The Hating Game

Miley’s POV

Liv and I were on our way to the mall. Ever since we met each other and we exchanged numbers we actually hit it right off. She’s sweet, quirky and funny. She was able to crack my tough little heart and found a way to make me less anti social around her. Her energy was very positive and contagious that it was hard acting nonchalant with her. She made it easy for me to be her friend and I adored her for it.

I needed some things for school and she offered to tag along with me to the mall so we could get them together. “Miley I can’t wait for you to start the semester with me at brixley high” she said in excitement causing me to dread it more.

“Honestly Liv, I love you but I’m freaking nervous. What if I don’t fit in?” I said simply

“Oh please you worry too much Miley, you have me. Of course you’ll fit in” she encouraged giving me a little hug.

“Thanks Liv.”

“So tell me, what do you think about this dress?” She asked holding up a white mini sundress in hand as I gave her a little smile. We were both in the dress section of the store as we took a quick detour from the stationary section to check out the new dresses that were currently being sold.

“It’s okay, I think it’ll look really nice on you” i answered.

“You think so? Let me try it on to see if it fits” she said excitedly walking into the changing rooms while I waited for her.

The speakers suddenly started playing a classical tune which immediately took me back to the time when I used to dance ballet.

Back when I was a little girl, my dad signed me up for ballet classes and I was great at it. I even continued it until high school but then when the whole cheating scandal of my dad started I stopped dancing. He suddenly redrew from us and stop coming for my recitals and with that I slowly became discouraged because he was my biggest cheerleader and he no longer wanted to cheer me on to dance. It hurt when I finally had to quit dancing because I could no longer keep up with the steps since I was so out of touch with my parents.

“So what do you think?” Liv asked as she came out of the changing room and twirling around in her dress.

“It looks amazing on you Liv, you really should buy it” I answered giving her a thumbs up as she squealed happily.

“I am! Give me a second while I pay okay” she said as she ran off to remove the dress so she could pay for it while I waited for her to be done with everything.

While I waited I noticed him walk through the doors of the store looking breath taking as usual. It was the guy from liv’s house who was obsessed with rubbing his dog’s fur. The guy who looked amazing shirtless and seeing him up close completely took me by surprise. He looked great in blue low rise jeans and a grey sweatshirt with his hair fanning his facial features. He immediately noticed me seated on one of the chairs as his face looked surprised before turning into that of recognition.

Remembering what he did the last time, my anger resurfaced as I scowled heavily at him noticing the tiny smirk on his face at my reactions to seeing him again.

“I think I’ve seen you before” he said as he walked towards where I sat holding eye contact with me causing me to shiver. He was a gorgeous young man and I didn’t like how much I found him attractive because I could already tell that his attitude sucked balls.

“I think I would remember the guy that flipped me off” i answered holding his stare as his lips twitched at that seeming to find my confidence amusing.

“I had to, considering you were staring down my body like a creep” he continued giving me a smirk seeming to want a reaction from me.

I scoffed at that giving him an incredulous look. “Excuse me, I wasn’t staring at you like a creep” I defended.

“Seemed like you were darling” he teased giving me coy smile causing me to fume in anger at his way of messing with me.

“Don’t call me that! I’m not your darling and I don’t even know you” I snapped at him.

He just chuckled at that seeming to find everything I was doing fun. “You’re quite feisty. I like that.” He muttered as he pushed his hair back up from his forehead.

“Okay, since we’ve cleared that you’re a total weirdo who doesn’t know when and where to put on a shirt without drawing attention to himself can you please leave me now?” I asked feigning a fake smile causing him to smile coyly as he leaned in closer to my completly surprising me.

“Did you like what you saw darling? I know you did. I saw you drooling that night” he whispered with his pout lips not that far from my face causing me to push him away in vexation.

“Get off me!” I shouted in anger as he laughed at my reaction while my heart wouldn’t beating fast at how close he was to me.

Not long after Liv walked towards us as she stared at the guy in surprise. “Miley, how do you know my brother?” She asks causing me to snap my neck in shock to look at her.

“Brother?!” I ask

“Yeah. He’s my older brother, with just a year though.” She answered as I turned to look at him stare at me in mischief clearly enjoying watching me freak out.

“Hi darling, nice to meet you. I’m Jordan” he introduced flashing me a smirk.

“He’s a senior at our school Miley, how did you two meet?” She asks surprised.

“Oh we? I just came across her today and I couldn’t help myself but talk to her. She’s exactly the type of girl I go for. Skinny, pretty and very feisty” he said as he stared intensely at me causing me to feel some type of way. He wasn’t looking at me with mischief anymore but his eyes were filled with lust mixed with intrigue. I could feel his hard stares and it made me shiver in slight anticipation at what was coming.

“Jordan please, my friends are off limits.” Liv said cutting the tension between us that wafted in the air. He just scoffed at that as if he could care less shrugging his shoulders.

“Well then tell your friend to stay the fuck away from me, if they don’t want me on their radar” be warned as he turned to give me one last look before finally walking out of the store.

Jordan’s POV — Morning LightI can’t remember the last time I woke up feeling… calm. The light spilling through my window is soft, gold around the edges, like the world decided to go easy on me for once.No hangover. No bad dreams. Just the faint ache of last night still sitting somewhere between my chest and my ribs.Miley.Her name alone feels like an exhale. The way she looked at me when I told her about my dad—it wasn’t pity. It wasn’t fear.It was… understanding.Like she’d seen the ugliest part of me and decided to stay anyway. That thought alone could ruin me in the best way.I toss on a hoodie and head downstairs. Scott’s already there, sprawled on the couch with a bowl of cereal balanced on his knee. He glances up when I walk in, eyes still glued to his phone.“Morning, lover boy,” he says without missing a beat.I groan. “Please don’t start.”“Oh, I’m starting.” He smirks. “Liv texted Miley last night. Said you showed up, had your little heart-to-heart moment. Cute. Very Nic

Miley’s POV — After the StormWhen Jordan texted that he’d seen his dad, my stomach twisted so hard it almost hurt.He hadn’t talked about that man much—just enough for me to know the name alone left scars. So when I saw the message “Like I can finally breathe again,” I didn’t hesitate.I told him to come over. Now, sitting on the porch steps, the night hums around me.Crickets. The faint hiss of streetlights. The air smells of rain and salt from the coast.I tug my sweater tighter, heart tripping when headlights sweep across the driveway. His car slows to a stop. When he climbs out, the shadows hide most of his face, but I can still see the wear—the tired slope of his shoulders, the quiet in his eyes.He doesn’t say anything at first. Just walks toward me and drops down beside me on the step. For a moment, all we do is sit there, our knees brushing, both pretending the silence isn’t full of things we don’t know how to say. Then I whisper, “So… you did it.”He nods slowly. “Yeah. Jordan’s POV — The Man Who LeftThe diner looked exactly the same.Same flickering neon sign, same squeaky door hinges, same red leather booths that had seen better days. I used to come here with my dad on Sundays when I was a kid. He’d order pancakes and call me “champ,” and I’d pretend not to notice the smell of whiskey hiding under his breath. Now, sitting here, waiting for him to show up after all these years, all I could taste was metal, the sharp, bitter edge of old memories.I kept tapping my thumb against the table, trying to drown out the noise in my head. I told myself I didn’t care. That I was just doing this to end it.To prove to myself that I wasn’t twelve anymore. That he didn’t get to haunt me.But when the bell above the diner door chimed and he walked in , the world stopped anyway. He looked… smaller. Not the giant I remembered yelling in the kitchen, breaking things, breaking us. His hair had gone gray, and his clothes hung looser than I remembered. His eyes, God, h

Miley’s POV Confessions Over CoffeeThe sunlight the next morning felt like it was mocking me, too bright, too cheerful for what last night had been.I hadn’t slept much. My mind kept circling back to the image of Jordan standing at the boardwalk, rain dripping off his jacket, his voice rough and unsteady as he said “He showed up.”His father. The way he said it had carved something into my chest, pain that wasn’t mine but somehow still hurt.So here I was now, sitting in Liv’s kitchen, nursing a cup of overly sweet coffee she’d made while humming to some song playing off her phone. She was always like that in the morning, effortlessly light, even when the world tilted.“Okay,” she said, leaning against the counter with a spoon dangling between her fingers. “You texted me last night about Jordan showing up at the beach and then ghosted me. You better spill.”I blinked, taking a long sip. “He didn’t show up at the beach. We… kind of ran into each other.”Liv raised a brow. “You ran in

Jordan’s POV — The Knock at the DoorThe storm had rolled in without warning.Thunder cracked in the distance, the kind that made the whole house hum — or maybe that was just the way my chest felt when I opened the door and saw the ghost standing on the porch. My father. He wasn’t supposed to exist anymore — at least not in my world. I’d buried him years ago, the same day he packed his bags, slammed the door, and left behind a broken wife, a crying daughter, and a boy who had to grow up too fast. But there he was. Soaked, older, his once-broad shoulders sagging under a coat that looked a size too big. His hair had thinned, grey threading through the black, and his eyes — the same eyes I saw in the mirror every morning — were dull, rimmed red, and searching for something he didn’t deserve.“Jordan,” he said softly, like saying my name could undo the last ten years. My throat dried up. The storm didn’t help. The air was thick with rain and something else — anger, disbelief, a kind of gr
