Kael

The messenger from the River Clan arrived at midday with gifts he did not need and a smile I did not trust.

Lord Soren Hale was thirty-six, polished, and dangerous in the way of men who won territory with marriages as often as with blades. He bowed correctly in my hall, praised the border response to the recent probes, and only then let his attention drift, too precisely to Liana standing two steps behind my right shoulder.

“So the rumors have shape,” Soren said. “A Veyne daughter awakened rarely. The court gossip machine rarely under-sells.”

Liana did not shrink. Seraphina had dressed her for visibility today on purpose: dark training leathers, hair bound, the look of someone inside the war structure rather than hidden above it. My wolf hated every foreign eye that touched her. I kept my face clean.

“State your business,” I said.

Soren’s smile held. “Alliance talk. The southern coin trails run through river docks my men control. I can choke them. In exchange, I want formal recognition of shared patrol rights on the lower ridge, and an introduction.” His gaze returned to Liana. “If her bloodline is half what the old texts imply, every major house will come courting with softer language than mine. I prefer to be early.”

The hall went still.

Adrian’s hand shifted near his belt. Not a draw. A readiness.

“She is not a market opening,” I said.

“She is a political fact.” Soren’s tone stayed pleasant. “And facts get claimed, King Draven. By mates, by treaties, or by whoever builds the stronger cage first. I’m offering a cage with silk and docks.”

Liana’s voice cut across the hall before I could.

“Speak to me when you speak about me.”

Soren looked almost delighted. “Even better.”

Liana

They put me in the conversation like a blade laid on the table, visible, valuable, contested.

Soren Hale had the kind of handsomeness that practiced itself in mirrors. His eyes moved too carefully to be casual. When Kael steered the meeting toward maps and routes, Soren allowed it for exactly six minutes before returning to me.

“Dual wolf signatures are said to stabilize under strong pair-bonds,” he said, as if discussing weather. “If you are unmated in law, several houses will interpret that as an invitation. Some will ask. Some will not.”

Kael’s power pressed against the room. “Enough.”

“I’m clarifying the risk.” Soren opened an empty palm. “You can hate the manner. The content remains true. Hunters are not the only ones who can read old doctrine. If Black Ridge ends with her still unmarked and unpledged, the next visitors will not all be as polite as I am.”

My stomach turned. Not from attraction. From the map he was drawing around my body without permission.

“You came here to buy a route and leave with a claim option,” I said.

“Yes.” Honest, at least. “Is that worse than being kept as a secret in a king’s private wing while your name circulates in enemy letters?”

Kael stepped forward. The temperature in the hall seemed to drop. “You overstep.”

Soren finally looked at him fully. “Do I? Because from the river, it looks like Draven has already made a second kind of claim he has not yet been willing to publish. Packs talk, Kael. Scent talks louder. If Elias Veyne does not know, he is the only one still comfortable in ignorance.”

The bond between Kael and me jolted hard enough that my breath caught. Soren saw that too. Of course he did. Men like him collected micro-reactions the way other men collected debts.

Adrian interjected cleanly. “Your dock proposal can be reviewed by the border command. Your interest in Lady Veyne has declined.”

Soren inclined his head, still smiling. “For today.” He set a sealed packet on the table. “Dock schedules and two names tied to southern coins. A gift. So you remember I can be useful.” His eyes found mine one last time. “If Black Ridge goes badly, my offer remains. Better a known bargain than an extraction bag over your head.”

He left with his escort before Kael’s control could become public violence.

I did not speak until the courtyard cleared.

Then I turned on the nearest wall and hit it hard enough to send pain up my arm. Plaster dust sifted down. Adrian said nothing. Liana said less.

“He walked into my hall and auditioned for your future,” I said.

“Yes.” Liana’s voice was steady, pale around the edges. “And he only said out loud what your council already danced around. Unmarked, I am an open contest. Marked by you, I am a political detonation with my father. Either way, I am not invisible.”

Seraphina, silent until then, picked up Soren’s packet without opening it. “He is not wrong about doctrine. Pair-bond stabilization appears in three separate fragments. That doesn’t mean he should be allowed near you. It means the doctrine is moving again in living mouths.”

Adrian exhaled. “Also means Black Ridge won’t only be about Elias. If Soren knows the meet timing, others might.”

My head snapped toward him. “Who logged the ridge response?”

“Stewards on the secure desk. Inner circle. And anyone those men speak to when they drink.” Adrian’s expression darkened. “I’ll scrub the channel list again. But the window is already narrow.”

Liana folded her arms. “So we go to my father with hunters outside, a river lord circling, and a court that can already smell what we are.”

“Yes,” I said.

“And you still think the first full truth he hears should land on open ground in three days?”

I looked at her, truly looked and saw not only the woman I had taken to bed but the lever every ambitious house would try to pull until she either broke or became sovereign enough to stop them.

“I think,” I said carefully, “that if I mark you now to shut Soren’s mouth, I prove his accusation that I handle you as property under threat. And if I send you away from Black Ridge, Elias treats it as theft.”

Liana stepped closer. The bond answered at once, traitorous and sure.

“Then stop choosing like a man cornered between two bad futures,” she said. “Start choosing like someone who intends to stand beside me in both.”

The words landed deeper than Soren’s politics.

Adrian cleared his throat. “There’s one more thing. Soren’s ‘gift’ names. One of them matches the missing second-gate guard’s cousin in the lower market.”

The hall seemed to tighten around that fact.

Not proof of the leak.

A thread.

I straightened, pain still singing in my hand. “Follow it. Quietly. And double the escort plan for Black Ridge. If the River Clan can smell opportunity, the hunters already can.”

Liana glanced toward the doors where Soren had exited.

“He looked at me like a door,” she said softly.

“I know,” I answered.

And for the first time since her awakening, the threat was not only that I wanted her.

It was that other men had begun to want the power attached to her

and were polite enough to call for an alliance.

LianaThe night before the second day to Black Ridge, sleep refused me.The dual wolves paced under my skin in opposite directions, one pushing toward open air and any fight that would end the waiting, the other locked on the man two rooms away as if distance itself were wrong. I sat on the edge of the bed and tried Seraphina’s breathing until the knock came. Not a command knock. Quieter.Kael stood in the doorway without his coat, shirt loosened, silver eyes darkened by the kind of exhaustion rank could not discipline away. The bond filled the silence first, thick and sore.“I can’t stay down the hall,” he said.“Then don’t.”He closed the door. For a second he only looked at me, like he was still searching for a version of this that would not cost him everything. Then he came to the bed, cupped my face, and kissed me hard enough that my mouth opened under his on a sound I didn’t mean to give him.“I keep telling myself I’ll stop,” he said against my lips. “Then I catch your scent in

KaelI wrote the second letter to Elias with a blade under every sentence. The first had bought time. This one had to carry blood on the border, a named daughter in enemy mouths, and enough truth to keep a father’s trust from rotting, without the one truth that would turn trust into war.Liana stood by the study window while I worked, arms folded, the dual pulse in her still unsettled after the training rupture. She had not forgiven me for locking Maya, no. For locking “her” mother’s promise into enemy hands and answering with silence.Different woman. Different debt. Same shape of failure.“You’re writing around it again,” she said.“I’m writing what keeps him from riding into a compromised court half-informed.”“You’re writing what keeps you from having to say you took his daughter to bed.”The pen stopped.Adrian’s knock saved nothing. He entered with a secure slate and a face stripped of humor.“Intercepted fragments from the southern route,” he said. “Not a full message. Enough.”

KaelBy nightfall both perimeters were live and the castle still felt open.Adrian spread the evidence across the war table in hard lines: the marked cloth from the training ground, a small stack of southern coin with a dissolved guild stamp, three track sets that entered the outer woods and died with no exit drag, and a snapped warding pin taken from the second gate hinge. Someone had known the rotation gap. Not brilliance. Access. The kind that came from watching Draven habits long enough to borrow them.Liana stood across from me with her arms folded, the morning’s failed merge still visible in the set of her shoulders. She had refused to be sent to her rooms. I let her stay. Hiding her now would only confirm to every wolf in the wing that she was contraband instead of a person under protection.“How many people pass the first line without a challenge?” she asked.“Too many,” Adrian said. He tapped the duty slate. “The kitchen runs before dawn. Healer staff with sealed marks. Messa

LianaDawn on the training ground was all frost and iron.Seraphina marked a wide circle in the dirt with white chalk and salt. Adrian held the perimeter with four guards facing outward. Kael stood inside the circle with me, coat off, sleeves rolled, the bond between us pulled so tight it felt like a wire under the skin.“Controlled edge only,” Seraphina said. “First wolf to the surface. Second wolf acknowledged, not summoned. If they start to braid, you break it.”I nodded. The first wolf came like breath in winter, clean, immediate, gold flooding my vision. Strength rolled through my arms and legs. My hearing sharpened until I caught the heartbeat of a guard thirty paces away.“Good,” Seraphina murmured. “Now sense the second. Do not call it.”I reached downward the way she had taught me.The second presence was not under the first. It was beside it, older, heavier, patient in a way that did not feel human. The moment my attention touched it, both forces moved at once. The circle ti

LianaSeraphina did not waste time on comfort. She had me stand in the center of the stone chamber beneath the east wing while she walked a slow circle, eyes bright with healer-sight, hands hovering just above my skin without touching. The air smelled of crushed herbs and cold iron. Kael remained by the door like a locked gate.“Again,” Seraphina said. “Call the second presence forward. Not the full shift. The edge of it.”I tried. The first wolf rose easily now, heat in the blood, gold pressing behind my eyes, strength filling my limbs. The second presence came differently. Older. Heavier. Like something waking under ice. My vision split for a breath, and the room tilted.Seraphina’s hand snapped up. “Hold. Don’t force the merge.”I dragged both forces back down until my knees steadied. Sweat cooled along my spine.“Well?” Kael’s voice was quiet.Seraphina looked at him, then at me. “It’s real. Dual signature, fully distinct. The second form isn’t a mutation or echo. It’s a second com
