~Skai
My heart hammered against my ribs as though it wanted to break through, my saliva sticky as glue. For a second, I was too stunned to react. Questions stuck in the middle of my throat, but I let them down, avoiding more suspicions. I felt like a failure again; it's been barely days since I got there, and I wouldn't let it pass me by. The questions ran through my mind instead, as I watched him walk over to his desk, hoping he'd bring a sack letter. He pulled out his chair; the tyres squeaked in the deafening silence of the office, obstructing my intrusive thoughts. He settled in the chair, leaning back, the rays from the window blinds almost illuminating his face. He leant in and spun the atlas map on his desk, then back into his chair. A ray of light straightened across his face. My gaze met the map of North America staring straight into my eyes. Reminding me of my childhood home, when I thought life was all smooth and rosy. Uncertain of the direction to look, my eyes scanned through the corners of the office stretched in front of me. The air became heavy with silence, and I just wanted him to say something – anything – even if it was a word. To stop the storm brewing inside of me. “I want you to work undercover in the LIAS group. They're up to something, and I trust my instincts.” He dropped the bomb, leaving me to deal with it. He leant back , his elbow resting on the armchair. I could bet I looked funny with the wig, the strange feeling catching up with me. It was beginning to itch and feel heavy. I took it off, folding it in my hand. “This is just a fraction of the challenges you'd face.” I shut that little voice in my head, adjusting my tie. It was as if heat radiated from the wall, burning my innocent skin. I braced up, struggling to find my voice. “Not trying to be rude, sir; there are many employees in this company. I suggest you allow me to work as a bodyguard for a while.” I groaned inwardly at the slight slur in the end of my sentence. “Our employees are very busy in their units, including the receptionist. We don't like our business partners seeing different faces. We don't switch employees easily. A bodyguard should act as a spy.” “Do you want to discard me, sir?” I questioned. “No, you'll be in contact with the company, Enzo. You're perfect for what we need to make this bust – smart, intelligent and very observant.” He stared into my eyes, digging deep into my soul. The weight that has been perching on my chest eases like a silent wave. I heaved a sigh of relief; maybe it's just a coincidence. I thought being disguised was my salvation, cheerfully unaware of the tensions and minute peace that come with it. I've lived multiple lives – as a random girl in a brothel, a mercenary and a bodyguard. Now, it's time to be an undercover. My stomach twisted. Tillard must pay for ruining me and my mother. Life was better, filled with love and laughter. He separated me from the only family I have left, and that was the last time we saw each other until her death – with tears in her eyes. Since then, I became a shell. "Everything you need to know is in this file. You'll be deep undercover with him and his organisation. You will be on official assignment. You have full clearance and power to do what's needed to find the truth about them.” He said as he pulled out a file from beneath the stack of books carefully arranged close to the edge of his table. "So, I'll need multiple assignments and…. " I said. “You'll be on work, residential and personal contact assignments. I just need you to do your job. Your qualities alone will get this job bagged and tagged. You have what it takes and what is needed for this to succeed.” He proceeded, cutting me off. He was really serious about it. I didn't want to think deeply into it. It was unexpected, but it meant a lot to me. Infiltrating the LIAS group is a two-factor authentication - providing information to the BER corp and exacting revenge on the LIAS group. . “Enzo”. The voice made me jerk out of my thoughts. Ever since I sighted Tillard, I've been in the haze of my own making. “Do you need time to think about this?” “I'd do anything for the development of this company,” I said matter-of-fact. Was I not supposed to think about what could push me to the dead end? In that case, determination was an understatement. My need for revenge simmers beneath the surface like an untamed animal. Taking risks had always been part of me. The door creaked open, and Mr Bernard entered. His quizzical gaze bounced between me and Juliano like a ping pong ball. “Are you really doing this?” he asked with a deep frown etched between his eyebrows. “It’s our first time proposing a partnership with the LIAS group. I can vouch they’re not professionals. We can’t put our profits at stake. You're too blinded by his fake lights to see his shadows.” Juliano’s voice clipped, screaming professionalism. “Enzo is meant to protect you," he said with a hint of concern in his voice. “We'll contact the agency for another bodyguard.” Juliano smiled, waving off his father's excuses. “The secretary reported that the company sent in an email for the finalisation of the contract, still bent on the full payment,” he said, settling in the cushion near the window blinds. "We haven't even had a proper board meeting yet.” He smiled as he stood, pushing the chair backwards and moving around the desk to stand in front of me. He picked up the file on his desk and handed it to me. “Excellent choice, Enzo. Don't let me down, and you have my words. You check in once a month; another medium for communication would be included.” He patted my shoulder. I nodded, clinging onto the file in my right hand. He moved over the cushion. “Other preparations would be done. You can leave, Enzo." I stepped out. A part of me was confused, another part was happy.~Skai Everything in my head was him, as if he had stolen my senses. I was obsessed, and I couldn't save myself. We stared at each other, like our souls were in deep conversations. I got into my room and glided underneath the sheets, and sleep drifted me away. I didn't know how long until I heard a knock on the door. “Come in,” I croaked, coughing. I reached for the glass of water on my nightstand. I gulped, almost selfishly. I calmed down, trying to focus on the itching in my throat. Juliano's face flashed into my head. I just smiled. “What would you like to eat, ma'am?” The maid said, bowing slightly. I looked out of the window. It was late afternoon. "Chicken soup should be fine.” I replied. “Hmm, Beatrice.” I called. She looked back. “I'm Celine, ma'am" I didn't know her name, but out of desperation. “Celine, did Margo set the dining?” “Not yet, Mr Juliano asked me to serve your food inside.” "Can I get painkillers too" "Alright." My cheeks flushed, but I tried to
~Juliano "You'll understand soon” I stood up and pressed a kiss on her forehead. Without saying a word, I turned on my heels and left the room. I didn't know how long I was there, until my phone buzzed. I could stay with her for hours without getting tired. I love watching her fall for my little gestures - the twitches in her eyes, the stolen glances. I need to claim her before anybody does. I walked through the hallway absentmindedly, resisting the urge to scare at my phone screen. The headline echoed in my head more than it should. Either reflex or instinct, something screamed at me not to check my phone until I entered my room. My fingers acted fast - too fast. I swiped up my phone screen, and it was just a message : Let's see who plays this game better. And that was it. No Caller ID. “What game?” I mulled over the word. But I could guess where it came from. The enemies. Our enemies. This time, I promised to be steps ahead. Not one. Not two. I couldn't trust anybody.
~Skai His soft laughter followed me out of the room. I rushed down the hallway, hands on my chest, my heart beating twice as fast as normal or even more. Like a Disney princess that just danced with her royal prince. I smiled to myself, widely, reminiscing about the moments. If it could be a dream I have every night, then I don't mind. I tried to make my expression blank because I knew Allysia would taunt me. She'd ask why I was smiling to myself and what we were doing. I had the answers all perfectly worded. When I entered, Allysia wasn't in my room, and her lights were off. She was asleep. I couldn't be happier. She'd make sure to dig more answers out of me. I slid underneath the sheets, the smile remained on my lips, unwavering until sleep drifted me away. ☆ The second day, Silence continued between me and Juliano. A kind of silence felt when you're about to light a dead candle, taking out the smoke and restoring the flame. We didn't talk about what happened last night. N
~Skai I suppressed the urge to look at his face. My attention fixed on the monitor. I didn't find any suspicious movements. But still, I'd not give up. Juliano sat on his bed, behind me. “We have other cameras in the mansion. The footage you're checking is just for certain areas.” He said carefully, as if he was selecting his words. “I can take you to the security room." He added. “Can we go there now? I need to check.” I glanced back, making sure my gaze landed on his eyes. He didn't reply. He stood up and walked towards me. He sat at the edge of the table. His shirtless image was presented in front of me. I swallowed. Is he doing this intentionally? My eyes lowered to the desk. If I stare too much, I don't know what might happen. “We would sort it out tomorrow,” he said, his tone casual. “Ummm,” I nodded, my fingers playing with the desk. There was nothing to check anymore. He lifted my chin; our gaze locked. “Look at me; I don't bite.” I stared at him; my
~Juliano His voice commanded every head in the room, and we all went silent as if the cat got our tongue. All eyes fixed on Juliano and the mystery behind his action. He didn't say any more words, but his jaw remained locked. The room froze for a beat. As if he wanted the silence to settle, he sat down. He looked awkward, like he wanted to say something but at the same time didn't feel the need to. His eyes scrolled past all faces. “What's wrong?” Allysia asked, her brows furrowed in confusion. Margo went over to her seat; after a few seconds, she smiled. Mr. Bernard's face twitched slightly, like he was enjoying the show. “What's making you upset, Juliano?” He asked, a tone of jest in his voice. Juliano shot him a look and his gaze returned to the food. It was strange, as if planned. I expected Juliano to smile after a while. He didn't. His face softened. I brushed it off with a tight smile and focused on the food. The atmosphere remained tense. Bruno pushed his chair
~Juliano I don't regret a thing. If I had to go through another hard time with Skai, I wouldn't think twice. She went through all those shits, and I wasn't available to help. The attack happened so fast. I didn't know who saved me. But I saw myself in my room - where I feel guarded. Guarded by the four corners and my mother's portrait. I recovered after the first dose of chemicals. I caught a view of Aver; I wasn't sure if it was truly her. Or my subconsciousness. Margo has a solution. I couldn't be happier. I didn't want to tread on the wrong route. “We have to be strategic about it,” Margo said. None of us laughed. She was serious. I just watched, with clear eyes. “I'll go… with two of my men.” Bruno raised a hand, his voice sharp and clear. I didn't doubt him, for unknown reasons. Since Skai trusts him, I do too. “Can you do it? I don't want Skai to return there.” Margo turned to him, a flicker of worry in her eyes. “I don't want to put her at risk too,” Bruno
