Thirteen — I hate Carl Martinez

"This tastes so good, Whit. Where did you get them?" Ava breaks the silence in the room as she gushes about how delicious the cheese croissants I bought her are. She slurps loudly from her milkshake cup, the noise snapping me back to reality.

My focus zeroes in on Jayden, who's looking at me with a calm smile. A chill runs down my spine when I feel his touch.

My gaze lowers slowly to see his hand covering mine, his fingers rubbing the back of my hand soothingly.

I look back up at him, skepticis

My nerves shatter to pieces as I lock eyes with the man I hate with every fiber of my being, currently occupying my passenger seat.Carlos fucking Martinez. My nightmare and the last person I expected to run into today. My heart shrinks in my crippled chest as my gaze darts between his eyes in disbelief, silently hoping this is only a figment of my imagination and he's not actually the one in my car right now.But who am I kidding? His scent already lingers heavily in the air, ambushing my senses, and his larger-than-life body blocks my view, leaving me unable to see anything other than him. And that stupid smug grin currently etched across his full lips.My eyes stop flickering and my focus zeroes in on his glinting emerald orbs.I'm not hallucinating shit. It's really him.In my car.In my face.I remember having the feeling that someone was stalking me just a moment ago. I guess my instincts were right. It's this motherfucker. He's been lurking around like the doom he is, waiting t

  • IN BED WITH THE RUTHLESS HOCKEY CAPTAIN   Thirty-One: Encounter with the devil

It really doesn't get more complicated than this. What on earth could possibly be the real reason Carl went after Jayden?Only Carl knows, but the motherfucker wouldn't tell me anything.Pausing in deep silence for a minute, I ponder my thoughts, trying to come up with a new theory. But nothing at all comes to mind. I can't seem to connect any link to what might have happened between those two. And why this is so difficult for me is because I know Jayden was never associated with Carl in any way.So imagine my surprise when Devin suddenly tells me,"I'm not sure about this, but I also heard, Whitney, that your friend was once a member of their club?"I stiffen, then huff out a derisive scoff at the idea. "As if," I ask grimly, "What club?""They have a secret club," he repeats firmly. "I heard Jayden was once a member...."I shake my head, refuting it. "That's not true.""It's not impossible, either," he tells me warily. "Don't dismiss every suspicion just because he's your friend. Th

  • IN BED WITH THE RUTHLESS HOCKEY CAPTAIN   Thirty: It's not about her

By the time I arrive at L.K's Cafe, my secret agent is already waiting at one of the tables. I'm not even surprised by his punctuality, even after I abruptly readjusted the time for our meeting. He always keeps to time — the last time he was late was actually the first time.Devin raises his hand among the crowd the moment I step into the busy cafe. Relief washes over me when I spot him. I wave back before sauntering to where he's seated, carefully dodging the prying eyes of some onlookers. Two cups of coffee sit on his side of the table with a half-eaten sandwich wrapped in foil.My gaze returning to him, I take my seat and shrug off my coat, placing it on my lap."Care for coffee?" Devin asks courteously. "You look dehydrated, love."I roll my eyes at his teasing remark. "Fine, get me a cup then."He nods briskly, rising to his feet. "Be right back, my lady."I chuckle softly as he disappears into the crowd, heading toward the counter to get me a cup of coffee. While I wait for him,

  • IN BED WITH THE RUTHLESS HOCKEY CAPTAIN   Twenty Nine: Laura

"What do you mean?" Ava shifts uneasily in her chair, barely maintaining eye contact."I asked why you suddenly left when Laura showed up? You could have stayed with them back at the hospital."She scoffs like my suggestion is completely ridiculous. "Have you seen those two together before, Whitney?" she retorts, and I shake my head."No."Hell, I didn't even know Jayden and Laura were friends until that day Laura and Pen approached me in class."You should see them..." Ava trails off, bringing me back to the conversation. "You'd leave if you were me.""What were they like together?""Like inseparable lovebirds," she says, and I notice that same bitterness in her voice. "She was just all over him like Jay was the love of her life. I had to leave — to give them the privacy they clearly needed," she clears her throat awkwardly."And how did that make you feel?" I ask, trying to get at something. I've noticed she doesn't seem pleased talking about Jay's affair with another woman, which i

  • IN BED WITH THE RUTHLESS HOCKEY CAPTAIN   Twenty eight: starting over

Two days ago, I meant it when I said I was starting over. For someone who's been so hellbent on getting revenge from the start, I think I'm doing pretty well at letting go so easily. Or that's what I like to believe.I've been so obsessed with finding justice for my friend to the extent that I forgot I have other important things to do with my life and time.I haven't been studying, and I have Mrs. Jill's test coming up in roughly two days. I haven't been hosting nor attending group studies with my coursemates either because I've been so occupied lately. However, it's time to put an end to all that unseriousness. It's high time I remind myself of the reason I'm in college and focus strictly on maintaining my grades.I couldn't give two fucks about what Jayden wants now — that's his problem to deal with. I'm not sure if Ava later told him what I shared with her, but since there has been no new action taken to proceed with the police investigation, I'm guessing it's one of two things. E
