Chapter 3

Author: Goodtale
"You people get seafood, yet when it comes to my parents, you call Pac Burger good food?" I snapped at them.

Julie shot to her feet. "Am I wrong? What gives those two shameless old people the right to spend my daughter's money on hamburgers?"

My voice rose. "What do you mean by spending your daughter's money? Haven't I been spending money on you two this whole time?

"I spend my entire 13,000-dollar monthly salary on this household! What's wrong with my parents wanting to have a decent meal for once?"

The moment the words left my mouth, a wave of bitterness washed over me, and my eyes got so hot they ached.

Amelia's salary only covered her own car payments. Not one cent of her money ever came to me.

The mortgage was 5,000 dollars a month, and I covered all the household expenses. On top of that, Dale and Julie were ill every other week and needed to be hospitalized.

If I hadn't been so short on money, I never would've even made my parents put up with Amelia's attitude for three whole days.

Dale threw his phone, his face black as thunder. "Watch your tone! You go home for a few days, and now you think you can do whatever you want?"

Julie shoved at me, hard. "You married my daughter! So what if we spend some of your money? What, you're saying I shouldn't eat your food? You want me dead, is that it?"

I flung her hands off me. The next second, Amelia grabbed a glass from the coffee table and hurled it at me.

My temple began to throb. Blood ran down my forehead, and my ears rang so loudly I could barely hear anything else.

She jabbed a finger right in my face. "Kenneth, I'm warning you. I married you so you'd take care of my parents, not so you could bully them!

"If you ever lay a hand on my mom again, don't expect me to go easy on you!"

A loud ringing filled my head. Julie shot me a mocking look, then sat back down and went back to watching TV. Dale scoffed as he picked up his phone.

As for Amelia, she turned and walked into the kitchen. I stood there for a long time, but not one of them paid me any attention.

Pressing a hand over my temple, I went to the bedroom.

Julie's voice sounded from behind me. "What did I tell you? Men are all scumbags. If you don't keep them on a short leash, they'll walk all over you. You have to put them in their place before they learn to behave."

I sat in my room for an hour. When I came back out, I held up my phone screen for them to see. "I've booked an ocean-view room that costs 2,200 dollars a night for three nights.

"Have a look and see if this meets your standards."

Dale and Julie exchanged a glance. Julie couldn't keep the corners of her mouth from curling up. They clearly thought they'd put me in my place with what they did.

I turned to Amelia and said, "For the first meal, we'll have king crab. Then some caviar for your parents' health.

"As for the second meal, we'll have oysters and scallops. They're nutritious. Since Julie wants salmon, I asked them to prepare it fresh."

Amelia's tone softened. She nodded. "Fine. You arrange all that."

I kept scrolling through my phone and making the payments. "I've also booked activities like scuba diving and boat trips. If we're going, we might as well make the most of it."

Surprise crossed Amelia's face. "Do you even have money left?"

"I asked the company to advance me six months' worth of salary."

I paused, then added, "It's just that I might have to pitch in a little less around here from now on."

Amelia said in a gentle tone, "What are you talking about? We're family. You really think I'd let you go hungry?"

She reached toward my injured temple. "Does it still hurt?"

I turned my head away, avoiding her touch. She sighed. "Honestly, you can be so stubborn. Don't argue with me like that again, okay?"

As I nodded, I said in a softer tone, "You're right. I should understand that once we're married, our little family comes first. I shouldn't meddle so much in my parents' business.

"I was wrong before for insisting on everything being fair and saying we should split the long holiday between our families. Good thing you knew better, and we only spent money on Pac Burger. At least we didn't waste any money."

Amelia said with a smile, "I'm glad you finally understand. Everything I save, I save for this family."

Julie's expression relaxed, though she still kept her nose in the air.

In the spring of the second year after my divorce, I got promoted to department head. My salary went from 13,000 dollars to 22,000 dollars a month. When HR handed me the new contract, I read it three times. Going from 13,000 dollars to 22,000 dollars meant a 9,000-dollar raise—and 9,000 dollars was a big deal to me.That was close to what I'd needed when my mom was in the hospital, when I couldn't pay and had to borrow 10,000 dollars from a coworker. It was more than what I'd been missing when my dad turned 60, and all I could give him was a cake. It was enough to buy two of the coats I'd wanted last year but couldn't bring myself to splurge on.I moved out of my rental and bought a small apartment near work that had two bedrooms and a living room.I went alone to sign the contract. When the agent asked whose name to put on it, I answered, "Mine."I handed over my ID, and when my pen touched the paper, my hand didn't shake one bit. After signing the contract, I sat alone in

I ignored Julie. The next day, security talked her into leaving. On the third day, she was waiting for me at the entrance to my apartment building.I saw her as soon as I stepped outside. She looked a lot older than she had a month ago. Her hair had turned mostly gray, her back was hunched, and that cashmere sweater of hers was pilling."Kenneth."The way she said my name was so gentle that I barely recognized her voice. "I just want to have a word with you.""Ma'am, if you have something to say, do it here."She froze for a moment. I'd called her by her name for five years, after all.Julie tried a different approach. "Kenny, I know I haven't treated you well in the past. You and Amelia should get back together."I said nothing in response."Amelia knows she messed up. She's been bringing her own lunch to work every day and has lost over 15 pounds. Come back, and you can still have the final say in the family."I've accepted your parents, too. From now on, whenever they visit

The divorce went through faster than I'd expected. We had no children, and I bought the house before we got married, so it wasn't subject to division. There was exactly 573,000 dollars in the account. 286,500 dollars went to her, and the rest was mine.My lawyer asked if I wanted to fight for more. He said that since I'd covered almost all the household expenses for five years, I'd have a solid case for claiming a larger share.I told him there was no need and to just split the money down the middle. My lawyer was a man in his 40s. When he heard that, he took off his glasses and studied me for a moment."I've handled a lot of these cases. By this point, most people would want to get as much as they can. So why don't you want to?"I told him I wanted a clean break. "Every extra cent I try to get from her means one more reason to stay tangled up with her. I don't want anything to do with her anymore."He nodded and put his glasses back on. "Alright. Then we'll keep things as clean

Amelia stood there frozen for three seconds, and in those three seconds, a lot ran through my mind. I thought about everything I'd been through over the past five years. She laughed all of a sudden. "Divorce?""Yes."She pointed at me, her finger trembling. "Kenneth Chambers, you took my money, threw out my stuff, forced my parents to stay in a hotel, and now you want a divorce?""That's right.""Who the hell do you think you are?" she shouted, and every head in the lobby turned.I simply stared at her calmly. She took two steps toward me, getting right up in my face."When I married you, what did your family have? You were a country bumpkin whose family lived in a shack. And how much did your parents even make in a whole year? I did you a favor by marrying you!"Staring at her, I said, "You're right. My family lives in the countryside. But my parents have never spent a single cent of your money."As for when your mother needed to be hospitalized, I was the one who put down th

I didn't call or text back. I just spent the three final days of the long holiday in Koroville. After checking out the beach on day one, we visited the pier on day two. On the third day, I dragged my mom to the mall and bought her two complete sets of new clothes. While trying on clothes, Mom kept checking the price tags. "Kenneth, this is way too expensive.""Just wear them, Mom."She stood in front of the mirror in her new clothes for a long time. The woman in the mirror stood with her back straight. Dad was smoking outside. When he saw Mom come out, he froze for a moment."Wow."That was all he said. Mom blushed and gave him a playful smack. On the morning of the fourth day, we planned to take the subway to the train station. It was Mom's first time on the subway. When the gates swung open, she didn't dare walk through, so I took her hand and showed her how to tap her card.On the escalator, she gripped the handrail with both hands for dear life. "How does this stairca

I didn't reply, simply letting my phone buzz on the table all night long.Amelia's messages kept coming in. "What is the meaning of this, Kenneth Chambers? My parents have been stuck waiting at the airport for three hours.""You took my money! Don't think you can just run off with it. If you don't give the money back, I'll make sure you can't keep your job."The last message came in at 2:00 am. "Kenneth, don't force my hand."I flipped my phone screen-side down and went to take a shower.By the time I came out, it was almost dawn. I went over every moment of the past five years in my head. When I was done, I opened the closet.Amelia's clothes took up two-thirds of the space. Her clothes hung by color, her dresses were tucked in garment bags, and her heels were lined up in pairs on the shelves.I'd bought every last one of them with money I'd saved up.I took all the clothes down one piece at a time, folded them, and packed them into cardboard boxes. Even more stuff was i
