The midday sun had shifted, casting long, bruised shadows across the stone floor of the estate’s grand interior courtyard.

Nora walked swiftly through the servants' corridor, carrying a heavy stack of freshly laundered linens destined for the upper guest wing. Every muscle in her body protested the physical strain, but the burning pain in her arms was a welcome distraction from the heavy, suffocating weight pressing down on her soulmate bond. She could feel Julian’s distant presence—strong, resolute, and entirely walled off behind a fortress of pack duty and misguided self-righteousness.

As she approached the linen closets near the west wing, a pair of sharp, mocking voices cut through the quiet air, stopping her in her tracks.

"I don't know how mother puts up with her roaming the halls of the upper estate," Clara’s voice sneered from just around the corner, dripping with disdain. "Even if she's hidden away down below, she's a constant, irritating reminder of Julian's strange soft spot for defectives."

"Let her roam for now, Clara," Jessica replied smoothly, her tone laced with casual, venomous cruelty. "Her days of hiding in the shadows are numbered anyway. Once the seasonal gala arrangements are finalized by the end of the week, Julian will have no choice but to announce our formal side-mate pairing. The council is already leaning entirely toward me. By next month, this entire estate will recognize who truly rules beside the Alpha."

Nora froze behind the heavy stone pillar, the stack of linens clutched tightly against her chest as her knuckles turned white. Her breath hitched, not out of fear, but out of a cold, sharp realization that cut deeper than any physical blow. They weren't just trying to humiliate her in private anymore; they were actively engineering her total erasure, rewriting her place in the pack while Julian sat blindly in his war room, trusting the very vipers sinking their fangs into his life.

"Do you think Julian suspects anything at all?" Clara asked, her footsteps pausing just feet away from Nora's hiding spot.

"Julian sees what we allow him to see," Jessica laughed softly, a sound like glass sliding over ice. "He's so consumed by his grand illusion of 'protecting' his poor, presumed broken soulmate that he can't see the obvious truth right in front of his face. Men like him are terribly easy to manage when you stroke their ego and feed their savior complex."

The footsteps moved away down the corridor, fading into the quiet murmur of the estate staff attending to their duties.

Nora stepped out from behind the pillar, her hazel eyes staring coldly into the empty hallway. The submission and exhaustion that had weighed her down for months suddenly began to crystallize into something much colder, much harder. The game they were playing was rigged, and Julian was too blind to save himself—let alone her.

If they wanted a silent victim to push around until the gala, they were about to find out that some shadows hide far more than broken pieces.

  • In His Ruins    The Roots Of The Mountain

The howling winds of the blizzard eventually spent themselves against the granite backbone of the Outer Ridge, leaving behind a crisp, crystalline morning where the rising sun turned the deep drifts of snow into an unbroken sea of glittering diamonds. The air outside was bitingly, breath-catchingly cold, but the sky above was a brilliant, cloudless expanse of winter blue that stretched endlessly across the horizon.Inside the cabin, the heavy cast-iron stove radiated a steady, comfortable heat that chased away any lingering chill from the night before, filling the air with the rich, comforting scent of roasted chicory and burning cedar. Julian stood by the kitchen counter, quietly pouring two steaming mugs of spiced herbal tea before walking over to hand one to Nora, who was already up and looking out the frost-fringed window at the breathtaking expanse of their domain."The snow capped the entire upper pass," Nora observed, taking a gentle sip of the warm tea as she watched the smoke

  • In His Ruins    The First Snowfall

The first true blizzard of the winter season hit the Outer Ridge three days after the skirmish at the river bend, sweeping down from the high northern peaks with a terrifying, howling fury that transformed the entire mountain landscape into an unbroken, blinding expanse of white. The gale-force winds battered the exterior timber walls of the cabin with relentless force, driving fine particles of drift ice against the heavy oak shutters and screaming through the upper pine canopy like a pack of hunting wolves.Yet inside, protected by thick double-hewn insulation, the heavy roaring hearth fire, and the deep, abiding warmth of the home, the storm felt entirely distant. The cabin was a sanctuary of amber light, woodsmoke, and profound peace.Julian stood by the north-facing window, his massive frame motionless as he watched the thick, blinding sheets of snow swirl past the glass, completely erasing the view of the lower switchback. Satisfied that the heavy iron shutters were barred tight

  • In His Ruins    Silence After The Storm

The echoes of the confrontation at the river bend faded quickly into the rushing roar of the white water, leaving behind a profound, heavy quiet that settled over the gorge. Down on the frozen gravel path, the mercenary column did not wait for a second warning. Broken by the sudden flash of northern power from above and the cold, unyielding wall of the ex-Alpha’s presence, the remaining enforcers dropped their weapons, turned on their heels, and scrambled back down the trail in a frantic, disorganized retreat.Julian remained on the ledge for a long moment, his dark eyes scanning the lower switchback until the last dark figure vanished around the distant timberline. Satisfied that the threat was completely neutralized, he exhaled a slow, controlled breath, the lethal tension slipping from his broad shoulders as he turned back toward Nora. She was standing near the edge of the stone parapet, the brilliant golden aura of her northern bloodline slowly receding beneath her skin, leaving h

  • In His Ruins    The Line At The River Bend

The morning mist clung stubbornly to the steep limestone walls of the lower gorge, freezing into a jagged crust of frost that coated the exposed pine roots and the gray shale paths. Down at the river bend, where the rushing white water carved a violent crescent around the base of the mountain, the air was dead silent save for the thunderous roar of the current and the occasional sharp crack of frozen twigs underfoot.Julian crouched behind a natural stone parapet fifty feet above the trail, his dark eyes locked on the narrow defile below. He wore his heavy combat harness, his skin weathered and taut, completely still in the biting alpine wind. Behind him, spaced strategically along the jagged ridge line, were four veteran guards from the settlement, their rifles resting across moss-covered boulders with absolute, disciplined patience. They didn't speak; they didn't shift their weight. They were an extension of the mountain itself—silent, immovable, and lethal.A mile down the valley,

  • In His Ruins    The Gathering Storm

The seventy-two hours before the first scheduled patrol down to the river bend were marked by a grim, methodical efficiency that transformed the Outer Ridge from a domestic sanctuary into a fortress of absolute readiness. There was no panic, no frantic whispering in the dark; only the rhythmic, purposeful sound of whetstones scraping against steel and the heavy thud of timber beams being hauled to reinforce the lower defensive perimeter.Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was thick with a quiet, solemn focus. Julian stood by the heavy oak worktable, methodically oiling the leather straps of his battle harness before sliding his heavy hunting knife into its sheath with a satisfying, metallic click. Every movement was economic, lethal, and entirely devoid of hesitation.Nora sat by the hearth, her fingers steady as she packed a small leather medical pouch with antiseptic tinctures, heavy-duty stitching thread, and compressed herbal bandages. Despite the brewing conflict outside their door

  • In His Ruins    The Iron And The Oath

The heavy oak door clicked shut, sealing out the biting mountain wind as the envoy stepped into the radiant warmth of the cabin. Julian moved with practiced efficiency, pouring a cup of steaming black tea from the iron kettle and handing it directly to the travel-weary soldier before turning his attention back to the sealed leather cylinder resting on the wooden table. The envoy sank gratefully into a wooden chair, wrapping his cold-bitten hands around the ceramic mug and letting out a long, ragged sigh. "I didn't think I'd find the ridge standing," the soldier admitted, his voice raw from the altitude and cold. "Word down in the lowlands is that the western trade routes were cut off by early snows, and that the mountain passes were locked down tight.""The passes are locked," Julian replied evenly, leaning his hip against the edge of the heavy table, his arms crossed over his chest. "Which is why I want to know exactly how you tracked us through four feet of drift ice without setting
