The humidifier made a light hum in the background as I collapsed on the comfy bed that bounced slightly before I sat upright, legs curled at my side. Since I was busy arranging my clothes in the closet, I didn’t have the time to admire the room decoration but now that I was almost done, I should do that. I swiveled my gaze around the room, taking in the warm glow of the pink pastel color on the wall, the beautiful artworks that were hung on it. While the decoration leaned more on the minimalist side, something about it brought warmth to my heart and it felt like whoever did this poured out their hearts into bringing this alive. I had been anxious about the fact that it would take me a long time to get accustomed to Daxton’s home just like my new home. But this room felt like home. I shouldn’t feel comfortable yet. This whole assistant to Daxton still made me skeptical because the more I thought about it, the more things seemed more calculated— like an excuse to trap me by his side. That had to be it. My fingers fluttered up to my chest, moving from it to tug at the pendant around my neck as the housekeeper’s words flashed through my mind when I asked her about the other assistants who had lived with him. “Assistants living here?” The confusion on her face grew bigger as she cleaned the dishware. “Mr Daxton doesn’t entertain his staff here nor have any of them lived here. You are a first, Miss Verena” My pulse quickened when memories of that one-night stand filled my head. He had promised never to let me go and like the sexually starved fool I was, I accepted being bound to him. I shouldn’t fault myself— But, the dynamics were crazy, he was Kian’s uncle, and worse, I didn’t even know what he was thinking. Was this all a game to him? Interest or pure affection? At the same time, would a thirty-seven-year-old have the time to play games with a twenty-five-year-old on the verge of a divorce? He didn’t seem like the type to play petty games with me. However, what he wanted from me was still something I struggled to understand. Before my thoughts could spiral into an endless loop, I moved away from the bed, deciding to squash the thoughts about Daxton’s intentions. I still wasn’t done arranging my things yet, some of my books were still stacked in a box at the entrance. Walking towards the door, I caught sight of myself in the mirror. I had on a black tube top, cream bum shorts as I slipped the hair band off my wrist and tied my hair into a ponytail. I reached for the doorknob, twisting it but the moment I pulled the door in, my heart almost leaped out of my throat seeing the man standing outside the door with his fist poised to knock. Daxton. His lips curled into a smile, his eyes not failing to wander down my body while the words rolled out of his tongue like he was addressing the most precious thing ever. “Hey—” Seeing him standing there with that lazy smile on his face, sent my heart skipping a beat. He looked like a mess. A hot one— with his suit hanging over his shoulder, the rest of his tie peaking from his trousers’ pocket and a few buttons of his shirt undone. I swallowed down the gasp. “Hi” “Mind if I come in?” I nodded, moving aside while he filled the space with his ripped muscles and that familiar scent of perfume that clung to him. Breathtaking. “Do you like the room?” Anxiety clawed at the back of my neck. “Mmm” He turned to look at me, eyes piquing with curiosity. “Why didn’t I receive a debit alert?” For a second, confusion made a full swirl in me until it suddenly hit me that he was talking about the black card that he had given me. As much as I wanted to get office wear since most of my clothes were too expensive for the role of an assistant, I couldn’t take it. It just felt wrong. He was already offering me $200k per year and without knowing his true intentions, taking more from him could end up bad. He was literally Kian’s uncle. What if he was worse or he was like those older men who saw younger women as prey? My hands moved to the back of my neck in anxiety. “I didn’t see the need for it—” He raised a brow. “Yet” I forced a smile. And that was the moment I noticed the shopping bags that he gripped. “Josh mentioned something about you muttering something about not having appropriate clothes to the office—“ His words trailed and he moved to the bed. “So, I got you this” My heart ground to a halt and my thoughts threatened to spiral again. Why was he doing all these things for me? He took one final glance at the room, and his hand slipped into his pocket. “Today must have been overwhelming for you so I’d leave you to rest” He offered me a smile, the kind that went straight to my heart and clenched it. “Goodnight,” He said, and was about walking past me when my words made him stop in his tracks. “Mr. Daxton, Uncle Daxton, or Daxton—“ I said and he turned. “Which would you prefer that I call you” His lips tilted in amusement and he huffed out a small laugh. “Anything that doesn’t have to do with you addressing me formally” “So, Daxton?” “Yeah, Daxton” I exhaled sharply and while I folded my hands behind me, tongue swiping up and down my right cheeks as I struggled to articulate my words, I could feel his eyes burning right into my soul. “Umm—” I trailed. “I thought about this deeply, like over and over again. Let’s say that my applying to your hotel for a job as an assistant was a coincidence…” Daxton cut in, blue eyes piercing deep into mine. “It isn’t a coincidence. Everything playing out right now isn’t one” His voice was low. My palm moved to my heart beating fast in my chest as I struggled to steel my breathing before it turned erratic. “The last time at Kian’s family house, you knew me and it meant that night, you recognized me as your nephew’s wife. Yet, you didn’t turn me away and now, I can’t help but question your intention towards me” He listened patiently. “I mean a normal being could have shamed me for lying about being single, you could have done a lot knowing who I was” A soft stretch stretched the corner of his mouth. “I don’t want to divulge on the things that I know but you deserve better than Kian. And I am better,” “I know a lot of things about you and know the way Kian has treated you these past few years. You are a pretty woman, an immature bum like my nephew doesn’t deserve you” My breathing turned ragged. “You think that I am pretty?” His eyes sparked with a clash of dark hunger and warmth. “The prettiest woman I have ever set eyes on,” He took a step towards me and my breath ceased. I swallowed, taking a step back. “I believe that what you want from me might be too much. Considering what Kian did to me, I don’t want to date, fall in love, or—“ A gasp escaped me because I was so lost in my words that I didn’t know he was now standing close to me. Those blue eyes searched mine before he huffed. “Love? That could come later. To put it plainly…” He reached for my palm, the heat from his seeping through mine. Our fingers entangled and while holding my eyes, he kissed the back of my palm. “…I am interested in you and when I tend to pick interest in something, I never let it go. I live and die for it,” My body grew taut, my heart racing rapidly as his fingers left mine and he gripped me by the shoulders. His eyes were locked with mine, guiding me until I found myself sitting at the edge of the bed. Slowly, he dropped to his knees, and not even once did his eyes leave mine as his fingers rested on my thigh and in that moment, it felt like my body was struck with jumper cables. I breathed hard and the urge to run my fingers through his hair clawed at me. Daxton leaned forward, his hair grazing my stomach and my knees locked when he trailed soft wet kisses every nerve tightening as his mouth moved lower and lower. My thighs trembled, heat pooling between them. He paused—holding my eyes before he kissed my pussy through the fabric and my head spun. My chest tightened, fist curling around the sheets as he planted soft kisses from my thighs down to my kneecap. “Instead of love, let’s do worship” My chest heaved slowly and I muttered. “Worship?” “Let me rock up your world and bring the world to your feet. You don’t need to do too much, all you have to do is breathe next to me, my love” His words melted into my bones, into my heart, and my existence. Suddenly, my phone buzzed and it was the perfect distraction I needed from this overwhelming tension. I reached for the phone next to me and that son of a gun—Kian. My face twisted and before I could process things, Daxton snatched it from me and turned it off. His eyes sparked with those same emotions as he pressed a final kiss to my kneecap. “Kian might be your first everything but I intend to be your last, so let me show you what it means for a man to worship you.”Daxton I wasn’t the type to be distracted at work, most importantly when critical board meetings were going on but while the finance manager discussed the effect the little scandal had on my hotel, my eyes wandered to the beautiful distraction across the glass panels. Verena. She leaned against the wall, eyes fixed on the tab that she scrolled through. On her first day of work, she outdid herself, ensuring that I kept to my schedule and setting things in place. A smile stretched the corners of my mouth as I leaned back in my seat, eyes sparking in amusement as they slithered down her body. She looked really dashing in those fitted pants that clung to her curves like a second skin and as serious issues were discussed in the boardroom, my thoughts crossed over to my imagination. In them, soft auburn curls fell over her shoulder and she was wearing my shirt with thigh-high white socks. Just the thought of her in that dashing image almost made a groan slip
Verena I didn't sleep a wink last night. How was I supposed to sleep when the sporadic beating of my chest refused to wane, each thump reminding me of the kisses he planted on my body, the way he looked into my eyes like I really meant something and when he drawled out the word ‘worship’, I couldn't breathe. The idea of it made me toss and turn in my bed. As much as the experience of it was foreign to me, I craved it. I could still feel that tingling sensation on my skin and— Enough. It was enough already. I shook my head—like it would shrug off the memories from last night— and decided to focus on getting ready for work. I took a large bite of the toast, before taking a sip of the hot chocolate coffee and I hated that I had ruined the beautiful swan latte art. This had to be the best coffee that I had had in a while. I tried to make my own breakfast because that had to be the least I could do, considering Daxton’s generosity. However, the chefs ushered me out, c

Daxton “Cute” A smile stretched the corner of my lips as I stared at the unaware picture Josh had taken of Verena with the caption ‘She’s settled in, sir.’ Words were not enough to describe the warmth that spread on my chest knowing that she was now close to me. While Verena thought that our story was over, I had spent the last two weeks decorating this room for her. I wanted to create a space where she was comfortable, a space better than her own home and now, I couldn't help but wonder if she loved the room. Was it to her taste? Suddenly, the smile on my face slowly faltered when a knock sounded on my office door. I twisted on the couch, watching as the door creaked open when the receptionist poked her head inside—eyes searching around until they landed on me. She straightened immediately, offering me a small smile. “You have a guest” “Who?” I raised a brow. “Mr—” Before she could finish, a familiar head of messy brown hair appeared behind her and the smile o
Verena’s P.O.V The only thing I wanted to do right now was find a cliff, scream out the top of my lungs and jump. How could the same man I was running from turn out to be the managing director? As if my situation wasn’t worse enough, I signed the contract because of those mesmerizing blue eyes veined with silver that locked with mine as heat pooled at the depths of my stomach while memories from that night flooded through my mind. Plus he mentioned something about living with him for five weekdays because of his busy schedule and like the fool I was, I accepted it. This was on me! If only I’d done the simplest research on the person I wanted to work for. Instead, my desperation for a job blinded me and brought me before the same person I wanted to escape. Even if I ended up taking the job, how were we supposed to keep things professional despite knowing the sexual tension between us? I ran a free hand through the back of my neck in exasperation, tossing the stale c
Daxton Dark brown eyes rimmed in thick dark lashes swept up to my face and the moment those spell-binding eyes caught mine, my heart made a beat against my ribcage. Her lush lips parted in shock, a small hiccup escaping her throat. I stifled a chuckle, walking past but not without drowning in the gardenia scent of her perfume. Fuck, I had missed her so much. I crossed over to the table, pulling out a seat for her—an action that I rarely did with past assistants. “Have your seat when you are ready for the interview” I said, taking my own seat while she took tiny steps towards me, her head ducked down. She fell onto the seat slowly as satisfaction curled inside of me because she was exactly where I wanted her to be. While my nephew struggled to find her, I knew the area she moved to, her apartment block, the gym center that she just registered in, and most importantly, where she did her grocery shopping. Despite knowing where she resided, I never approached her. Why?
