Sabrina’s Pov
The sound of the gunshot made me cover my ears and shut my eyes. Blood splashed on my face, the first time I tasted someone else's blood. I touched my blood-stained lips and wiped the blood off. The next thing I saw was my dad's brain splattered everywhere in our sitting room. "Dad!" My mouth was ajar, I kept screaming for as long as I could remember. "Be quiet, little girl," Rodrigo barked. He was the drug lord in Tijuana. Dad told me stories about him; he was the criminal my dad was so eager to catch, but Rodrigo was the death of my him. "Take her outside," Rodrigo ordered one of his gang. He had earlier taken my mum out the moment he entered the house, he let me watch him kill my dad, but drove my mum outside somewhere, I hope to find out as soon as I get outside. My shoulders slumped, my voice quivered as I sobbed loudly, and my cheeks were flushed as tears streamed down. "Shut it, kid." The mean man spanked the back of my head and pushed me forward. I tried to suppress my wail so as not to get spanked again, but I just couldn't help it. When we got outside, he walked toward one of the gang members standing by the car and whispered something to him. "Where is my mum?" I managed to utter amidst tears. "I want my mummy," I cried louder. The man was about to slap me, but the other man stopped him. "Your mum is in the car, now get in the car quietly else the boss will deal with you,” I kept quiet and entered the car as the man ushered me in. How could they even speak to a 10-year-old like she's an adult? He even tried to scare me by saying the boss would deal with me. As I entered the car, I saw her mouth gagged and her hands tied, I managed to remove the gag from her mouth. "Sabrina," she called breathlessly as I hugged her in tears. "Are you okay, baby? Did he hurt you?" "I'm fine but Dad….he…is," I managed to say and I stuttered saying the last three words, the scene played in my head again—Rodrigo shot Dad in his head as Dad begged him not to hurt me. "Shhhh! Mama is here." She tried to console me despite crying profusely; she had become a widow in her early 30s, and she didn't know what was ahead for her and her baby girl, me, Sabrina Sanchez. While I rested on Mum's shoulders until Rodrigo and his men came out. What were they doing inside with a dead man all this while? Were they clearing the evidence that'd link my dad's death to Rodrigo, or was there something he was looking for? He came out displeased, and one of his men asked loudly. "Did you find it, boss?" "No, I didn't. The bastard is shrewd even unto death, but his family will suffer it,” He stood outside the house, just in front of the three cars he had come with. Rodrigo was such a coward for bringing men in 3 cars to kill a man, his wife, and his 10-year-old daughter. The whole charade was not necessary, except that now I know that he's a man who loves to flaunt his wealth and power. He loved to be feared, and hell, I fear him. Rodrigo had a scar on his face that extended from his cheek to his jawline. He had a tattoo on his chest—It was a snake with its tongue out, its scales and curves were perfectly etched, and it looked so real. I saw it through his unbuttoned upper chest. "What do we do with the wife and kid?" "They're just collateral damage, they'd be my spoil,”He gave out an evil laugh, and his men followed suit. Rodrigo took us to his underground den, as his men dragged us in, my eyes flickered around the surroundings. We walked past some men packaging some powder, and we finally got to a dark room where the lady released my hand and pushed me inside. "In case, you are wondering where you are, you are in my den, you're my captives, you'd remain here until I say otherwise and you were blindfolded when coming here so that you'd perish the idea of running away, you are in the middle of nothing—no one can escape from Rodrigo, I'd track him and gun him down and his blood shall be in his head for obedience.” He lifted his two hands over his chest and took the posture of an alpha and Omega of Mexico, no one could challenge him or stop him. "As for this pretty face, I'm attracted to explore,” He said as he lifted my mum's face and caressed him. "You, son of a bitch!" she yelled and spat on his face, our hands were tied behind, I'm sure she'd have slapped him as well if she had her hands. "Woah! The detective's wife is feisty.” He smiled as he cleaned his face and turned to his men, and smirked. "You're such a coward for killing a weaponless man, taking your convoy of soldiers to kill just one man, were you that scared of my husband?" She began again with every anger within her. Her face was flushed from adequate sobbing, it was the first time I saw my mum being so courageous—we were in no position to confront Rodrigo, we were at his mercy. "My husband was a strong man, you'd never measure up.” Rodrigo got angry as she kept on talking and slapped her hard across the face. She fell to the ground. Her face was pale, and the was blood on her lips. "Mama!" I screamed as she fell from the weight of Rodrigo's slap. "Leave my mama alone," I screamed. "What a pretty little girl you have here, for her safety, you better keep your guts to yourself,"He bent down to squeeze my mum's face, he turned her face to me, where I stood like a scared rat after exhausting my tears. My mum nodded calmly, she couldn't risk losing me as well. "Lock them up, this is their new home," Rodrigo ordered as he walked out of the room. I watched the door close, leaving us in a dark room, sitting on the bare floor. "Who dares, Rodrigo?" He broke into boastful and mocking laughter as he stood right outside the room's door.Sabrina's Pov I scrambled back on the bed, my dress was still bunched around my thighs.Santiago stood there, gun lowered with his chest rising and falling fast. Blood splatter dotted his unbuttoned shirt. He looked at the two bodies in the doorway, then back at me, eyes dark and unreadable. “Sabrina, breathe, it is over, they’re down.”“Down?” I laughed, sharp and hysterical. “You just shot three men like it was nothing. How did you even…… where did that gun come from? Under my bed? Who the hell are you?”He moved fast but careful, stepping over the first body to check the hallway. “Clear,” he muttered, then pulled out his phone and dialed with one hand, “Yeah, it’s me. Two down at my current location. Send a crew now. No, don’t ask questions, just make it quiet and fast.” He hung up and turned to me. “Backup’s coming to clean this up.”I snatched the lamp off the nightstand, ripping the code from the wall, and held it like a bat. My hands shook but I didn’t lower it. “Backup? You h
Sabrina's PovMartinez didn’t ask me to sit. He just shut the door and leaned against his desk, arms crossed like the weight of the precinct was pressing down on his shoulders.“They got to him,” he said.My chest squeezed so tight I had to remind myself to breathe. “When?”“An hour ago, there was a shift change and just freaking five minutes of blind cameras.” His voice was low, tired. “Security footage? Wiped clean, like it never happened.”“No, that cell is locked down tighter than a vault.” I stepped closer, palms slapping the desk. “How the hell did they pull that off?”“That’s what’s eating me,” Martinez muttered. “Cause of death was strangulation or even any sign of struggle. He looked… resigned, like he saw it coming.”“Rodrigo,” I whispered.Martinez gave a single nod. “it had to be.”“Did anyone see anything useful?”“Nothing, one guard mentioned a power flicker.” Martinez’s eyes narrowed. “You didn’t answer your phone earlier.”“I was at the hospital.”Rage and fear crashed
Sabrina's Pov I left the precinct earlier than planned. I needed to see Tina again, even if she was still half asleep and barely speaking. I needed proof she was still here. My mind kept looping through everything the man had said.I tried focusing on the steps in front of me, on the sidewalk, on anything that didn’t feel like it was pressing down on my chest. But I was too caught up in my own thoughts, too busy trying to figure out what Rodrigo’s next move might be.Which is probably why I didn’t notice anyone walking toward me until it was too late.I bumped straight into a solid chest.“Oh, Sabrina,” a familiar voice said as a hand wrapped gently around my arm to steady me. “Be careful.”I looked up quickly. “Santiago?”He smiled a little, still holding onto me for a second before letting go. “You okay? You looked miles away.”“Yeah, I was just deep in thoughts,” I muttered, brushing my hair back. “Clearly,” he said with a soft laugh. “You almost knocked yourself out.”I rolled m
Sabrina’s PovMartinez walked me down the hallway in silence. When we reached the small interrogation room, he stopped and looked at me like he wasn’t sure if letting me in was a good idea.“I’m here now, let me talk to him.”He opened the door. The man sat cuffed to the table, bruised and staring straight at me the moment I walked in. He looked too relaxed for someone caught in the middle of an attempted murder case.“There she is,” he said, smiling like we were old friends.I pulled the chair out and sat. “Start talking.”“No warm greeting?” he teased. “You detectives are all the same.”“You asked for me, and here I am, so talk.”He tilted his head. “I heard your cousin pulled through. Tough girl.”My jaw clenched. “Don’t mention her.”He shrugged, almost amused. “You can’t handle hearing her name? That’s interesting.”Martinez stepped behind me, shoulders tense. “Cut the attitude and answer her.”The man leaned forward a little. “Rodrigo told me you’d show up just like this. Straig
Sabrina’s Pov I had stood outside in the freezing night, shifting my gaze from one passing vehicle to another. I know who I saw, I know it was Rodrigo. “Excuse me, miss?” I turned to look at the clueless nurse. “Miss Sabrina,” I refused to shift my focus from the road. “I was asked to get your signatures on this paper.” I signed it quickly. My heart ached so badly I was hallucinating, but if it was Rodrigo, then this is just the beginning. Tina laid in bed, she looked so calm but I could still see she was in pain. I stood near Tina’s bed, rubbing her stiff hands together. The machines beeped softly, reminding me she was still here. Barely, but here. “I’m so sorry, Tee,” I whispered softly as if she would wake up if I spoke too loudly and I knew she needed rest. “I should’ve protected you. I should’ve been there.” Her eyes were closed. She couldn’t hear me, but saying the words still burned my throat. I pulled the chair closer and sat, leaning forward with my elbows on t
Sabrina’s PovI couldn’t believe what I heard. I felt my entire world pause. While my phone was still pressed to my ear, I slowly turned to face Santiago . “My sister…” I whispered.“What about her?” He asked, with concern all over his face.My voice was trembling. “She’s been shot, I need to go to the hospital right now.” Santiago 's expression, which showed he was longing for something more, was now filled with alarm. He didn’t wait for me to say any more words before dressing up. We both sensed the urgency.“Which hospital was she taken to?” I asked over the phone, tring to keep my breath steady. I could feel my heart pounding so fast which made it hard for me to hear the reply. “H. Jude Hospital. She was brought here not long ago, and she’s unconscious due to the large amount of blood she has lost.” I didn’t want to hear all of that over the phone, so I hung up quickly.I turned, surprised to see Santiago fully dressed; his earlier desire was now replaced with concern. “I wil
Sabrina’s PovMartinez had dragged me out in the night to a club all in search of Rodrigo, the drug mafia. I know I said I'd do anything to get Rodrigo, but right now I just want to go back to my bed. My body still hurts from my encounter with Santiago .Martinez appeared in a stylish suit with an
Sabrina’s PovThe thing about working on a case is that you don't determine how your day will go; you can get intel at any time. I was heading home after a long day, before I suddenly jerked forward and fell off the bike as a car almost crashed into me from behind. I turned and saw a car stuck to t
