Chapter 3-She Is All Yours
I looked over my phone to check the map. I am not sure if I got off at the right stop, but the map says here that the Vermont Corporation building is a few blocks away. And I was already late, given that my father already texted me, looking for me in the building’s lobby. But it was not like I could have asked the bus driver to speed up. Checking the map once again, I figured that it was only three blocks away. The good thing was that I was not wearing a very high heeled shoe, just a pair of decent two inches heels. I started to walk then and constantly checked my phone to make sure that I was going the right way.
In bold and cursive display, the words “Vermont Co.” graced the front of the building. I exhaled my exhaustion and waited for the pedestrian sign to turn green and the cars to stop. Several passersby stood beside me as they too waited to cross. This is my first time coming here to Vermont Co., and the only thing that I know about them is that they own one of the largest and most luxurious hotels in the country. They also own other businesses in different fields and are big investors, but I am only familiar with the hotels.
I stepped in the revolving door and marveled at the interior of the lobby and the friendly faces at reception greeted me. But as I roamed my eyes around the area, I found my father’s face, frowned upon me and so I quickly walked towards him.
“Where have you been?!”
“The bus was late, Dad,” I answered calmly, I knew that there was no point arguing with him. And besides, it was never in me to argue with anyone.
“Follow me,” he uttered, and beside him was his lawyer with a briefcase in his hand.
I followed them without any idea what was going on or where we were headed to.
“Where are we exactly doing here, Dad? Shouldn’t you have brought someone from the finance department since they are the ones dealing with investors?” I asked but I received no response from him and the lawyer just glanced at me. We entered the elevator and I stood behind my father, two more employees of the company stepped in before the doors closed. The lawyer pushed the buttons that would lead us to the eleventh floor of the building, the employees pushed the fifteen. The elevator stopped a few times for other people to get in and out.
The elevator made a sound and I looked up seeing the number 11 on top of the door as it opened and we stepped out. We walked along the hallways, passing by several offices, with solid and transparent walls, and saw several computers and cubicles where the employees worked, until we stopped. The door holds the words “General Manager”. The lawyer knocked on the door and a man opened it.
Dad stepped in, then I followed when our lawyer gave me the way before he followed, closing the door behind him. As I moved forward, I froze when my eyes left my father’s back and looked around the room, landing my gaze at a man seated on his swivel chair, standing up to meet my father with a handshake.
I know him.
My heart hammered against my rib cage, and my eyes did not leave his angelic face.
A fallen angel if I must say. His rough features and cold hazel brown eyes that I have only noticed today, for I was drunk when we did it, and he was asleep when I woke and left him.
I could not hear what he and my father were talking about along with our lawyer. My hearing was muffled and I was too engrossed at seeing him again, which I never thought would ever happen.
It was just a one night stand.
We were both drunk.
And we did not know each other.
So he works here?
It wouldn’t be too rude to know the name of the person who took my V-card, right?
My eyes glanced at his table and looked at his desk nameplate. “Alexander Vermont”
“Vermont?”
“Show your manners, Claire.” I heard my father's voice which put me out of trance.
“H-huh?”
I did not know I had said it out loud.
“I apologize,” I uttered and looked at him, Alexander Vermont, who now has his eyes on me.
“She is the one you were talking about? Your daughter,” he uttered.
“Yes. She is all yours. You may do whatever you want with her. She is adept with administrative work since she worked in my company, and can be your personal maid, assistant, or wherever you need her,” Dad said and I was in utter shock.
“Dad, w-what are you talking about? What is this?” my hands were trembling and I could not stop my voice from rising a little.
But he did not answer me.
I walked abruptly towards him, my heels clicking against the tiled floor, I grabbed the sleeve of his coat and he met my eyes with a stern look.
“You wanted to help the company, right? Now be useful and serve him well,” he uttered with a look of a warning.
“What? No!”
“It seems that your daughter was not aware and protests against this deal, Mr. Hugh. I would not want to have a headache.” Alexander Vermont uttered, and I glared at him.
“You will now work for him, and do everything he says. Our company is going bankrupt and we owe him big time. Show some care to my family and be useful in our life even just once.” Dad said and turned to Alexander Vermont.
“She will do everything you say, she is all yours. Here is the copy of the agreement that we have sent you and to your lawyer. You just have to sign this now to certify that we are free from all financial debts.”
I tried to grab the folder from my dad but his reflexes were faster to grab my wrist, give me a warning look while he strongly held my hand, and I twisted in pain that tears started to pool in my eyes and I struggled to break free from his hold. I tried pulling my hand away from him but he held it firmly.
“Dad, you are hurting me.” I voiced meekly. This was not the first time he had hurt me physically, he had done it as well before when he slapped me for I was accused by my stepmother and stepsister of something I had never done.
“You will really get hurt if you do not stop disobeying me.” He uttered with greeted teeth, and I could feel his anger seeping out of him despite his control not to lash out at me in front of other people.
Chapter 81: The ProposalClaire's hands trembled as she fought to shut the door. Her voice was low and angry, almost a hiss, "Leave, Alex. Leave. I don’t want you here." But no matter how hard she pushed, Alex's grip on the door was stronger. He wasn't letting go this time. She glared at him, her heart pounding in her chest, but the truth was, his sudden presence after all these months had unraveled her. She was pregnant, alone, and already emotionally exhausted. Seeing Alex, of all people, standing in front of her only intensified everything she had bottled up inside. Her emotions clashed violently. The man she loved — the man who had hurt her — was standing just inches away.“I’m not leaving,” Alex said firmly, his voice filled with a quiet desperation. “Claire, please… just let me talk to you.”Tears pricked at the corners of Claire’s eyes as she struggled with her emotions. She wanted to hate him, to push him away and protect herself from any more pain. But as she stood there, fac
Chapter 80: Leave, AlexTanya’s sharp voice cut through the phone after the nonstop calls from Alex. "What do you want, Alex?" Now that he learned about Claire’s pregnancy, he couldn’t calm down, and the search for her was too slow and it was making him restless, he could not just sit down and wait. There was an easier way, and that was through Tanya, so he reached out to her multiple times.Alex took a deep breath, steadying his nerves. "I need to know where Claire is." Silence. Tanya refused to reply. She promised Claire that she would not tell a soul where she was."I know she's pregnant, Tanya," Alex continued, his voice betraying a hint of desperation. "I need to find her. I need to be with her."Tanya’s sigh crackled through the phone. “Pregnant or not, you’ve lost the right to know where she is. You made your choices, Alex. Now, Claire’s making hers.”Alex closed his eyes, pushing back the frustration. “I understand how it looks. I made mistakes — I was so focused on the compa
Chapter 79: His Child“We’ve found something,” Jones’s voice said, pulling Alex from his haze.“What is it?” Alex asked, straightening up in his chair, suddenly alert.“We tracked down Tanya’s relatives in the Philippines. Took a while, but we’ve confirmed a connection. She’s got a cousin there, and from what we can tell, Claire could be staying with them.”Alex felt a rush of adrenaline, a flicker of hope he hadn’t felt in weeks. Finally, there was something concrete.“Do we know where they live?” he asked, his tone sharp, all business now.“Not yet, but we’re working on it. We’ll need to send someone over, a private investigator. We’ve already got people on the ground following up leads, but it’s delicate. We’ll need time.”“How much time?”“Could take a couple of weeks, maybe more. We’re doing everything we can.”Weeks. The word echoed in Alex’s mind. Claire could be slipping further away every moment that passed, but there was no other option. He had to be patient. Something he ha
Chapter 78: MiserableThe following days passed in a blur of frustration, alcohol, and regret. Alex could not shake the feeling of loss, the gnawing emptiness that had settled in his chest since Claire disappeared. He had always prided himself on being in control, on having everything within his grasp, of everything going his way. But now, everything felt like it was slipping through his fingers like he was not in control of things anymore. Claire had become an unforeseen factor that was driving his life into ruin. His apartment, once filled with the quiet presence of Claire, felt cold and empty. It was not just the absence of her physical presence — it was the absence of the warmth and life she had brought into his space. Without her, the apartment felt like a hollow shell, a reflection of the growing void inside him. Before, he never minded, he never noticed, for he never let anyone in ever again after Aubrey Chen, but somehow, Claire made everything different. The once cold and ho
Chapter 77: Can't Hide ForeverThe phone rang again, its shrill tone slicing through the suffocating silence of Alex’s office. He was slouched in his chair, a half empty glass of whiskey resting on the edge of his desk. The burn of alcohol did little to numb the persistent ache gnawing at him ever since Claire disappeared. For a few seconds, he stared at the phone, considering letting it ring, as if ignoring the call could somehow silence the storm raging inside him.But something about the persistent ringing was tugging him from his haze. With a frustrated sigh, he reached for the phone.“Yes?” he answered when he recognized the caller, his voice rough and groggy from drinking all day.“Sir, it is Jones,” came the steady, familiar voice of his security head. “We have finally tracked down Claire’s last known whereabouts.”Alex straightened in his chair, his heartbeat quickening. “Go on,” he urged, gripping the phone tightly.“She boarded a flight to the Philippines. We confirmed it th
Chapter 76: Fight for HerAlex pulled out his phone, staring at Tanya's contact. She had always been close to Claire, her best friend. If anyone knew where Claire had gone, it would be her. With a deep breath, Alex tapped her name and waited for the line to connect. The dial tone rang once, twice, then a click as Tanya picked up."Hello? " Tanya's voice came through, cautious.Alex cleared his throat. “Tanya, it is Alex.”There was a pause on the other end. "What do you want, Alex?"“I need to talk to you. About Claire.” His voice was firm but not demanding. He did not want to escalate things, but he needed answers. “I need to know where she is.”Tanya scoffed, the sound sharp and unforgiving. “You need to know where she is? Are you serious? After everything, Alex? After all those photos of you and Aubrey?”“It is not what you think,” he started, but Tanya cut him off.“Oh, it is exactly what I think. Do you think I did not see the articles? The photos? Claire saw them too, Alex. She
