Chapter 2

Author: Goodtale
I said, "If you haven't bought the tickets yet, I can get them now. I can book everything right on my phone."

Amelia shot me a glare. "I've got it all planned out. Quit worrying about it."

Just as we finished eating, her phone rang.

"It's from work," she said.

By the time she finished the call, the sun was already setting. Amelia had this easy smile on her face, as if nothing had happened at all.

"Sorry, Adam, Patty. Something urgent came up at work. Let's call it a day and try again tomorrow."

…

On the third morning, we pulled up outside Pac Burger again.

I sat there in the car, shaking from head to toe. "We're going home."

Amelia turned to look at me. "Fine. Don't blame me for being a bad host to your parents when you're the one refusing to eat."

After dropping my parents off, Amelia impatiently shoved me toward the car. "Let's hurry up and go. Their three days are up."

The second she got in the car, she was like a completely different person. She started humming to herself, drumming the beat on the steering wheel with her fingers.

"Book an ocean-view suite at Walabi first, one with a balcony overlooking the ocean. My dad loves sitting out there with his morning coffee.

"And get in touch with the local market about the seafood. Make sure everything is wild-caught. My dad's got a picky palate. He'd taste the difference right away."

My phone screen lit up. It was a message from my mom.

"Kenny, you know, I never liked traveling anyway. We get by just fine every year. The food from Pac Burger was really tasty, though."

Then came a message from Dad.

"Son, I've had my fill. I've never even had a hamburger before. Thank Amy for us. You two go enjoy yourselves with her folks."

As I stared at the two messages, my eyes suddenly burned, tears welling up.

Amelia glanced over and laughed. "Are you seriously that excited? You're tearing up the moment you hear the word 'Walabi'?"

It felt like there was a lump in my throat. "You want to take your parents to Walabi, get them an ocean-view suite and jewelry, but when it comes to my parents, all they get is Pac Burger?"

The smile vanished from her face in an instant. She didn't say a word as she kept her eyes fixed on the road ahead.

I stared at her, continuing, "My parents raised me. Don't they even deserve one decent meal?"

She slammed her hand down on the horn and floored the gas. My head jerked back and hit the headrest with a thud.

"My mom worked hard all her life. Now that I've finally made something of myself, I want her to enjoy the good life for once. What's wrong with that?"

I gasped for breath, my chest so tight it felt like it was about to explode. "I want my parents to have a good life too, so what's wrong with that?"

Amelia let out a cold snort. "Your parents have spent their whole lives farming. What kind of good life do you think they're suited for? They're born to toil.

"Letting them experience the good life will only shorten their lives. You'll just make them die sooner!"

The more she talked, the more worked up she got. She smacked the steering wheel as she spoke. "Besides, didn't they look pretty happy eating at Pac Burger?

"They acted like gluttons! They didn't leave a single crumb behind. They would've licked the fries' packaging clean if they could!"

My parents hated wasting food or throwing things away. But somehow, she twisted that into them being gluttons.

Neither of us said another word for the rest of the ride back. The tension in the car was unbearable.

When we got home, my father-in-law, Dale Hurst, and my mother-in-law, Julie Bartlett, were on the couch with their arms crossed. "Well, look who's finally decided to come home."

Julie sneered. "I was starting to think I didn't have a daughter anymore.”

Amelia elbowed me hard in the ribs, signaling me to apologize. But I stood there without moving.

Julie continued, "So, where did you take your in-laws? Did you have a nice time?"

Amelia answered, "We didn't go anywhere. We just ate at Pac Burger twice."

Julie's face softened a little. "What's the point of giving them such good food? A few leafy greens are plenty for the likes of country folk like them."

That was it. I couldn't hold back my anger anymore.

In the spring of the second year after my divorce, I got promoted to department head. My salary went from 13,000 dollars to 22,000 dollars a month. When HR handed me the new contract, I read it three times. Going from 13,000 dollars to 22,000 dollars meant a 9,000-dollar raise—and 9,000 dollars was a big deal to me.That was close to what I'd needed when my mom was in the hospital, when I couldn't pay and had to borrow 10,000 dollars from a coworker. It was more than what I'd been missing when my dad turned 60, and all I could give him was a cake. It was enough to buy two of the coats I'd wanted last year but couldn't bring myself to splurge on.I moved out of my rental and bought a small apartment near work that had two bedrooms and a living room.I went alone to sign the contract. When the agent asked whose name to put on it, I answered, "Mine."I handed over my ID, and when my pen touched the paper, my hand didn't shake one bit. After signing the contract, I sat alone in

I ignored Julie. The next day, security talked her into leaving. On the third day, she was waiting for me at the entrance to my apartment building.I saw her as soon as I stepped outside. She looked a lot older than she had a month ago. Her hair had turned mostly gray, her back was hunched, and that cashmere sweater of hers was pilling."Kenneth."The way she said my name was so gentle that I barely recognized her voice. "I just want to have a word with you.""Ma'am, if you have something to say, do it here."She froze for a moment. I'd called her by her name for five years, after all.Julie tried a different approach. "Kenny, I know I haven't treated you well in the past. You and Amelia should get back together."I said nothing in response."Amelia knows she messed up. She's been bringing her own lunch to work every day and has lost over 15 pounds. Come back, and you can still have the final say in the family."I've accepted your parents, too. From now on, whenever they visit

The divorce went through faster than I'd expected. We had no children, and I bought the house before we got married, so it wasn't subject to division. There was exactly 573,000 dollars in the account. 286,500 dollars went to her, and the rest was mine.My lawyer asked if I wanted to fight for more. He said that since I'd covered almost all the household expenses for five years, I'd have a solid case for claiming a larger share.I told him there was no need and to just split the money down the middle. My lawyer was a man in his 40s. When he heard that, he took off his glasses and studied me for a moment."I've handled a lot of these cases. By this point, most people would want to get as much as they can. So why don't you want to?"I told him I wanted a clean break. "Every extra cent I try to get from her means one more reason to stay tangled up with her. I don't want anything to do with her anymore."He nodded and put his glasses back on. "Alright. Then we'll keep things as clean

Amelia stood there frozen for three seconds, and in those three seconds, a lot ran through my mind. I thought about everything I'd been through over the past five years. She laughed all of a sudden. "Divorce?""Yes."She pointed at me, her finger trembling. "Kenneth Chambers, you took my money, threw out my stuff, forced my parents to stay in a hotel, and now you want a divorce?""That's right.""Who the hell do you think you are?" she shouted, and every head in the lobby turned.I simply stared at her calmly. She took two steps toward me, getting right up in my face."When I married you, what did your family have? You were a country bumpkin whose family lived in a shack. And how much did your parents even make in a whole year? I did you a favor by marrying you!"Staring at her, I said, "You're right. My family lives in the countryside. But my parents have never spent a single cent of your money."As for when your mother needed to be hospitalized, I was the one who put down th

I didn't call or text back. I just spent the three final days of the long holiday in Koroville. After checking out the beach on day one, we visited the pier on day two. On the third day, I dragged my mom to the mall and bought her two complete sets of new clothes. While trying on clothes, Mom kept checking the price tags. "Kenneth, this is way too expensive.""Just wear them, Mom."She stood in front of the mirror in her new clothes for a long time. The woman in the mirror stood with her back straight. Dad was smoking outside. When he saw Mom come out, he froze for a moment."Wow."That was all he said. Mom blushed and gave him a playful smack. On the morning of the fourth day, we planned to take the subway to the train station. It was Mom's first time on the subway. When the gates swung open, she didn't dare walk through, so I took her hand and showed her how to tap her card.On the escalator, she gripped the handrail with both hands for dear life. "How does this stairca

I didn't reply, simply letting my phone buzz on the table all night long.Amelia's messages kept coming in. "What is the meaning of this, Kenneth Chambers? My parents have been stuck waiting at the airport for three hours.""You took my money! Don't think you can just run off with it. If you don't give the money back, I'll make sure you can't keep your job."The last message came in at 2:00 am. "Kenneth, don't force my hand."I flipped my phone screen-side down and went to take a shower.By the time I came out, it was almost dawn. I went over every moment of the past five years in my head. When I was done, I opened the closet.Amelia's clothes took up two-thirds of the space. Her clothes hung by color, her dresses were tucked in garment bags, and her heels were lined up in pairs on the shelves.I'd bought every last one of them with money I'd saved up.I took all the clothes down one piece at a time, folded them, and packed them into cardboard boxes. Even more stuff was i
