Chapter 1

Author: Against the Flow
I had just stepped into the hall where the law forum was held when I saw Francis Zouche standing on the stage, wearing a sharp suit and speaking charmingly. His every move was filled with confidence and pride.

I froze for a moment, feeling that it was kind of surreal to be seeing him again. It had already been eight years since we parted ways. If I had not seen him that day, I would have forgotten what he looked like.

After Francis was done with his speech about legal matters, he publicly proposed to Heidi Colman, who looked at him with eyes full of admiration from the audience.

The crowd applauded and cheered.

Heidi walked onto the stage, moved to tears. She repeated several times, "I do."

Francis smiled brightly and knelt down. He slid the engagement ring onto the finger of the woman he loved.

In my mind, I could not help but recall the scene when Francis had proposed to me. He had not knelt down like he did now. In fact, he just mentioned it casually. Even the engagement ring was just a ring pull from a beer can. It was uncaring and thoughtless.

But when faced with the one he truly loved, Francis spared no effort to make sure that she got the best proposal possible.

Amid the blessings of the crowd, the two happily embraced.

The people who had crowded around them started to talk excitedly. "Wow, they really are a perfect couple. I'm so jealous."

"Francis is the most promising lawyer in the legal world. He's the kind of man every woman dreams of marrying."

"Stop day dreaming. We stand no chance."

"Exactly, I heard he loves Heidi very much. He has already spent millions by buying her a villa and a luxury car already."

"Heidi's life is perfect now."

Suddenly, someone pointed in my direction and exclaimed, "Look! Isn't that Yvette Quilter? She was Francis' ex-girlfriend that he was once head over heels in love with?"

Upon hearing this, everyone turned their eyes toward me.

I noticed that Francis' smile froze when he heard my name, and his eyes darkened.

As the forum ended, the two of them walked straight toward me.

"Long time no see, Yvette," Heidi greeted me with a smile.

Her friends stared at me with disdain and started mocking me. "Why did you come here in a sweatsuit, Yvette? This is a law forum. You should at least dress formally!"

"How many years has it been? Are you still working in the countryside?" another friend said.

"Don't tell me you don't even have a job and came here today to get one?" A third person chimed in.

"I can tell you're not doing well just by looking at you," said a fourth.

I knew these people too. After all, Francis and I had attended the same law school. Just because I was dressed simply in casual clothes today, they thought my life was not going well.

I kept my expression neutral and ignored their remarks. Still, I felt uneasy because Francis was staring at me with a complicated look in his eyes.

"It's been so many years since I've last seen you, why are you still so sloppy? What happened to your career drive?" Francis sounded surprised.

I frowned at his words. I was dressed comfortably, yet in his eyes, I was sloppy. I had known that he was somewhat materialistic. However, I had not known he would be so narrow-minded that he would judge how someone was doing solely based on their clothes.

"Yeah, Yvette. You're dressed so plainly, and you're not even wearing makeup," Heidi chimed in.

She leaned against Francis' arm that was wrapped around her, looking at me as if she were showing off that he was hers.

She scrutinized me from head to toe and showed a disdainful expression. "You're already in your thirties. If you keep being so sloppy, no man would want to marry you."

As soon as she said that, the crowd burst into laughter. After all, Heidi was wearing a custom-made gown with expensive jewelry. She looked impeccably exquisite.

In contrast, I had just come from a business trip in a remote mountain area, so I had not slept well for days and looked exhausted. The brandless casual clothes that I was wearing couldn't hold a candle to her glamorous outfit.

I continued to ignore them and turned to walk away, making it clear that I was not interested in responding to them. Sometimes, ignoring someone was the most effective comeback.

However, Francis stopped me and handed me a bank card. "Everyone says you went to work in the countryside because you were heartbroken over me, and that was why your life turned out badly. I should be a little charitable here. This is for you. Take it."

I asked Stefan for his opinion on whether I should still handle Francis' case. He didn't mind at all and told me to follow my heart. I felt blessed to have a husband who understood me unconditionally. That day, I went to the prison to see Francis. When he saw me, he immediately became emotional and started singing the love song he used to sing often when we were together in our previous life. When I heard the familiar melody, I felt no emotion and only numbness. How could Francis still have the mood to sing in such a situation without any concern for his illness or crimes? Was it because he was going to die soon that he acted so recklessly?Unfortunately, he had lied to me almost all the time in our past life together. So, no matter what he said in this life, I wouldn't believe it. He had already died once, and if he died again, it wouldn't matter to me.I chose to help him only out of humanitarian duty as his defense attorney. Even if he had committed heinous crimes, he still de

A few days later, Francis came. He wore a hat, a mask, and an all-black outfit that was dirty and messy. He looked haggard and disheveled.Upon seeing him, I was stunned and unable to react for a moment. He sat in front of me with his head lowered."You'd better turn yourself in," I advised. The police had been looking for him recently, but he kept hiding from them. Now, he had come to me, and all I could do was persuade him to turn himself in.He looked up at me and gave a bitter smile. "I don't have the courage to do it. After thinking long and hard, I decided to come to you."I pursed my lips and hesitated before suggesting tentatively, "Why don't I help you turn yourself in?"Francis nodded with a bitter smile. So, I called the police and watched with my own eyes as he was taken away.As he left, he looked at me and asked seriously, "Yvette, you offered to help me with my case. That means you still have some feelings for me, right? I've learned my lesson. All this was becau

A few days later, news spread that Francis had lost a lawsuit. Moreover, he was exposed for taking bribes, bribing witnesses and judges, and helping clients fabricate evidence as a workaround against the law.He had been a top lawyer whose career was thriving, yet now he was exposed for falsification and quickly became the local news headline. When I learned of this, I was shocked. Once a rising star in the legal world, Francis instantly became a fraud despised by all and a criminal who had violated the law. Not only were his assets seized, but he was also taken away by the police, detained, and put under investigation. With such crimes on his record, his life was utterly ruined.According to sentencing guidelines, he would not be spared from being sentenced to decades in prison.I felt a pang of wistfulness. When people became too greedy, they would indeed lose their sanity."Are you feeling sad for him?" Stefan held my hand, looking at me unhappily.I shook my head. I felt am

After Stefan and I got our marriage certificate, we held a simple wedding. He loved me, spoiled me, and supported me unconditionally. When Francis heard this, the sorrow on his face deepened. "But didn't you say before that you were only willing to have children with me? How could you have children with someone else now?"His question made me lose my temper. In my past life, I wanted to have children with him. He was the one who destroyed those hopes.I said, "Ha! Are you out of your mind? Don't forget that I had wanted to give birth to your child in our past life. But what did you do? You dragged me to the hospital to kill our child with our own hands, so you have no right to say this!"Besides, things between us ended long ago. You have your life, and I have mine. We have nothing to do with each other anymore. Don't forget that you were the one who didn't want me. You regretted marrying me, and you chose your first love over me."Francis froze. Judging from his eyes, he was see

Once upon a time, I would have felt hurt by his actions. But our relationship had long ended. So, why cling to what was gone?I had a husband who deserved all my love, a considerate and understanding daughter, and a dream job. I had the happiness I could not have in my previous life. I was very content with my current life.Upon noticing Francis' gaze toward me growing increasingly pained and regretful, I reminded him with a stern expression, "Francis, I'm already married with a child. You should hurry and get a move on too."Francis said nothing but stared at me in silence, his eyes dark with emotion.Stefan's expression turned cold. He glared at Francis intently with an eerily dangerous look. The look everyone gave us changed as well. Their eyes were full of anticipation for even more drama."This looks more like unresolved feelings to me.""Indeed. Wow! Who would've thought that Yvette would marry the richest man in Alvren? Francis tried to brush her off with a bank card earl

I reached out and hugged my daughter, Ariel Yardley.Ariel, who had just been smiling brightly, started crying sadly as soon as she was in my arms. "Mommy, why did you come back so late? I missed you so much!"My heart ached as I wiped away her tears. I patted her back gently to comfort her. "It was because I was working. I had to finish my work first before coming back. Didn't I tell you that we must be responsible in everything we do? Have you forgotten that?"Upon hearing this, Ariel became even more upset.I quickly added, "But I took an annual leave. In a couple of days, I'll take you out to play, okay?"She immediately nodded and happily planted a kiss on my cheek. "You're the best, Mommy!"Everyone present looked at us with shock and disbelief. They all stood frozen for quite a while."Honey!" An excited cry from a man sounded near the entrance. What followed the voice was a tall and handsome man who rushed into the hall in large strides."I told you to let me know when
