caught him stealing from me and spending my money.“Divorce? It’ll be me who files first. I’ve had enough of you,” Max spat back, full of defiance.Grac

Unable to reach me and unable to scrape together a single penny, Max stood there helplessly as the restaurant manager prepared to call the police.“Wait! I brought the wrong card today. I’m not dining and dashing! You see that car outside? I’ll leave it as collateral and come back tomorrow to settle the bill,” Max hastily offered. When the restaurant manager glanced at the car parked outside, a faint, enigmatic smile played on his lips. “And how can you prove that the car belongs to you?”“Enough of this nonsense. Don’t you recognize who I am?” Clutching her designer bag, Grace raised her chin arrogantly at the manager.“Open your eyes and take a good look. This is Grace Wayland, the heiress of the Mayford Group,” a sycophantic coworker beside her boasted.“As far as I know,” the manager replied coolly, “The Mayford Group heiress is surnamed Mayford, not—”“What would someone running a mere restaurant know about anything?” Grace snapped, cutting him off. “This is just a small exp
